Chapter 34 - Chapter 10: The Haunted Mansion

Ryuto swung effortlessly through the trees, laughing to himself as the wind rushed past. He had been testing out his newly acquired Web Manipulation ability all morning, sending thin, sticky strands of webbing toward the branches overhead and using them to swing from tree to tree. His grin widened with every leap, the excitement building as he felt his agility increasing with each movement.

"This is amazing!" he shouted, landing smoothly on a high branch before launching himself into the air again. "I'm basically a medieval Spider-Man!"

Celeste, standing on the forest floor below with her arms crossed, raised an eyebrow. "Spider-what?"

Ryuto shook his head mid-swing, realizing she wouldn't get the reference. "Never mind. Just think of me as... I don't know, the Web Master or something."

"That sounds ridiculous," Roland called from further down the path, trying to keep up as Ryuto swung effortlessly from one branch to the next. "Can you at least try to act like a normal adventurer for five minutes?"

Ryuto ignored him, too caught up in the thrill of his new power. He let out a triumphant whoop as he executed a perfect flip, landing gracefully on the ground beside them. "You're just jealous," he teased. "I'm faster than all of you now."

Nina, lounging nearby with a smirk, flipped a dagger in her hand. "Fast? Maybe. But let's see you dodge me next time."

"You'll never catch me," Ryuto retorted, sending out a playful burst of webbing toward her. Nina dodged it with ease, laughing as the sticky strand hit a nearby tree.

As much fun as he was having, Ryuto knew they had a job to do. They had just finished a dangerous mission in the underground dungeon, and now the guild had sent them on a new assignment, a haunted mansion deep in the woods.

The party arrived at the mansion by late afternoon, the sun casting long shadows over the forest as they made their way up the overgrown path. The mansion loomed before them, its windows dark and its once-grand facade crumbling with age. The place had an air of abandonment, but even more than that, there was something… off about it.

The door creaked open as they approached, revealing a frail, middle-aged man with deep bags under his eyes. He wore a long, tattered robe, and his hands trembled as he ushered them inside.

"Thank you for coming," the man said, his voice hoarse from what sounded like weeks of sleepless nights. "The spirits… they torment me. I haven't had a moment of peace in months."

Ryuto looked around the dusty, dimly lit entrance hall, his eyes lingering on the cracked mirrors and the peeling wallpaper. "Well," he said, crossing his arms, "I guess we're Ghostbusters now."

Roland frowned. "Ghost-what?"

Ryuto waved him off, muttering, "Never mind. It's just a reference… You'll get used to it."

The man led them deeper into the mansion, his voice shaking as he explained the situation. "It started with the sounds. Footsteps in the night. Whispers in the walls. I tried to ignore it, but soon… things started to move on their own. I could feel them, watching me… Then, the daughter's room became the worst of all. The dolls… they come to life."

Celeste's eyes narrowed. "Dolls? Really?"

The man nodded, his eyes darting toward the shadowed stairs leading to the upper floors. "Please… You have to help me. I'm at my wit's end."

Nina gave Ryuto a sidelong glance. "Looks like we've got our work cut out for us."

Ryuto sighed. "Right. Let's figure out what's going on here before nightfall."

As they began their investigation of the mansion, the tension in the air grew thicker. The creaks and groans of the old house only added to the unsettling atmosphere, and every shadow seemed to shift ominously as they explored.

Ryuto led the group through the dusty halls, his sword drawn and his web-slinging hand ready for any sudden surprises. But despite the eerie feeling in the air, nothing seemed to happen at first.

"Maybe the guy's just losing it," Roland suggested as they moved through the empty dining room, where cobwebs draped the ceiling like tattered curtains. "I mean, the place is creepy, sure, but, "

Suddenly, a loud bang echoed from upstairs, causing everyone to jump.

"What was that?!" Nina asked, her hand flying to her dagger.

Celeste instinctively grabbed Ryuto's arm, her eyes wide. "Did you hear that?"

Ryuto smirked. "Yeah, I heard it. Let's go check it out."

They ascended the stairs cautiously, moving toward the source of the noise. But when they reached the landing, they found nothing but a loose window banging against the wall in the wind.

Nina let out a breath, clearly trying to act unbothered. "Great. Just a window."

Celeste, still clinging to Ryuto's arm, muttered, "I don't like this place."

"None of us do," Ryuto agreed, pulling away from her gently. "Let's just keep going."

As they continued their investigation, they encountered more false alarms, doors slamming shut on their own, objects falling off shelves, eerie laughter in the distance, but each time, it turned out to be nothing. Still, the atmosphere was getting to them.

