The morning sun streamed through the curtains, casting a golden glow over the living room. Alex moved through the room with a mix of excitement and apprehension, preparing for Emma's first day of preschool.
The room was abuzz with activity as Alex packed Emma's little backpack with essentials: a snack, a water bottle, and a favorite toy for comfort.
"There we go… that should be good…" Emma, now a bright-eyed four-year-old, was dressed in a new outfit—an adorable shirt with a cartoon character and comfortable jeans. He watched with wide, curious eyes as Alex fussed over the details. His long blonde hair pinned back in a short ponytail. Alex now sported a thin beard, his hair pinned back in a man bun as well, Alex was now 22 years old.
"Alright, Emma… here's your backpack," Alex held up the small, colorful bag with a grin.
"I made sure everything was packed. Are you ready for your first day of school?" Emma's face lit up with a mixture of excitement and uncertainty. He nodded eagerly; his blue eyes sparkling. Alex knelt down to Emma's level, adjusting the straps of the backpack and smoothing down his shirt.
"Remember, you're going to have so much fun today. You'll meet new friends, play with lots of toys, and learn new things," Alex said, trying to keep his tone upbeat and reassuring.
"And if you need anything, you can always tell your teacher, okay?"
Emma clutched his toy and nodded again, a small smile forming on his lips. Alex took a deep breath, his excitement mingling with a tinge of worry. He patted Emma's head gently and then checked the time.
"It's almost time to go. How about we have a quick breakfast first? I made your favorite— pancakes with a little bit of syrup." Emma's eyes widened in delight.
"Pancakes!" he exclaimed; his earlier nervousness momentarily forgotten as he followed Alex to the kitchen. They sat at the table, praying over the day and what awaits them, then sharing a light and cheerful breakfast. Alex used the time to chat about the fun activities Emma might do at preschool, his heart swelling with pride and a touch of melancholy.
As they finished breakfast, Alex quickly gathered the last of Emma's things. They walked together to the car, Emma chattering about the things he hoped to see at preschool. Alex's heart ached slightly as he watched Emma's excited anticipation. He opened the car door and helped Emma into his seat, securing the seatbelt.
"Are you ready, bud?" Alex asked, giving Emma a warm smile.
"Ready!" Emma said with a confident nod. Alex took a deep breath, trying to calm the flutter of nerves in his stomach.
The drive to preschool was filled with Alex's quiet encouragement and Emma's enthusiastic chatter. When they arrived, Alex parked and helped Emma out of the car onto the old parking lot. He walked him across the pedestrian crossing and to the entrance of the preschool, where a colorful sign greeted them. 'Welcome future Bakers!'
"Look at that! Isn't it fun? It has your last name" Alex said, pointing to the sign. Emma's eyes lit up.
"I'm a panfer tru and tru!" Emma's eyes followed his gaze, taking in the bright colors.
They entered the building, and Alex noticed the bright, cheerful atmosphere of the preschool. Teachers and children were mingling, laughter and chatter filling the air. Alex kneeled down to Emma's level once more.
"Alright, buddy, this is where I leave you… Have an amazing day… Remember, I'll be back to pick you up this afternoon," Alex said, his voice steady despite the lump in his throat. Emma hugged Alex tightly.
"I'll miss you, Dada." Alex's heart swelled with emotion. He hugged Emma back, trying to keep his composure.
"I'll miss you too, but I know you're going to have a great time." He watched as Emma walked into the classroom, his little backpack bouncing with each step. Alex gave him one last wave before turning to leave. As he walked back to the car, he took a deep breath, feeling a mix of pride and nervous anticipation for what the day would bring.
