### Chapter 5: **The Price of Power**
The air in *Chroma-Veila* was unnaturally still, the vibrant, swirling skies muted by the rising plumes of smoke that lingered in the aftermath of the explosion. Zynth stood frozen in the center of the training grounds, his heart still pounding in his chest, the remnants of the blue flames that had engulfed him now nothing more than faint sparks flickering in the air around him. His body ached, bruised and battered from the battle with Orion, but the physical pain paled in comparison to the weight pressing down on his mind.
Orion Flare—the greatest warrior among the Aurora Hunters—was dead. And Zynth had killed him.
The whispers of the crowd grew louder, swirling around him like a storm of voices filled with awe, fear, and disbelief.
"The Blue Atomic Power… it's real."
"I've never seen anything like it…"
"He killed Orion with a single strike…"
Zynth's legs trembled beneath him as he struggled to remain standing, the realization of what had just happened crashing down on him like a tidal wave. His skin flickered between pale blue and sickly green, his emotions too raw, too chaotic for him to control. He wanted to speak, to defend himself, but the words stuck in his throat. What could he even say? He hadn't meant for this to happen. The power that had exploded from him wasn't something he understood. It had surged up from the deepest part of him—wild, uncontrollable—and now it had claimed the life of one of the realm's most revered warriors.
"Silence," a voice commanded, cutting through the noise like a blade. Thaliss, the lead instructor, stepped forward, his gaze fixed on Zynth. The usual calm indifference that marked his face had been replaced with something far more intense—an unreadable mix of calculation and something akin to concern.
The crowd fell quiet, all eyes turning toward the towering figure of Thaliss as he approached Zynth. His silver eyes bore into Zynth, cold and unyielding.
"The trial is over," Thaliss announced, his voice carrying a finality that sent a shiver down Zynth's spine. "Zyntherius Luminas has passed."
Zynth blinked in disbelief, his thoughts muddled. Passed? How could he have passed when he had destroyed everything?
Thaliss's eyes never left Zynth's. "You landed a strike on Orion. The terms of the trial have been met, regardless of the… circumstances. You are now an Aurora Hunter."
The weight of those words pressed down on Zynth, his mind struggling to grasp the reality of the situation. He had trained his entire life for this moment—dreamed of becoming an Aurora Hunter, of following in his father's footsteps. But not like this. Not with blood on his hands.
A murmur rippled through the crowd of trainees and Hunters. Even they seemed unsure of how to react. The trial had been simple: land a hit, and you become a Hunter. But no one had ever imagined that the hit would be a killing blow.
As the tension in the air grew thicker, a voice from the back of the crowd broke through the silence.
"This isn't right. He killed Orion."
Heads turned as *Kiros Ven* stepped forward, his eyes blazing with anger. Kiros was one of the top trainees, and like Zynth, he had been preparing for the trials with the hope of becoming a Hunter. But now, standing before Zynth, his expression was filled with bitterness and fury.
"This wasn't just about landing a hit, Thaliss," Kiros spat, his voice shaking. "He unleashed something dangerous. Something none of us understand. How can you just let him join after that?"
Thaliss's gaze shifted to Kiros, his eyes narrowing slightly. "The trial's terms were clear. Zyntherius met them. The circumstances were unfortunate, yes, but the power he unleashed was not his fault."
"Not his fault?" Kiros took a step closer, his fists clenched. "He killed the best among us. He's not ready to be a Hunter. He's a threat."
Zynth's heart raced, his chest tight with a mixture of guilt and frustration. He hadn't asked for the power that had surged out of him. He hadn't meant to kill Orion. But Kiros's words cut deep because, in a way, they echoed his own thoughts. He didn't feel like he belonged here. He didn't feel worthy of the title of Hunter.
But before Zynth could speak, Thaliss raised a hand, silencing Kiros with a single, commanding gesture.
"This power," Thaliss said, his voice low and measured, "is something rare. Few in the history of *Chroma-Veila* have ever wielded the Blue Atomic Power. It is true that Zyntherius does not yet understand it, but that is why he must be trained—why he must be taught control. To reject him now would be to allow this power to grow unchecked. And if that happens, it would be far more dangerous than anything we have witnessed today."