Every creak and whisper made Nina and Celeste instinctively press closer to Ryuto, each of them taking turns clutching his arm as they moved through the halls. Roland was trying his best to look unfazed, but even he flinched every time something unexpected happened.

"This place is playing tricks on us," Ryuto muttered. "But that doesn't mean it's harmless."

As dusk began to settle, the mansion took on an even more sinister tone. The shadows grew longer, and the once harmless creaks and groans became more pronounced, almost as if the house was waking up.

Then, as the last sliver of daylight faded, the real haunting began.

A chilling wind swept through the house, rattling the windows and extinguishing their lanterns. The temperature plummeted, and the air became thick with an unnatural stillness. All at once, the mansion seemed to come alive.

From the corners of the room, ghostly figures began to materialize, translucent shapes with hollow, sunken eyes and mouths twisted into silent screams. They drifted through the walls, their cold presence making the air feel heavy and oppressive.

"We've got company!" Ryuto shouted, drawing his sword as the first ghost lunged at him, its hands reaching out with long, bony fingers.

Roland swung his sword, cutting through one of the specters, but the blade passed harmlessly through its ghostly form. "We can't hurt them with normal weapons!"

"Then we'll have to use holy magic!" Celeste said, raising her hands and summoning a glowing orb of light. She hurled it toward one of the ghosts, and with a flash, the specter dissolved into mist, its wail echoing through the mansion.

Nina ducked as another ghost swiped at her, narrowly avoiding its grasp. "There's too many of them!"

Ryuto quickly assessed the situation. "We need to split up and take them out room by room. Stay close, but watch your backs, these things won't stop until we're all dead."

As the ghosts continued to swarm them, Ryuto and his party moved through the mansion, battling the relentless spirits with holy magic. But the deeper they went into the house, the more aggressive the ghosts became.

And as they reached the upper floors, the real nightmare awaited them in the daughter's room, the one place the owner had warned them about.

The battle with the ghosts was relentless, each specter more vicious and determined than the last, but Ryuto and his party managed to push through, taking down the spirits one by one with well-timed holy magic. Exhausted but resolute, they made their way toward the heart of the mansion: the daughter's room, the place the owner had warned them about.

As they approached the door, Ryuto could feel the temperature drop even further. A thick layer of frost began to form on the wooden panels, and an oppressive darkness seemed to radiate from behind the door. He gripped his sword tightly, casting a wary glance at his companions.

"This is it," he muttered. "The real nightmare starts here."

Nina, looking tense but determined, nodded. "Let's get this over with. I hate haunted dolls."

Roland, trying to maintain his composure, held his sword at the ready. "Can't be worse than the ghosts we just fought, right?"

Celeste, standing closest to Ryuto, shuddered as she looked at the frost-covered door. "I don't like this… something's really wrong in there."

Ryuto reached out and slowly pushed the door open, the old wood creaking as it revealed the daughter's bedroom. The room was unnervingly intact compared to the rest of the dilapidated mansion. The bed was neatly made, the curtains hung in perfect condition, and the faint scent of lavender lingered in the air.

But the most unsettling part of the room was the dolls.

There were hundreds of them, sitting on shelves, lined up against the walls, propped up in the corners. Each one was eerily lifelike, with porcelain faces and wide, glassy eyes that seemed to follow the group as they entered. Some wore elegant gowns, others simple nightdresses, but all of them shared the same unnatural stillness.

Nina groaned softly. "This is so much worse than I imagined."

Roland raised his sword, eyes darting nervously from one doll to the next. "I don't like the way they're looking at us."

Celeste, already pale, clutched Ryuto's arm. "I have a really bad feeling about this. We should leave."

Before anyone could respond, the door behind them slammed shut, and the room was plunged into darkness. A chorus of giggles erupted from the dolls, the high-pitched sound echoing eerily around the room.

Ryuto's heart pounded in his chest as he drew his sword. "Get ready!"

The air in the room grew thick with a cold, malevolent energy. The giggles grew louder, more distorted, and the dolls began to move.

One by one, they turned their heads, their glassy eyes gleaming in the dim light. The dolls' porcelain faces twisted into sinister smiles as they slowly began to rise from their places on the shelves and the bed. Their delicate limbs cracked unnaturally as they moved, their movements jerky and unsettling.

"Are you kidding me?" Nina shouted, backing up toward the center of the room. "Of course they're alive!"

Suddenly, the first doll leapt from a shelf, moving with terrifying speed. Its tiny hands clawed at Roland's face, forcing him to stumble back in surprise. "These things are fast!" he yelled, swatting it away with his sword.

