Colette threw her hands up. "Okay, sure, let's say you're right and this isn't his doing. Then who built it? And why?"
Gwen didn't have an answer yet. The pieces weren't lining up—not in any way that made sense.
"It doesn't matter," Colette said when she stayed silent too long. "It doesn't fucking matter who built this or when they did it because none of this helps us find Lucien or Marie."
"It might," Gwen countered.
"How?" Colette demanded, stepping forward and jabbing a finger toward her chest. "How does knowing some ancient-ass lab exists help us find them? Because all I see is a bunch of dead experiments and broken machines while we're wasting time chasing ghosts."
"Whoever made this thing might still be involved."
"And?"
"And if someone has the resources to build something like this," Gwen continued, "then they've got enough power and influence to be a threat to more than just us."