Kiros stared at Thaliss, his jaw clenched in defiance, but he said nothing more. The weight of Thaliss's words seemed to settle over the entire crowd, the tension easing just slightly.
Zynth, still kneeling beside Orion's body, looked up at Thaliss. "I… I didn't mean to…" His voice was hoarse, his throat dry. "I didn't know this would happen."
Thaliss's expression softened just a fraction. "I know. But now that this power has awakened in you, you must take responsibility for it. You must learn to control it. That is what it means to be an Aurora Hunter."
The crowd remained silent as Zynth slowly rose to his feet, the weight of everything that had happened pressing down on him like an invisible force. He felt small, insignificant, even as Thaliss spoke of him possessing a rare power that could reshape worlds. He didn't want this power. He had only wanted to prove himself. And yet, here he was—standing in the aftermath of something far beyond his control.
Thaliss turned toward the crowd, his voice firm. "This trial is over. Zyntherius Luminas is now one of us. He will be trained, as we are all trained. And we will ensure that the power within him is guided, controlled, and never again unleashed in such a reckless manner."
Kiros shot Zynth one last glare before turning and walking away, his shoulders tense with barely-contained anger. Zynth watched him go, feeling the weight of Kiros's resentment like a knife in his back.
The crowd began to disperse slowly, the murmurs of disbelief and shock still hanging in the air. Zynth stood alone amidst the devastation, the ashes of the explosion swirling around his feet.
Thaliss approached him, his expression serious but not unkind. "Walk with me," he said quietly.
Zynth nodded numbly, following Thaliss as they moved away from the center of the training grounds. They walked in silence for a few moments, the sounds of the crowd fading into the distance. The air was still thick with smoke, the remains of Orion's body now being attended to by other Hunters. Zynth couldn't bring himself to look back.
As they reached a quieter part of the grounds, Thaliss stopped and turned to face Zynth, his silver eyes studying him carefully. "You're overwhelmed," he said simply.
Zynth blinked, his mind still spinning. "I don't understand what happened. That power… I didn't mean for it to…"
Thaliss nodded. "The Blue Atomic Power is not something that can be easily controlled. It is a force of pure, raw energy—one that only a few are born with, and even fewer can learn to master. It is said to be a gift, but also a curse. Those who wield it are destined for great things, but the path is fraught with danger."
Zynth swallowed hard, his throat tight. "I didn't want this. I just… I just wanted to be a Hunter. Like my father."
Thaliss's gaze softened. "And you will be. But you must also accept that you are more than just a Hunter now. This power chose you for a reason, Zyntherius. It is not something you can run from, nor something you can ignore. You must learn to control it, or it will control you."
Zynth looked down at his hands, still trembling slightly from the aftermath of the explosion. "What if I can't? What if… what if I hurt someone else?"
Thaliss placed a hand on Zynth's shoulder, his grip firm but reassuring. "You will learn. That is why we are here. To teach you, to guide you. You are not alone in this."
Zynth looked up at Thaliss, searching his eyes for any sign of doubt. But there was none. Thaliss believed in him, despite everything that had happened. Despite the destruction he had caused.
For the first time since the explosion, a flicker of hope sparked in Zynth's chest. It was small, fragile, but it was there.
"What do I do now?" Zynth asked, his voice quiet.
Thaliss's lips twitched into a faint smile. "Now, you begin your training. You are an Aurora Hunter, Zyntherius. But your journey is just beginning. There is much you must learn—about your power, about the multiverse, and about the enemies that lie beyond the rifts."
Zynth nodded, his resolve hardening. He still didn't fully understand the power that had awoken within him, but he knew one thing for certain: he would not let it consume him. He would learn to control it. He had to.
For his father.
For Orion.
For himself.
As the two walked back toward the Academy, the horizon of *Chroma-Veila* shimmered with its ever-changing colors, the twilight casting long shadows over the ruins of the training grounds. And in the depths of Zynth's chest, the Blue Atomic Power stirred once more—quiet, but ever-present. Waiting.
