Chapter 18 - Snow Maiden and Black Forest Cupcakes

Chi Yan looked at the cake and dessert Su Yinhe had taken down, his eyes lighting up.

He had thought the small cake Su Yinhe was going to give him was the pre-packaged kind sold in supermarkets.

But to his surprise, it turned out to be a freshly made cake from a bakery.

"Here... the mango and strawberry ones are a bit sweet," Su Yinhe said, realizing after taking them down that she had picked two very sweet ones.

There was a special dessert section on the second floor, and as the proprietor of the supermarket, she had tried them all.

Some cakes and desserts were exceptionally sweet, so sweet that not even those with a sweet tooth could handle them.

She hadn't paid attention when she picked them up.

She had chosen two very sweet ones.

It seemed that most men didn't really like sweets.

Upon hearing this, Chi Yan's eyes shone even brighter, the excitement in his eyes impossible to conceal.

"I like sweet, thank you. Are they both for me?"

"Yeah." Su Yinhe felt a bit embarrassed, as if she had taken too many. It was all this man's fault for blinding her.

"I really like them."

Chi Yan packed the cake and desserts Su Yinhe had given him into his space. When he left, he hesitated for a moment before leaving a bracelet for her.

"Not bad, getting a token of affection on the first day we meet," Lin Murong truly admired Chi Yan's efficiency.

"You don't have to speak if you can't say anything nice," Chi Yan's mood soured significantly because of Lin Murong.

"This cake, is it made by the owner?" Lin Murong said, swallowing his saliva.

He used to dislike cake, thinking it was something only girls would enjoy.

But that was in the past.

After so many years of hunger following the apocalypse, even a simple steamed bun was a delicacy to him.

Let alone a high-sugar cake.

"No."

"How do you know it wasn't?"

"The style and technique are different." With his many years of experience eating small cakes, he could tell they were not made by the same person.

He suspected there was a specialized small cake shop upstairs.

"Ah? There are styles and techniques for making cakes? Aren't they all the same?" Lin Murong was shocked.

Aren't all cakes made quite similarly?

How had Chi Yan discerned that?

"Isn't it just a cake base, then topped with a bit of cream and some fruit?"

Chi Yan: "…You're not getting any."

Chi Yan's response was a precise strike.

"Don't be like that, I'll just have a bite." Lin Murong was indignant, he had carried Chi Yan's backpack and pushed carts all day, why couldn't he have a bite of the cake?

"You were the one who mentioned the token of affection, weren't you? Do you have the nerve to eat my token of affection?"

"Cough cough cough… Who said that? I didn't. I also want cake." What he had seen, he should have a share in; today, Lin Murong was determined to taste the token of affection… the small cake that Chi Yan received.

"Heh." Chi Yan's laugh was devoid of warmth.

It sent shivers down Lin Murong's spine.

As for Su Yinhe, after Chi Yan left, she suddenly remembered that she hadn't asked for his name.

She felt like she had lost a fortune at that instant, having given him so many desserts without even getting a way to contact him. Of course, ways to contact each other seemed a bit different after the apocalypse.

But still, she hadn't even asked for his name.

Su Yinhe exchanged a few more items, then closed the supermarket early for the day.

After closing, she went upstairs and sat in the dessert section, indulging in two desserts in a row.

Two Snow Maidens, one Black Forest small cake.

Quite nice.

Su Yinhe ate happily at that moment, but come dinner time, she was saddened.

She hadn't grown tired of her seafood feast yet, but tonight she forgot she had eaten so many desserts and cooked another seafood meal, making too much.

She couldn't finish it all.

She looked at the leftover seafood and nearly smacked herself.

Such decadence.

In the past, scrimping and saving for even clam powder, and now casually grabbing so much seafood.

Thank goodness for refrigerators, otherwise, it would all be wasted.

Su Yinhe put the remaining dinner in the fridge, deciding to make a seafood lo mein for breakfast the next morning.

A luxurious day began with a seafood noodle feast.

After cleaning up the leftover dinner, Su Yinhe turned on her tablet and started to draw.

She drew Chi Yan.

Once she finished, Su Yinhe found herself swooning over her own creation again.

Such a handsome man, why wasn't he her colleague?

If she had ever had a colleague this good-looking, she would've guaranteed her punctuality at work every day. Worried about salary deductions or attendance issues? As if.

She skillfully saved her work to the album.

Then, she browsed through her gallery, a collection of treasured works.

Before exiting, she double-checked the password.

After all, these weren't meant for others to see; a password lock was essential. What if one day her tablet got lost and someone picked it up and saw everything?

She still had her pride, after all.

With her album locked, she went on to read two comics, hoping to cool down her emotions.

But...

There were no updates.

The two comics she was following hadn't been updated.

No matter, as long as she followed enough serials, she wouldn't have to worry about not having new updates for comics, and the same went for novels and TV shows.

However, somehow, out of the ten serial comics she followed, nine authors were on leave.

Su Yinhe: "..."

Dead.

Even wanting to spend money was not possible.

No worries, she still had novels, TV dramas, and videos.

Su Yinhe consoled herself.

As she consoled herself, she couldn't help but smack her tablet, but she wanted to read comics!

Comics!

Damn it.

Left with no choice, Su Yinhe turned to novels.

And then she saw an author taking half a month off for the reason of getting married.

If she remembered correctly, from the time she started following this author's novels, the author had taken leave 26 times using the excuse of engagement or marriage.

Could it be that the author was an apocalypse queen?

Regardless, that should not get in the way of her reading novels.

She must resort to dark tactics.

Su Yinhe had begun browsing blades online.

As she browsed, she moved on to perfumes, then to dresses, beef jerky, dried mangoes... She added quite a bit to her shopping cart, and just as she was about to check out, she remembered something.

If she bought these items, how would she receive them? How would the seller ship them? Where to?

The system only mentioned she couldn't send messages; it didn't say she couldn't buy things. So, how would she get them once purchased?

After thinking for a while, Su Yinhe suddenly realized that all the items she bought were available at the supermarket...

So why...

Why did she still want to buy them when they were already available?

Su Yinhe looked at the pile of stuff in her shopping cart, wondering when she had added so much. She only remembered adding a few favorites.

Su Yinhe took a look at her cart, intending to empty it, but couldn't bring herself to do it. Out of sight, out of mind—she switched to a different app.

It was still early, not yet time for her rest.

Her company group chat was still there; she decided to catch up on the gossip.

The company group chat was always brimming with gossip.

Su Yinhe was skilled at lurking, stealthily reading the chatter about her previous colleagues.

Time flew particularly fast when indulging in juicy stories.

After Su Yinhe got her fill of two big gossips and three small ones, and reading about colleagues collectively mentally bashing the boss, time had slipped away.

Even though it was her bedtime, after watching her former colleagues curse out the old boss, Su Yinhe had no trace of sleepiness.

She saw a former colleague talking about burning down the boss's house and really wanted to hand them a bottle of gasoline.

As the colleagues talked about chopping up the old boss, she even thought about mailing them blades.

Both her mind and tongue were bustling with activity.
