Chapter 20 - Cute Raccoon

"What hospital?" He demanded.

"Saint Patrick's." Ethan said to Levi's back as he had already started leaving his office.

Ethan quickly called the driver and told him to get ready to go out.

Lyse lay in the hospital bed, her head throbbing painfully. She remembered the car accident, the goats, and Max's truck. For now she was safe, surrounded by the sterile white walls of the hospital but for how long?

She was still worried about Max and what he would try to do to her if he was not captured soon, plus what if he knew that she was going to see Janine and he tried to find her. She also wondered how she had gotten to the hospital.

A nurse entered the room, a clipboard in her hand. "How are you feeling, Ms. Spade?" she asked.

Lyse groaned. "My head hurts," she replied.

The nurse smiled. "That is to be expected after a concussion, let's be thankful you had your seatbelt on. The doctor will be in to see you soon."

As the nurse left the room, Lyse closed her eyes. She was exhausted, both physically and emotionally, she just wanted to go home and sleep. Her eyes flew open as she thought of James worrying about her then she relaxed when she remembered that she had told him she would be gone for a couple of days.

A little while after, a doctor entered the room and he picked up the clipboard at the foot of the bed.

"Ms. Spade," he said, "I am Dr. Thompson and I am here to tell you that you have suffered a concussion and a minor head injury. Fortunately, the injury is not serious and should heal without any lasting effects or scars."

Lyse sighed in relief, maybe that meant that she would not need to stay in the hospital too long, imagine what Mr Van Doren would think if he found out she had gotten into an accident after he asked her to go to the hospital. "Thank goodness," she said.

The doctor nodded. "You will need to take it easy for the next few days, but I am confident that you will make a full recovery soon."

Lyse nodded, trying to relax. She was relieved to know that she wasn't seriously injured and hopefully she would be able to leave very soon. But she was still very worried about Max. She didn't know what he would do next.

"Please, do you know who brought me here?" She asked and the doctor frowned thoughtfully.

"It was a young man, I am sure he will come around to check on you. Why don't you just rest." With that the doctor returned her chart and left her alone.

With the doctor gone, Lyse drifted off to sleep while Levi arrived at the hospital. He had been frantic since he heard about the accident and the driver had not driven the car fast enough for his satisfaction.

Ethan had been a little surprised to see his usually calm boss look so panicked. He was still in confusion over the happenings of the past couple of weeks but his boss was not one to explain his motives so he knew to shut his mouth and do as instructed.

When Levi got to the hospital, he waited impatiently in the waiting room, pacing while his heart pounded in his chest. He was terrified that Lyse might be seriously hurt.

Finally, a doctor emerged from the emergency room and he rushed over to him. "How is she?" he asked, his voice trembling despite his efforts to remain unshaken.

"She is stable," the doctor replied. "She has a concussion and a head injury, but we are lucky that is all. She is expected to make a full recovery."

Levi breathed a sigh of relief. "Thank goodness," he said.

The doctor nodded. "You can go and see her now."

Now that he knew that nothing too serious had happened to her, Levi walked in an unhurried gait to Lyse's room, his heart filled with gratitude. He sat down beside her bed and stared at the bandage around her head and the black eye that made her look like a raccoon, a cute raccoon.

Now that her face was devoid of any makeup and it looked so pale, she looked so very vulnerable and he felt guilt creep up on him. She was too young to be married to an old man like him.

As if sensing that someone had come into the room, Lyse opened her eyes and smiled weakly, her senses fogged up by the cocktail of drugs she had been administered.

"Oh look," she giggled when she saw Levi. "It's my boss the grouchy playboy."

Levi raised an eyebrow at her tone and realized that it was most likely the drugs that were affecting her. She was giggling exactly the same way that she had the first time he had met her when she was drunk.

It seemed that he was doomed to amuse her only when she was out of her mind. She was cute intoxicated but he much preferred her sober.

"No, it's not your boss. It's your husband." He said and she giggled some more.

"My husband?" She asked, "Hmmm. My husband is very handsome, lucky me."

Levi was taken aback by her comment and he watched as she opened her mouth wide and yawned then immediately fell asleep.

Levi watched her sleep for a few minutes then he got up and went outside where Ethan was waiting for him.

"I have taken care of everything and she will be moved to the VIP ward. Joel is also waiting."

"Let's go." Levi said and walked towards the entrance.

As much as he did not want to leave Lyse alone he knew how it would look if he remained so he instructed Ethan to call Lyse's best friend and have him come and stay with her while he got to the bottom of how Lyse had gotten hurt.
