"Wait," Amélie said, grabbing Kazuo's arm.
"What?"
She squinted, scanning the horizon. "Something's not right. Look. The city's pitch dark."
Kazuo followed her gaze, his eyes adjusting to the moonlit landscape. The usual twinkling lights of Paris were absent, leaving a darkness broken only by occasional flashes of movement.
"Yeah," he leaned forward. He pointed to a cluster of shadows shifting in the distance. "Check it out. I'm no expert, but I think those are the military moving about."
"But why? What happened?"
"I ain't got a clue."
Sudden shouts and animalistic growls erupted from the ground below, making them both jump.
"Something's really not right," he said.
As if on cue, the small drone zipped back into view, hovering between them. It dropped a phone at their feet before flying away again.
Kazuo scooped up the device and slid across the screen to answer the incoming call. "Hello?"
