Chapter 114 - The Dark Gate of Shadows

A towering gate loomed before Kael, its ancient stone surface marked with cryptic symbols that pulsed faintly with dark energy. As his fingers brushed the entrance, a familiar chill snaked through his veins.

A cold, calculated presence.

Then, like clockwork, the system notification blinked into existence.

Trial of the Dark Gate of Shadows

Condition Met...

Second Trial: Shifting Labyrinth

Objective: Navigate through a labyrinth where walls constantly shift in and out of shadows.

Once you enter this gate, the trial will start. Would you like to proceed?

Kael narrowed his eyes. The second test. The labyrinth was notorious—no escape for the careless. It demanded precision, speed, and most of all, the ability to adapt. Kael took a breath, settling his nerves, feeling the pulse of his Void Daggers strapped to his sides. Their edges thrummed faintly, as if responding to the trial's dark energy.

Without hesitation, Kael stepped through the gate.

The atmosphere inside the labyrinth was suffocating. Thick, oppressive air hung low, illuminated only by flickering torchlight that cast jittering shadows across the stone walls. But the walls—Kael noticed immediately—weren't still. The stone rippled as though alive, shadows melting into it, shifting with every heartbeat.

A soft hum of latent energy thrummed beneath his feet, a distant echo of movement warning him: this place was a predator, and he was its prey.

"Perfect," Kael muttered under his breath, scanning his surroundings. His eyes flickered with amusement. "Let's see what this trial is about."

Gripping his Void Daggers, Kael activated Void Step, his body dissolving into a blur of shadow. He vanished, his form slipping between the folds of reality. In this state, Kael was untargetable, incorporeal. He darted forward, weaving through the labyrinth's shifting walls with ease, a ghost in a maze designed to consume the unaware. As the walls rumbled and tried to crush him, Kael reappeared several meters ahead, the ground shuddering beneath his feet.

The labyrinth groaned behind him, almost irritated at his survival.

As he pressed on, he could feel the labyrinth adjusting, growing impatient. Paths closed off suddenly, swallowed by the encroaching shadows, leaving him with fewer options.

"This is getting cozy," he remarked to himself, but his steps didn't falter. He was no stranger to overwhelming odds.

Kael's instincts screamed danger just before the first creature struck. From the merging shadows of the walls, figures began to emerge—silent, ghastly beings with hollow eyes glowing an unnatural blue.

Phantom Shadows. Born from darkness, they moved like liquid, their forms twisting and rippling as if the shadows themselves willed them into existence.

Kael didn't hesitate. He vanished again with Veil of Shadows, turning invisible just as the nearest Phantom lunged, its claws swiping through the empty space where he once stood. Hidden within the veil, Kael reappeared behind the creature, his Void Daggers humming in his hands.

"Bad move," he whispered.

With a swift movement, he activated Echoing Strike, plunging both daggers into the Phantom's back. The strike landed with force, shadow energy coursing through the blades and leaving a lingering trail of void energy in the creature's form. The Phantom screeched, a hollow, grating sound, as the damage from Kael's hit pulsed through it, eating away at its essence.

But it wasn't alone.

More Phantoms materialized, slipping from the walls like smoke. They circled Kael, their eyes flickering with malevolent hunger. One lunged, but Kael was faster, his body flickering away with a quick Shadow Dash, leaving the creature swiping at nothing but air.

Kael grinned, already moving toward the next junction, his heart pounding in sync with the labyrinth's shifting rhythm.

The further he ventured into the labyrinth, the more hostile it became. The walls shifted faster now, their movements more erratic and violent. A sudden rumble beneath Kael's feet sent him stumbling. He caught himself just in time to see the floor open up into a gaping pit of shadows.

Reflexes honed by countless battles kicked in. Kael leaped, casting Spectral Presence mid-air. A decoy of his shadowy form appeared at the edge of the pit, standing tall, luring the Phantoms to it like moths to flame. The creatures surged toward the decoy, their hollow eyes fixated on the illusion, while Kael twisted mid-leap and activated Void Step, melding into the shadows just before he hit the ground.

He emerged on the other side of the pit, his feet barely touching the solid stone as the decoy crumbled into smoke, having served its purpose.

"Too close," Kael muttered, wiping a bead of sweat from his brow. The labyrinth wasn't just trying to kill him—it was adapting to him. Testing him. Every step was a new trap, every shadow a potential enemy.

And the Phantoms were relentless.

Kael's steps quickened, the walls closing in around him like a tightening noose. Phantoms slithered out of the darkened cracks, their twisted forms faster now, more aggressive. The walls moved as if they had minds of their own, cutting off paths and steering him toward danger.

A narrow corridor appeared ahead, the walls converging unnervingly fast, giving him only moments to react. Kael gritted his teeth. He wouldn't let the labyrinth win. Not yet.

With the shadows closing in, he summoned the last reserves of void energy within him and activated Void Step. His form dissolved into a swirling mass of shadows as the stone walls slammed shut, passing through him harmlessly. Reappearing on the other side, Kael found himself face-to-face with yet another Phantom, this one larger, more solid than the others.

It growled low, readying to attack.

Kael didn't wait. He surged forward, Void Daggers in hand, his movements fluid and calculated. With a final, brutal Echoing Strike, he plunged his daggers into the creature's core. The Phantom shrieked as its body disintegrated into shadow, leaving behind only inky wisps in the air.

Kael landed in a crouch, panting, his eyes gleaming with determination.

At last, Kael reached the heart of the labyrinth, the exit glowing faintly on the far side of a massive chamber. But it was blocked by a towering wall of shadow, thick and impenetrable. Behind him, he heard the distant, shrieking cries of the Phantoms—hundreds of them—rushing toward him in a final, desperate wave.

Kael's body tensed. No time to think. Only to act.

With a growl of his own, Kael called upon the depths of his void power. His daggers pulsed violently in his hands as he activated Dark Infusion, their edges glowing with enhanced energy. The dark energy surged through him, amplifying his speed and power.

The Phantoms reached him first, but they couldn't keep up with his newfound speed. Kael became a blur of motion, his Void Daggers slashing through the creatures before they even had a chance to react. His strikes left behind trails of dark energy, slicing through multiple Phantoms at once. Their bodies disintegrated into smoke and shadow as he moved, too fast for them to counter.

The exit was close now.

Kael focused all his remaining strength on the wall of shadow blocking his path. With a fierce shout, he plunged his daggers into the wall, the dark energy crackling as it collided with the shadow barrier. His blades carved through it, dispersing the darkness in waves.

The barrier collapsed, revealing the exit.

Kael stumbled through, panting heavily as the final Phantoms disintegrated behind him. The labyrinth had been conquered, but his trial wasn't over yet.

Kael stood in the next chamber, his breath steadying as the remnants of the labyrinth dissolved behind him. He could feel the void energy thrumming within him, stronger now, more alive than before. His mastery over the shadows had deepened, his Void Step refined, and his instincts sharper.

The familiar chime of the system echoing in his mind.

Trial of Dark Gate of Shadows : Shifting Labyrinth completed.

Proceeding to the next trial.

"One step closer," he muttered to himself, wiping the sweat from his brow.

Before him, another gate loomed in the distance, taller and darker than the last.

And this time, the shadows beyond felt alive.
