One bright side of being made of elements is apparently not feeling the heat, which is something I was very grateful for on that trip.
It's been a few days, and we got lucky with nothing bad happening, but obviously that wasn't gonna last.
Just as I thought of that, I looked up as I saw shadows on the ground, and saw three eagles flying in circles around us.
"They're probably waiting for us to drop de— "
I didn't even get to finish as they started flying towards us, showing they were way bigger than I thought. "Or not. GET DOWN!"
The people panicked but still did what I told them.
The eagles were as big as a person.
I changed to my rock element and started shooting rocks at the eagles.
Two of them were hit and they backed off, but the third one managed to dodge and fly down fast enough to pick up one of the refugees.
It started flying off but I wouldn't let that happen.
On instinct, I changed to my new fire element and shot a fire ball on it.
It managed to strike it, but the fire ball was too weak to kill it.
Most likely because that was the first time I used one.
Thankfully, it didn't need to.
The ball still hurt the eagle enough to drop the refugee and cause a lot of feathers to be burned.
That thing started trying to fly away, and while it still managed to stay in the air, it was barely and it obviously was gonna drop sooner or later. It flew away with the other two following it.
Maybe they were planning to eat it when it dropped, but that wasn't my problem at the moment. "Are you alright?" I asked the refugee - who was a guy - as the others surrounded us.
"I-It just stabbed my shoulders, great Zack," That's probably where it held him.
Those things have sharp talons.
"Here," I changed to my water element and let water gently float to the wounds to clean them. "Alright, let's get that patched up. Does anyone have any cloth?" I asked.
After making sure the guy was in a better state, I looked around. "Okay, from here on, things are probably gonna be more dangerous. So, everyone,
stay close to each other, be careful, and most importantly, watch out for each other, because I have no plans to leave anyone behind."
There was confirmation around either with nods or 'yes, great Zack', and while I hate that name, I was still trying to comprehend how things could have gone to shit just like that.
(I need to be more careful, too,) I thought to myself as we went back to walking.
My worries back then were so simple. Leading people through a dessert is honestly far simpler than dealing with the world's Conscious' issues.
Two weeks. We have been travelling for two straight weeks.
I had to refill their water many times.
Thankfully, we started seeing Uruk in the distance.
Sadly, we ran into trouble occasionally. "Goddammit," I groaned as I held back a giant worm.
That thing had many teeth and it was trying to eat the people behind me while I held it in my rock element.
Changing to my wood element, I grew spikes out of my hands and stabbed it several times inside the mouth, causing it to scream in pain before backing off and running away, most likely believing we were not a worthy prey.
I sighed as I watched it go away and looked back at the large city in the distance.
It had massive walls surrounding it so we couldn't exactly see the inside. "Just one more day," I sighed to myself.
If I had to describe that trip. It would be "annoying"
Would I say it was more trouble that it was worth? Honestly... not really.
The sun was rising on a new day.
We began travelling earlier than usual today to finally reach the city.
We were close enough to make out the details of the walls.
While we couldn't see the inside of the city, that still didn't stop the walls from being admirable.
The sheer size alone was something that drew the attention.
While I was admiring that, I saw something shining from above the walls.
I looked closely trying to see what it was, and when I realised what it was, I immediately jumped back while spreading my arms, making them longer - I was in my wood element - to pull the first row of people back with me.
Just as I did that, several golden swords shot down and fell in front of us, exactly where we standing just aminute ago.
"Hmm. A walking tree guiding a group of mongrels to my kingdom. Now that is truly amusing."
I looked up and my hopes for peace were easily crushed at the sight of Gilgamesh from the Nasuverse... and he was a teenager.
