Chapter 22 - Chapter 22: Zurin

I was kneeling and looking down on the ground feeling very anxious. "Oh I see you have already come to a conclusion." Zurin said. Of course I did. Why on earth would I want to fight this people? I'm not crazy. "It is as you say. We are under your protection." I answered. "May I ask why you came to this conclusion? It seems rather sudden." Zurin asked. Sure I was overpowered by a bunch of baby dragons. I am not interested in fighting the adult ones. I was not going to say that, obviously. "The war has taken a large toll on everyone on both sides. If a chance for peace is granted, I will not hesitate to take it." I said. Man I could have been a politician. "True, I did not think that there was a human alive who could take on the three defense pillars and win. You seem to have a small amount of strength." Zurin said. "I thank you but I did not do it alone. My soldiers aided me immensely." I answered. With that I was introduced to the members of the dragon family where I bowed my head with respect to each one. I used the phoenix eyes and saw that the Kids boasted mana reserves of between 50,000 and 100,000. The adults ranged from 200,000 to 2 million in mana reserves. The population of the dragon family was around 230. They were all in humanoid form. However, they looked sickly despite their overwhelmingly powerful mana reserves.

[Inbreeding for countless generations has resulted in this weaker species.]

I can see that happening, after all they were connected through the family tree at some point. I was then led to another room separate from the hall. "Chrono, you look well. The last time we saw each other you were a size smaller." Zora started the conversation. "Yes. I decided to rebuild my body to meet the war requirements." I said. "Rebuild your body? Is that even possible?" Zari asked. "I can do it but I don't know if other people can though." I answered. "So it is as you said brother. He might have a way to save us." Zurin the emperor dragon added. Save them? From what? They are the ones who should be saving me. "Save you?" I asked bewildered. "Yes. We have no desire to rule the human realm however, we shall use every means possible to ensure our survival." Zurin said. Why then start a war and kill thousands of people? "I still do not follow." I said. "Brother." Zurin ushered Zora to talk. "In ancient times there were many species of dragons in this world. Records talk about them being lords of the six attributes. Fire, Water, Wind, Earth, Light and Darkness. It is only us the fire Dragons who currently exist. This are the results of a great war that happened among the dragon families. We require your help because even now we are currently moving towards extinction." Zora said. Well what the hell am I supposed to do? "Do you know about the continent of Yaran?" Zari asked. "I only know that it is northeast of this Island." I answered. A brief history about Yaran was described to me in detail. Apparently, there were four major races in the continent. The Fae known for their medicine, the gnomes and dwarves known for their artisan skills and the Vampires known for their terror. The Fae, gnomes and dwarves were very important to the dragons. Through their assistance, the fire dragons were able to maintain their population for a millennia. In exchange, they offered protection against the violent and ruthless vampires who often preyed on them. However, the situation in the last century has been going out of control. The population of vampires has increased significantly while that of the fire dragons has reduced dramatically. Their mortality rate for children was over 80%. It is expected that if things continue, there will not be another generation of dragons and the vampires will spread all over the continent and finally end up here in this island. The last dragon to be born was over 200 years ago. Since then, a 100% mortality rate for their children was suffered.

"There were reports that you managed to turn a fox and a crow into a different species. We are hoping that you do the same to us. This will have a long term benefit for you as well." Zora concluded. That is absurd. How am I supposed to do that?

[Theoretically it is possible but you lack enough strength to turn an adult dragon to a different species.]

[I recommend trying with the weakest one.]

I asked for more information from my companion. It was possible to change the species by destroying and rebuilding their bodies after receiving their consent. I could then infuse their new bodies with the attributes I control presently. That is dark, wind and fire attributes. "If I do help you with this endeavor, do you guarantee that you will leave the human population alone?" I asked. Now I had a bargaining chip so all the fear of meekly accepting their conditions was gone. "Of course, I have no desire to rule over humans." Zurin said. "Okay. Would you mind calling in the youngest child. She seemed quite sickly." I asked. "Do you mean to try with her? I must object. Use me as your test subject." Zora said. "I would if I could. Unfortunately you are too strong for me currently." I said. The sickly child was carried in too weak to even stand. I assume that these must be her parents. I got up from my chair and held her with both of my arms. I calmed her down and asked her not to resist the changes in her body because they were meant to help her. I used matter disintegration and her form changed to a sprinkling white cloud. I then infused the cloud with my wind magic while condensing the floating shiny particles. I then conjured some clothes for her body because I learnt the lesson last time with my experience.

