Chapter 26 - Return

The soft hum of the heater filled the quiet January afternoon. Snow still clung to the corners of the windowsills, though most of it had melted in the unseasonably warm weather. Alex sat at the kitchen table, nursing a cup of coffee, while Emma was curled up on the couch, engrossed in a book. It had been a peaceful few weeks since Christmas, the normalcy of their routine slowly returning.

Just as Alex reached for his newspaper, a knock came at the door. It was unexpected, startling him from the comfort of the moment. Emma didn't look up from his book, too absorbed to notice. Alex stood, stretching his still-sore leg, and limped to the door. When he opened it, the last person he expected to see was standing there.

"Julia?" There she was—A woman Alex used to be good friends within High School who had trouble with her boyfriend just before graduation. Her face now pale and lined with regret, though still strikingly familiar. Her hair was shorter, her eyes just as intense, though softer somehow. She held a nervous smile, one that didn't quite reach her eyes.

"Hello, Alex," she said, her voice hesitant, as if she wasn't sure she had the right to be there. Alex's heart pounded in his chest, and he tightened his grip on the door. It had been years since he'd last seen her. His first instinct was to shut the door in her face because he didn't want trouble for Emma right now. But something about the way she stood there—unsure, almost pleading—made him hesitate.

"What are you doing here?" Alex asked, his voice tight. He glanced over his shoulder, making sure Emma was still in the living room, out of earshot.

Julia shifted, her hands wringing together nervously.

"I... I came to see Emma… I want to see my son." The words hit Alex like a punch to the gut. His son. Emma had been Alex's entire world since the day he was found on Alex's front patio, and Julia was his mom? Now, after everything, after the accident, after the healing, she wanted back in.

"You gave up that right when you left him on my doorstep… I had nothing to do about the fight between you and your old boyfriend" Alex said, his voice low and firm.

"Emma doesn't even know you. We're just getting back to normal, and now you want to show up out of nowhere?" Julia groaned.

"I know," she said quickly, her eyes brimming with unshed tears.

"I know I made mistakes, Alex. I know I left Emma when I shouldn't have, but I've changed. I've been working on myself, and I just... I need to see him. I need to be in his life."

Alex clenched his jaw, his mind racing. He thought of all the sleepless nights, the fear of raising a child alone. But he also thought of Emma, who had already been through so much. Could he really put his son through this?

"Emma doesn't need this right now," Alex said, his voice softer now but still guarded.

"He's been through enough." Julia grits her teeth.

"I'm his mother," Julia whispered, her voice breaking.

"Please, Alex. I know we weren't the best of friends in high school, but please… I just want to talk to him. See if he even wants to know me." Alex swallowed hard, torn between the fierce protectiveness he felt for Emma and the small part of him that knew Julia had a right to try. But was this really the right time? Could Emma handle another upheaval in his life? Before Alex could respond, a small voice came from behind him.

"Dad? Who's at the door?" Alex froze, his heart dropping. He turned slowly to see Emma standing in the hallway, his eyes wide with curiosity. He hadn't heard the entire conversation, but he knew something was up.

Alex looked back at Julia, her eyes shining with hope, and then back at Emma, who was waiting for an answer.

"It's... someone from your past, Emma," Alex said slowly, unsure of how to even begin. He turned back to Julia, his eyes narrowing slightly as he made a decision.

"You can come in. But we take this slow." Julia nodded, relief flooding her features as she stepped inside. Alex watched as Emma's eyes flickered between them, confusion etched on his face.

"Emma, this is Julia… your mom." The words hung in the air like a weight, and Emma's eyes widened as he looked up at the woman standing in the doorway. He didn't say anything, didn't move—just stood there, staring. Julia took a tentative step forward, her voice trembling.

"Hi, Emma..." Emma took a small step back, his hands tightening around the edges of his shirt. He looked up at Alex, uncertainty flickering in his eyes.

"I… I don't understand," Emma whispered, glancing back at the woman who claimed to be his mother.

Alex knelt down beside him, placing a gentle hand on his shoulder.

"I know this is a lot, buddy. We can take our time. You don't have to do anything you're not ready for." Julia stood a few feet away, her eyes filled with longing and guilt.

"I'm so sorry, Emma. I shouldn't have left you on the porch right after you were born... But I'm here now, and I want to get to know you if you'll let me." Emma's lip quivered, and he looked back at Alex, searching for reassurance. Alex smiled softly, though his heart was pounding.

"Whatever you decide, I'm right here with you." Emma nodded slowly, looking back at Sarah with cautious eyes.

"Okay. Maybe... we can talk... A little." It wasn't much, but it was a start. As they sat down in the living room, the weight of the moment pressed down on all of them. The road ahead wasn't going to be easy, but it was clear that everything was about to change—for all of them.
