Chapter 35 - "Why can't I be normal?"

The hospital room was dimly lit, the soft beeping of machines providing a steady backdrop to the conversation between Alex and Emma. The tension in the room was palpable as they sat together, Emma on the edge of the bed, and Alex in a nearby chair, his expression a mix of worry and resolve.

Emma stared at the ceiling, the weight of the decision he had to make pressing heavily on his shoulders. He had hoped to avoid this conversation, to delay the inevitable, but now it was time to face it. The thought of surgery was daunting, and the stakes were higher than ever.

Alex took a deep breath before speaking, his voice gentle but firm.

"Emma, I know this is a lot to take in. I want you to know that whatever decision you make, we'll support you… But… I think it's important we talk this through." Emma glanced up, his eyes filled with a mix of fear and uncertainty.

"I don't know if I can do this, Dad… The surgery sounds… terrifying." Alex nodded, his expression softening.

"I understand. It's a big decision and it's okay to be scared. But we need to think about what's best for you in the long run. The doctor explained that the surgery is risky, but without it, your condition will only get worse. It's not just about the immediate pain—it's about your future." Emma's voice trembled slightly.

"What if something goes wrong? What if I end up worse off?" Alex reached out and took Emma's hand, squeezing it gently.

"There are risks, that's true. But there are also risks if we don't do anything. The surgery might be difficult, but it's a chance to improve your condition and give you a better quality of life… We've faced challenges before, and we've always come through stronger. This will be no different." Emma looked at his father, seeing the determination and love in his eyes. It was clear that Alex wasn't just offering empty reassurances—he genuinely believed in the necessity of the surgery and in their ability to handle whatever came next.

"But what if I'm not strong enough?" Emma asked quietly, his voice filled with vulnerability. Alex's eyes softened even more, and he leaned forward, his voice filled with conviction.

"Emma, you've already shown so much strength… You've been dealing with this condition with so much courage... And you don't have to face this alone… Sarah and I will be with you every step of the way. We'll be there through the surgery, through the recovery, and beyond. We're a team, and we'll get through this together." Emma felt a tear slip down his cheek. The idea of facing such a significant surgery was overwhelming, but Alex's words offered a glimmer of hope. The thought of his parents by his side gave him a sense of reassurance.

"I just don't want this to define my life," Emma admitted, his voice breaking. "I want to be normal." Alex reached out and gently wiped away Emma's tears.

"You are normal, Emma. This is just one part of who you are. It doesn't change how amazing and strong you are. The surgery is a step towards making things better, towards giving you more freedom and a chance to live your life to the fullest." Emma took a deep breath, trying to steady himself. The fear and uncertainty were still there, but Alex's unwavering support made the decision a little clearer.

"Okay," he said softly.

"I'll do it. I'll go through with the surgery." Alex's face lit up with a mixture of relief and pride. He stood up and wrapped Emma in a warm embrace.

"I'm proud of you, Emma… We'll face this together, every step of the way. And no matter what happens, we're right here with you." As they pulled apart, Emma felt a small sense of peace amidst the storm of emotions. The decision to undergo the surgery wasn't easy, but with Alex and Sarah by his side, he felt a renewed sense of hope. The road ahead would be challenging, but he wasn't alone in facing it.

The hospital room was dark and quiet, the only sounds being the steady beep of the heart monitor and the occasional distant murmur of hospital staff in the hallway. Emma lay in the bed, the thin hospital sheets barely covering him, feeling strangely cold despite the warmth of the room. The night had a way of magnifying his fears, making everything seem more daunting and uncertain.

"How… Did I get here?" Emma stared at the ceiling, his mind racing with worries. The room was sterile and uninviting, every beep of the monitor was a constant reminder of his condition. The previous conversation with Alex had been comforting, but now, alone with his thoughts, the fear of the unknown loomed larger than ever.

"Am I really prepared for this?" He shifted slightly in bed, trying to find a comfortable position, but the discomfort in his chest made it difficult. He placed a hand over his heart, feeling the rhythmic beat beneath his fingers, each pulse a reminder of the pain and uncertainty that had been a constant companion in his life.

Emma started talking to himself in the dim light of the room, his voice barely above a whisper.

"Okay, Emma, just breathe. It's going to be alright. You've been through worse, right?" He tried to convince himself, but the words felt hollow, lacking the usual strength he needed.

His thoughts were a chaotic jumble as he replayed the day's events in his mind.

"The surgery… what if something goes wrong? What if I don't wake up?" He swallowed hard, feeling a lump in his throat.

"I don't want to leave Dad alone. I don't want them to worry. I don't want them to be sad." He let out a shaky breath, trying to calm his racing thoughts.

"This isn't fair. I should be thinking about school, friends… a normal life. But instead, I'm here, dealing with all this stuff I didn't ask for. Why can't I just be like everyone else?" Emma's hands trembled slightly as he squeezed them into fists, trying to ground himself.

"Why does this have to be my life? Why can't I just be normal?" His voice cracked as he spoke, the weight of his frustration and fear pressing down on him. He paused, taking a deep breath, and tried to refocus.

"Okay, Emma. You've got this. Remember what Dad said—everyone's here for you. You're not alone. You can do this." He tried to picture himself getting through the surgery, imagining a future where he could move past this.

"What if it works? What if you're okay? You have to believe it's going to be alright. You have to." He repeated the words like a mantra, hoping that by convincing himself, he could muster the courage he needed.

"Even if it's hard," he whispered to himself,

"You've got to be strong. For Dad, for Sarah, for yourself." Emma clenched his jaw, trying to hold back tears.

"This is just one part of your story, not the whole thing. You'll get through this. You have to." As he lay there in the darkness, the fear was still present, but it was now accompanied by a small glimmer of hope. The path ahead was uncertain, but with his family's support and the strength he was trying to summon, he felt a bit less alone in his struggles.