[You have gained the ability dragon fire and dragon wind breaths.]

Well that was unexpected. I didn't actually think I was going to gain anything. The whole thing was completed in a few minutes. After the blinding light subsided, a healthy looking girl emerged. I was feeling dizzy and was supported by Zora before I hit the ground. I was very exhausted. I glanced over and saw the girl opening her eyes. "Mom, Dad I feel very strong. I am not sick anymore." The girl said as she landed on the ground. The parents rushed in and hugged her tightly while crying. "Wonderful, we might actually be saved." Zora shouted. Zurin and his sister Zari looked shocked and perplexed. I glanced at the girl using my phoenix eagle once more and was shocked. Her mana reserves before this were 50,000 but now they had ballooned to 158,000.

[Your physical strength has increased by 100% value is now 144,000

Your mana reserves increased by 100% value is now 254,000

Your speed has increased by 500% value is now 6000.]

[Yes. She now wields both fire and wind attributes.]

Wait what? Dual wielder. "Hey little miss, can you try casting fire magic." I said. She did so effortlessly. "Now try casting a wind spell." I said. I explained to her how to go about it and she was successful after a few attempts. "I can cast both fire and wind mommy. Did you see that?" The little girl shouted happily. Hmm interesting, so what race of dragon is she now I wonder? "That is absurd. I have never heard of this in my whole existence." Zurin shouted. Zora who was still supporting me responded to his brother. "At last, we can now rebuild our race and make it stronger than ever before." We were then ushered back to the open hall where the other dragons were waiting to be briefed about our talks. The murmuring grew louder and louder once they saw the little girl at the podium. She had been sickly just a few moments ago but was now walking on her two feet while smiling."We have found a new hope that our glorious species will continue to live on." Zurin began his speech. He explained what had happened in the office and was met with loud gasps from the audience. The highlight of the day was when the little girl was asked to perform both wind and fire spells which she did. The murmuring had now developed into full on shouting and cheers. I had regained some strength faster than I had anticipated. Perhaps my recovery speed has increased because of the overall increase in my speed. I was now standing on the podium beside the emperor dragon. Parents were now shouting to have their sons and daughters next in line. I was ushered by the emperor dragon to address them. "it is not possible to do this right now. I ask that you give me time to learn how to control other attributes as well so that a repeat of the current situation may not occur. This exercise is also very tiring and cannot be done at rapid pace. I ask that you have patience." I said. The crowd cheered. "What do you mean by other attributes?" Zurin whispered to me while the crowd was celebrating loudly. "I can control all the attributes but I have only learnt to control three." I answered. "You can control all attributes like the legendary Dark Dragons?" Zurin asked in shock." Makes sense that a dark dragon could control all the attributes. I should wait before giving out the dark attribute to this dragons. "Yes I can control all of them." I answered. The rest of the event was over after I promised to return once in a while to evolve their species. The war negotiations had turned immensely towards my favor. It was declared that a permanent ceasefire was agreed upon and that the humans were to maintain their autonomy. I left in the morning and flew back to report the outcome of my negotiations to the Talons. I asked Zari to teach me the various techniques that she knew including fight once things cooled down a bit. It had been two days after I left the Dark Talon's field hospital and went towards the dragon's lair. I landed at the administrative tent and tucked away my white wings. It was noon at this point. "Sir White Eagle! I am glad that you came back." The Dark Talon said. The other Talons bowed as I entered the tent. I explained to them that I had brokered an agreement with the emperor dragon and an agreement was reached. I did not tell them that the price was me evolving their species. Soon, the word had spread all around the camp that the war was over. Cheers of joy were heard throughout. People were dancing, singing and even crying.

Still, this war was really unnecessary. Starting a war in order to force me to help the dragon species. Why not ask for my help? Well I doubt I could have done it even if it was possible. There was really nothing for me to gain and would have flatly denied offering my aid. Now that I know that it is making me stronger and helping in the long-term, I have no qualms about it. If the Vampire species is out of control and is expected to reach the island within this century if nothing is done about it, I will need all the help I could get. I also need to get stronger. Much stronger.
