Chapter 5 - What is your Purpose?

As Daniel led Captain Valen and his men through the dense forest, the atmosphere shifted. The tension from their initial encounter with the Pokémon had somewhat subsided, though unease still clung to the soldiers like mist. The forest seemed to come alive around them, the trees swaying gently, their thick branches intertwined overhead, creating a natural canopy that filtered the sunlight into dappled beams. Strange calls and movements rustled through the underbrush. Occasionally a creature would show itself.

Some of them seemed somewhat familiar to him, a giant green caterpillar, a purple rat the size of his forearm. But others... he couldn't even begin to understand them, a giant berry with a face, or one that seemed to be a group of cracked eggs jumping about?? This was too much all at once, and looking back at his men, it seemed they weren't doing any better.

Daniel, walking ahead with an air of calm authority, glanced back occasionally, as if to check on his guests. "You have nothing to fear," he said, his voice cutting through the silence. "The Pokémon here are more curious than dangerous. As long as you follow me and my rules, they will not harm you."

Valen gave a curt nod, still trying to wrap his mind around what they had seen. He had faced countless dangers in his career—bandits, beasts, and even the occasional rebellion—but this… this was beyond anything he had ever imagined. These creatures—Pokémon, as Daniel called them—seemed to defy the natural order of the world. And yet, there was something about them that fascinated him. He had seen power, yes, but also intelligence. And that was perhaps the most unsettling part.

"Tell me more about these Pokémon," Valen said after a moment, his curiosity getting the better of him. "Where do they come from? Why have we never seen them before?"

Daniel smiled faintly, as if expecting the question. "They come from another world, one far removed from yours. In their world, they coexist with humans, not unlike how your people live alongside the animals of this land. But they are much more than mere beasts. Each Pokémon has its own unique abilities, its own strengths and weaknesses. Some can control the elements—fire, water, lightning. Others have powers that defy even the laws of nature itself."

Valen's brow furrowed as he listened. "And you… you control them?"

"I don't control them," Daniel corrected gently. "I guide them. I protect them. In their world, they have something akin to a god—Arceus, the creator of all Pokémon. I may have power but I only use it to serve as their caretaker in this world, and to protect them. I care for them, yes, but they have free will. They choose to follow me because they trust me, not because I command them."

Valen mulled over this explanation. The concept of a god-like being creating and guiding these creatures was foreign to him, but he couldn't deny what he had seen with his own eyes. "And why are they here? What is their purpose?"

Daniel seemed to mull over the Captains words for a moment before answering with a question himself, "Captain, what is your purpose?" Taken aback by the question, Valos was confused. 'My purpose? To do my duty? No, that's more of a responsibility. One's purpose is more than that. Heck, does anyone know their purpose?'

"Ugh, whatever." Daniel let out a light chuckle at the Captains frustrated response. Before anyone else could say anything, a loud crashing sound came from not far within the forest.

The Captain and his men, as if on instinct, formed a defensive formation, all eyes on the direction of the noise.

"Don't soil yourselves, it's probably just some troublemakers having fun." Daniel spoke, looking at them as if he was amused.

Deciding to indulge his guests in a little show, Daniel led them straight to the noise.

Stepping into a small clearing, they were surprised by what they saw. They expected a giant creature like the black dragon they saw earlier or something of similar proportions, but instead they saw two smaller Pokémon.

One resembled a toddler wearing a full body animal skin with a red lightning bolt across it, while the other looked like a large species of snake that they'd never seen before. Both of the creatures were similar in size and staring at each other with clearly malicious intent.

"Ah that explains it," Daniel spoke up, "The Pokémon resembling a snake is called a Seviper while the other one is known as a Zangoose. Both species hardly ever get along and often fight over territorial disputes or the like."

"You're not going to stop them?" One of the soldiers asked. "No, I tend to let them figure it our themselves, battles like these are commonplace for Pokémon and help them get stronger and some may even evolve. I may step in if I need to heal them, if absolutely needed, but Pokémon are more enduring than you think so that's hardly the case."

"What do you mean evolve?" The second in command asked. "All in due time. Now watch closely." Daniel said as he maintained his gaze on the two Pokémon, the soldiers all following suit.

The air was thick with tension as two mortal enemies stood face to face. Zangoose's sharp claws gleamed in the light, its fur bristling with aggression, eyes locked on its opponent. Across the clearing, Seviper coiled, its sleek, dark body rippling as it let out a low, menacing hiss. Its fangs glistened with venom, ready to strike.

Without warning, Zangoose charged, its powerful legs kicking up dirt as it rushed forward, claws raised for a *Fury Cutter* attack. Seviper's eyes flashed, and in an instant, it whipped its long body around, countering with a sharp *Poison Tail*. Zangoose barely dodged, leaping back just in time, but the tip of Seviper's tail grazed its arm, leaving a thin trail of venom.

Zangoose growled, shaking off the sting, and retaliated with a *Quick Attack*. It shot forward like a blur, slamming into Seviper's side with immense force. Seviper hissed in pain but didn't falter. It countered by raising its head high and unleashing a *Glare*, its eyes glowing eerily. Zangoose froze in place, muscles locking up as the paralysis took hold.

Taking advantage, Seviper reared back and unleashed a deadly *Poison Fang*, sinking its teeth into Zangoose's shoulder. The mongoose Pokémon let out a cry of pain, venom coursing through its veins. But the fiery warrior within it refused to back down. With sheer willpower, Zangoose broke free from the paralysis, its body trembling with adrenaline.

With a snarl, Zangoose slashed upward with *Slash*, its claws raking across Seviper's side. Blood splattered across the clearing as Seviper screeched in pain, thrashing wildly. Zangoose followed up with a fierce *Close Combat*, pummeling Seviper with a flurry of blows, each strike hitting its mark.

Seviper, desperate, retaliated with a vicious *Wrap*, coiling around Zangoose's body and squeezing tightly. Zangoose struggled, its breath coming in short gasps, but its claws were still free. With a final, desperate push, it used *Crush Claw*, driving its claws deep into Seviper's scales.

With a sharp cry, Seviper released its grip, uncoiling rapidly and slithering back. Both Pokémon were battered and bruised, breathing heavily, eyes filled with fury and exhaustion. For a moment, they stood still, glaring at each other, before Seviper slithered away into the shadows of the forest, hissing one last warning.

Zangoose watched as its ancient enemy disappeared, panting heavily, but triumphant. It stood tall in the clearing, the victor of yet another fierce battle, its fur still bristling, and its eyes scanning the woods for any sign of a future fight.

The clearing fell silent once more, but the air still crackled with the tension of the ancient rivalry that had just played out.