More dolls began to swarm them, crawling up the walls and floor with inhuman agility. Their small hands clawed and scratched at the party, their high-pitched laughter filling the air.

"Use holy magic!" Ryuto shouted, cutting through one of the dolls with a swift strike of his blade. "Normal attacks won't stop them!"

Celeste nodded, summoning a burst of holy light in her hands and unleashing it at the nearest group of dolls. The light seared through the porcelain creatures, causing them to screech and fall to the ground, shattering into pieces.

Nina darted between the dolls, her daggers flashing as she cut through their fragile limbs. "They keep coming!" she called, her voice strained as she tried to keep the relentless swarm at bay.

Ruda, in her werewolf form, slashed at the dolls with her claws, her powerful strikes sending several of them flying across the room. "We need to find the source of this!" she growled, her eyes glowing in the dim light. "There's something controlling them!"

Ryuto's eyes narrowed as he scanned the room. Amidst the chaos, his gaze locked onto a large doll sitting in the corner of the room, much larger than the others. It was dressed in a tattered, black gown, its face cracked but still smiling eerily. Unlike the others, this doll wasn't moving.

"There!" Ryuto pointed toward the large doll. "That has to be the source!"

With a burst of speed, Ryuto sprinted toward the doll, dodging the smaller ones that tried to block his path. As he reached the larger doll, he could feel the dark magic radiating from it, this was the heart of the curse that plagued the mansion.

"Let's finish this," Ryuto muttered, raising his sword.

Just as Ryuto was about to strike, the large doll's eyes snapped open, glowing with a sinister red light. A wave of dark energy surged through the room, sending Ryuto flying backward. The doll slowly rose to its feet, its limbs cracking and shifting as it grew larger, more monstrous.

The small dolls retreated, gathering around the larger one like an army, their giggles replaced with unsettling whispers. The larger doll's voice echoed through the room, a distorted, childlike tone that sent chills down their spines.

"Why have you come to my room?" the doll's voice asked, its head tilting unnaturally to one side. "You shouldn't be here… This is my home!"

Ryuto scrambled to his feet, gritting his teeth. "You're not real. You're just a spirit clinging to this place."

The doll let out a distorted laugh. "Real or not, you can't stop me. This house is mine. And you… will stay here forever."

With a flick of its hand, the doll sent out another wave of dark energy, forcing Ryuto and the others to take cover.

"Celeste, we need holy magic, now!" Ryuto called, bracing himself for another attack.

Celeste nodded, her hands glowing with a radiant light. She began chanting, summoning a massive burst of holy magic that illuminated the entire room. "Stay close to the light!"

As the holy magic surged forward, the smaller dolls began to disintegrate, their bodies shattering into pieces as the light touched them. The large doll let out an ear-piercing scream as the magic washed over it, causing its porcelain skin to crack and break.

Ryuto saw his chance. With a final burst of energy, he charged toward the doll, his sword glowing with the same holy magic that Celeste had summoned. He leapt into the air and brought his blade down with all his strength, driving it straight into the doll's chest.

The doll let out one final, horrific wail before it collapsed, its body crumbling into dust. The dark energy in the room dissipated, and the oppressive atmosphere lifted, leaving the mansion eerily quiet.

The party stood in the wreckage of the daughter's room, catching their breath as the last remnants of the curse faded away. The oppressive chill that had permeated the mansion was gone, replaced with an almost peaceful stillness.

"We did it," Nina said, wiping sweat from her brow as she sheathed her daggers.

"Those dolls were a nightmare," Roland muttered, kicking a piece of shattered porcelain away. "Glad that's over."

Celeste lowered her hands, the glow of her magic fading. "The spirits are gone. The mansion is cleansed."

Ryuto checked his smartphone system and grinned as a notification appeared.

"Level up! Congratulations, you are now Level 66."

He glanced at the others, seeing the familiar glow of their own level-ups. "Looks like we're all a little stronger now."

Ruda nodded, still in her werewolf form. "Good. We'll need it for whatever's next."

Ryuto turned to the door, the weight of the mission finally lifting from his shoulders. "Let's get out of here. I've had enough haunted mansions for one lifetime."

With the mansion finally rid of its curse, the oppressive atmosphere that had plagued the house was gone. The air felt lighter, and the cold chill that had haunted every corner seemed to dissipate. Ryuto and the rest of the group stood amidst the wreckage in the daughter's room, the shattered remains of the cursed dolls littering the floor.

For a moment, there was nothing but silence, sweet, welcome silence.

"That was… intense," Nina muttered, leaning against a wall to catch her breath.

"Tell me about it," Roland grumbled, his sword still drawn as he cautiously eyed the remains of the large doll. "I never want to see another doll again."

