The next day came quickly, and the atmosphere in the tournament area was electric.
Luka and Kaela stood on a platform overlooking the massive arena, where the battles would take place. The arena itself was a vast, circular structure with high walls and towering pillars at the edges, designed to test not just combat skills but also strategy.
Spectators from all over the galaxy packed the stands, their excited voices filling the air with a constant hum of anticipation.Luka adjusted his wristband, feeling a surge of adrenaline as he glanced over at Kaela.
She stood beside him, her expression calm but focused. She didn't show nerves, but Luka knew that beneath her cool exterior, she was just as ready as he was for the upcoming challenge.
"Looks like a decent turnout," Luka said, surveying the crowd and the other contestants who were preparing for their matches.
"Think we'll get to show off?"Kaela smirked, her eyes glinting with confidence. "Depends on who we're up against. But I'm not worried—we've got this."A voice crackled over the station's loudspeakers, announcing the start of the tournament.
"Attention contestants! The first round is about to begin. All participants, report to your designated areas."Luka took a deep breath and exchanged a glance with Kaela.
"Let's do this."They made their way to the mecha docking area, where Vigil and Kaela's draconic mecha were prepped and ready for combat. Both machines gleamed under the bright arena lights, their advanced systems humming with energy.
"Ready to show them what we've got?" Luka asked, climbing into Vigil's cockpit.Kaela's voice crackled over the comms as she settled into her own mecha.
"You know it. Let's make this quick."The two mechas powered up, their systems coming to life as they stepped into the arena. The floor trembled slightly beneath their weight as they moved to their starting positions.
Across from them, their first opponents waited—a pair of mechas painted in sleek black, their designs focused on speed and agility.Luka sized them up, noting the fast, streamlined build of the enemy machines.
"Speed-based models. They'll try to outmaneuver us."Kaela's response was steady and calm. "But they're not as durable. If we can pin them down, it's over."The announcer's voice boomed across the arena, hyping up the crowd.
"Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the first match of the Galactic Duel Tournament! In this corner, we have two fierce competitors, known throughout the sector for their speed and precision:
Team Black Fang! And in the opposite corner, two newcomers, but don't let that fool you—these two are powerhouses in their own right! Introducing Luka Cross and Kaela Drask!"
The crowd cheered as the announcer called their names, but Luka's focus was entirely on the battle ahead. His heart pounded in time with Vigil's systems as he gripped the controls, ready to spring into action.
"Let the match begin!"The sound of a gong echoed across the arena, and in an instant, their opponents surged forward, moving with blinding speed.
Luka barely had time to react before the first of the black mechas was upon him, darting in for a quick strike.
But Luka was ready. With a sharp command, Vigil spun to the side, dodging the attack and bringing up its arm-mounted cannon. A blast of energy shot toward the enemy mecha, but the black machine was too fast, twisting out of the way and coming in for another attack.
Kaela was already engaged with the second mecha, her draconic machine using its wings to hover just above the ground. She swung a massive, clawed arm toward her opponent, but the black mecha darted away, its speed keeping it just out of reach.
"They're quick," Luka muttered over the comms, his eyes narrowing as he calculated his next move.
"But they can't keep this up forever."Kaela's voice crackled in response. "We just need to corner them. Force them into a position where they can't escape."
Luka nodded, adjusting Vigil's stance as the enemy mecha came in for another strike. This time, he was ready. Instead of dodging, Luka met the attack head-on, blocking the enemy's strike with Vigil's arm. The force of the impact reverberated through the cockpit, but Luka held firm, using the opportunity to counterattack.
With a swift movement, Vigil's other arm shot forward, slamming into the side of the black mecha and sending it skidding across the arena floor.
"Got you," Luka muttered, a satisfied grin spreading across his face as he followed up with a blast from Vigil's cannon. The energy shot struck the black mecha directly, and sparks flew as its systems struggled to recover.
Kaela, meanwhile, had managed to pin her opponent against one of the arena's pillars. Her draconic mecha's claws dug into the black machine's armor, preventing it from escaping as she delivered a crushing blow to its torso.
The black mecha let out a burst of smoke as its systems faltered, the pilot inside clearly scrambling to regain contro.
"Finish it, Kaela," Luka called over the comms, his eyes on her fight as he kept his opponent at bay.
"With pleasure," Kaela replied, her voice cool and confident. With a final, powerful strike, Kaela's mecha slammed its claw into the black machine's chest, sending it crashing to the ground. The black mecha twitched for a moment, its systems sputtering before it finally powered down, defeated.
The crowd roared in approval, but Luka wasn't done yet. His opponent, though damaged, was still in the fight, and he could see the pilot inside trying to adjust their tactics.
"They're not giving up easily," Luka muttered.Kaela's voice was calm. "Then we don't give them a chance. Let's end this."
With a quick burst of movement, Luka closed the distance between Vigil and the black mecha. The enemy pilot tried to dodge, but their machine was slower now, its damaged systems no longer able to keep up.
Luka seized the opening and delivered a final, decisive strike to the black mecha's core, sending it crashing to the ground in a shower of sparks.
The crowd erupted into cheers as the announcer's voice boomed across the arena. "And the winners are… Luka Cross and Kaela Drask! What an impressive debut for these two newcomers!"Luka let out a breath, his heart still pounding with the adrenaline of the fight.
He glanced over at Kaela, who gave him a satisfied nod from her cockpit.
"Well done," Kaela said, her voice laced with approval. "We handled that pretty well."Luka grinned, the tension of the battle melting away. "Not bad for a warm-up."They exited the arena, the cheers of the crowd still echoing in their ears.
As they made their way back to the docking bay, Luka felt a sense of accomplishment wash over him. The fight had been intense, but it had also been fun—a reminder of why he loved the thrill of competition.
"Looks like we're moving on to the next round," Kaela said as they walked, a small smile playing on her lips.Luka nodded, already thinking ahead. "And it'll only get tougher from here. But I'm ready."
They reached the docking bay, where their mechas stood waiting, their systems powering down after the battle. Luka ran a hand along Vigil's arm, his mind still buzzing with the excitement of the fight.
But even as they prepared for the next round, Luka knew this was just a step on their larger journey. The tournament was a chance to sharpen their skills, earn valuable rewards, and—most importantly—prepare for whatever awaited them out in the vast galaxy.
Because while the tournament was thrilling, it was the mysteries of the Aether that still called to Luka. And he knew that, with Kaela by his side, they would continue to unlock those secrets, one battle at a time.
