"Come on! Run!"
Katelynn grabbed Lieselotte's hand, the warmth of her touch wrapping around Lieselotte's cold wrist. Pain still throbbed along Lieselotte's neck, but the heat from Katelynn's skin seeped through, dulling the ache like some strange magic, making it drift away.
The night wind stung her cheeks, setting the wound above her temple aflame. Blood had dried to a dark red crust along her hairline, clumping the strands together. Tears and blood had mixed somewhere along the way, matting her hair in hidden knots.
The sky hung black and heavy tonight, save for the moon's eerie glow. In the distance, the haunting cry of a wolf floated through the air.
"Katelynn... I'm so tired..." Lieselotte finally gasped, her breath ragged and raw. She felt like her lungs were about to burst, her throat parched and stinging. The exhaustion blurred into numbness, and her legs threatened to buckle beneath her.