Celeste rubbed her hands together, a flicker of her holy magic still clinging to her fingertips. "The spirits are truly gone now. We've cleansed the house."

Ruda shifted back into her human form, shaking her head to clear the last remnants of the fight. "Good. This place had too much bad energy."

Ryuto checked his smartphone system once again, confirming that the mission was marked as complete. He turned to his party, a tired but triumphant grin on his face. "Let's go let the owner know he's got a spook-free house now."

As they made their way out of the daughter's room and down the winding hallways of the mansion, the difference was palpable. No longer did the shadows feel alive, and the eerie whispers that had once plagued them were gone. The mansion, once a prison of spirits, now felt like an empty shell, still old and decaying, but no longer a source of torment.

Back in the entrance hall, the frail owner of the mansion waited anxiously. His eyes were bloodshot from the lack of sleep, and his fingers trembled as he wrung his hands together. As soon as Ryuto and his party stepped into the hall, the man's eyes widened with hope.

"Is… is it over?" he asked, his voice barely a whisper. "Are the spirits gone?"

Ryuto stepped forward, nodding confidently. "It's over. The spirits are gone, and your house is free from the curse."

The man let out a breath he seemed to have been holding for weeks, his shoulders sagging in relief. "Thank the gods," he muttered, his voice cracking with emotion. "I… I thought I'd never be free of them."

Roland smiled at the man, sheathing his sword. "You're free now. No more ghosts, no more nightmares."

Celeste placed a reassuring hand on the man's shoulder. "You can finally rest easy."

The man's eyes filled with tears of gratitude as he bowed deeply. "Thank you. I don't know how I can ever repay you."

"Well," Ryuto said with a smirk, "the guild will handle the payment, but a little extra wouldn't hurt."

The man chuckled weakly and nodded. "Of course, of course. I'll make sure the guild compensates you generously for your trouble."

With the curse lifted, the party made their way back to the adventurers' guild, their bodies weary from the day's fight. The sun was setting by the time they returned to town, casting long shadows over the streets as they headed toward the guildhall.

Elena, the quest giver, greeted them at the counter, her usual flirtatious smile in place. "Back already? You guys sure work fast."

Ryuto leaned against the counter, his exhaustion evident. "You wouldn't believe what we just dealt with."

Nina rolled her eyes, still feeling jumpy from the dolls. "Let's just say, if I see one more possessed doll, I'm going to lose it."

Elena raised an eyebrow, intrigued. "Sounds like you had quite the adventure."

Ryuto handed over the quest completion report, and Elena began processing it. "Well, considering how difficult that mission was, you'll be well compensated." She handed over a hefty pouch of gold coins. "A hundred gold pieces for dealing with that haunted mess. And I'm sure the mansion's owner will be grateful enough to send more your way soon."

As Ryuto took the gold, he smiled to himself, grateful for the reward. But something still lingered at the back of his mind, the unsettling atmosphere in the mansion, the feeling that something darker still waited for them in the future.

"Congratulations! You've earned 400 experience points!"

"Level up! You are now Level 67."

Ryuto grinned. "Level 67. Not bad."

The rest of the group also received their level-ups, each of them growing stronger from the haunted mission. Despite the horrors they had faced, they had come out victorious, and stronger for it.

As the party sat around the guild's main hall, relaxing after the mission, Ryuto leaned back in his chair, feeling the exhaustion of the day finally catching up to him. Celeste was sitting beside him, her eyes drifting closed as she rested her head on his shoulder. Nina and Roland were chatting at a nearby table, their moods lighter now that they were out of the haunted mansion.

Just as Ryuto was about to drift off into a well-deserved nap, his smartphone system pinged with a notification.

"New Quest Available!"

Ryuto groaned, sitting up straight and rubbing his eyes. "Really? Already?"

Celeste yawned and stretched, looking up at him with a sleepy smile. "What's it this time?"

Ryuto checked the details of the quest, his eyes widening in surprise. "Looks like we're being summoned… by someone important."

Nina perked up from her conversation with Roland. "Who? A noble? The King?"

Ryuto shook his head, still staring at the quest description. "Not quite. It's from the guildmaster himself. He wants to meet us first thing tomorrow."

Roland raised an eyebrow. "That's… unusual."

Celeste sat up fully now, her curiosity piqued. "What could it be about?"

Ryuto pocketed his smartphone and shrugged, though he couldn't help but feel a sense of anticipation growing. "I guess we'll find out tomorrow."

As the night settled in, Ryuto couldn't shake the feeling that their next mission was going to be even more dangerous than the last.
