Damian's heart skipped a beat. He glanced at Kyle, who was looking down, clearly as rattled as he was. Damian forced himself to keep his gaze steady, the gears turning rapidly in his head as he tried to string together something believable.
"We, uh..." Damian started, swallowing hard, trying to appear calm. "We were... visiting family."
The man's eyebrow arched slightly, an almost amused smile on his lips as he opened the file and scanned a few pages. "Visiting family, you say? Interesting... because according to our records, you two don't have any family nearby."
Kyle shifted uncomfortably, his face pale, his usual bravado nowhere to be found. "Oh, we, uh... we were traveling," he stammered, clearly struggling under the man's piercing gaze. "You know, a road trip."
The man leaned back, folding his hands on the table. "A road trip. Very convenient. And tell me—what's the reason for this road trip?"
