Chapter 6 - Chapter 6: Fractures Beneath the Surface

The gentle hum of magic pulsed through *Chroma-Veila*'s vibrant skies as Zynth moved through the Aurora Hunters' training grounds, his steps steady but his thoughts far from settled. The energy of the realm seemed to flow around him, but it did little to ease the weight of responsibility pressing on his chest.

Since passing the trial and officially joining the Hunters, Zynth had thrown himself into his training, determined to master the Blue Atomic Power that now lay dormant beneath his skin. Every day was a new challenge, pushing him further, testing his limits, and forcing him to confront the volatile magic inside him. The Hunters had given him access to the highest levels of training, pairing him with seasoned veterans who knew how to handle powerful magic, but none had wielded anything like the force inside him.

Still, Zynth refused to let it consume him. He couldn't afford to.

"Focus," Thaliss's voice snapped through the haze of Zynth's wandering thoughts. The lead instructor stood at a distance, his arms crossed as he watched Zynth with a critical eye. "You're letting your mind drift again."

Zynth clenched his fists, the cold pulse of the Blue Atomic Power flickering in the back of his consciousness. He could feel it there, waiting for him to tap into it, but every time he did, it felt like trying to harness the wind in his bare hands—slippery, unpredictable, and prone to destruction.

"I'm trying," Zynth muttered under his breath, taking a deep breath to steady himself. His skin flickered between hues of blue and silver, signaling his focus. He extended his hands, calling on the magic within, willing it to bend to his will.

A shimmering flame of blue fire flickered to life in his palms, small at first, but growing stronger as he concentrated. The energy hummed through his veins, the force of it almost intoxicating, but he kept it in check—pushing, pulling, controlling.

"There," Thaliss said, his tone more neutral now. "Keep that focus. Don't let the power overtake you."

Zynth nodded, his eyes narrowing as he poured more energy into the flame, expanding it, shaping it into something more precise. He could feel the potential within him—the raw, untamed power that had erupted during the trial with Orion. But now, it was different. He wasn't the scared boy who had lost control. He was a Hunter now, and he would master this.

But as the flame grew, a sudden wave of doubt washed over him. A memory, unbidden, flashed through his mind—Aurelia's voice, full of excitement and fear, as she spoke of the realms beyond *Chroma-Veila*. Her obsession with exploring the multiverse had only grown stronger in recent weeks, and Zynth had seen the look in her eyes—the same look that haunted him now. Curiosity. Recklessness.

"Zyntherius!" Thaliss's shout yanked him back to the present, but it was too late.

The flame in his hands surged, swelling out of control, its blue light brightening to an unbearable intensity. Zynth gasped as the power slipped from his grip, the force of it rushing toward the training dummies with a blast that sent them toppling to the ground, charred and smoldering.

Zynth stumbled back, his heart pounding as the fire died out, leaving only a lingering sense of failure in its wake.

Thaliss approached, his face a mask of calm, though there was a hint of disappointment in his eyes. "You're pushing too hard."

"I know," Zynth said through gritted teeth, his fists clenching. "I had it, I—"

"You're not listening," Thaliss cut him off, his voice firm. "This power is not something you can simply control through sheer will. It will destroy you if you try to bend it to your desires."

Zynth's jaw tightened. He hated how right Thaliss was. The Blue Atomic Power was unlike anything he had ever known—raw, elemental, and terrifying in its potential. No matter how hard he tried to harness it, there was always a moment when it slipped beyond his reach, like a wild beast refusing to be tamed.

Thaliss sighed, his gaze softening slightly. "You've made progress, Zyntherius. But you're distracted. Your mind is elsewhere."

Zynth lowered his eyes, guilt bubbling in his chest. "Aurelia," he admitted quietly. "She's… she's been getting deeper into her research. Into the realms. She's talking about opening rifts, about exploring the multiverse. I'm worried about her."

Thaliss studied him for a long moment before nodding slowly. "Your bond with her is strong. I can see that. But you must understand that your paths may not always align. You have your duties now. She has hers."

"I know," Zynth said, his voice heavy with uncertainty. "But I feel like she's going too far. She's obsessed with what's out there. I'm afraid it's going to end badly."

Thaliss's expression remained unreadable, but his voice was softer now. "The multiverse is a dangerous place, full of unknowns. But people like Aurelia are driven by curiosity, by the need to understand. You cannot stop her from following her path, Zyntherius. You can only be there when she needs you."

Zynth nodded, though the unease in his chest didn't fade. He knew Thaliss was right. Aurelia's curiosity had always been her greatest strength—and her greatest weakness. She was fearless in her pursuit of knowledge, and that made her both brilliant and reckless.

But as Zynth stood there, staring at the charred remains of the training dummies, he couldn't shake the feeling that something far darker was on the horizon—something that neither he nor Aurelia fully understood.

#### Later That Evening

After training, Zynth found himself standing at the entrance to the Academy's research labs. He hadn't planned on visiting Aurelia tonight, but after his conversation with Thaliss, he couldn't get her out of his mind. He needed to talk to her, to see where her head was. Maybe then he could understand what was driving her so relentlessly.

The halls were quiet as he made his way toward the lab where Aurelia spent most of her time these days. The air was cool, the soft hum of magic-tech machinery filling the background as he approached the door.

He found her hunched over a glowing control panel, her face illuminated by the soft light of the console. Her skin shimmered in shades of green and gold—her typical colors when she was deep in thought. The sight of her brought a strange comfort to Zynth, though it was tinged with worry.

"Aurelia," he called softly.

She looked up, her expression brightening when she saw him. "Zynth! I didn't expect to see you here."

Zynth stepped closer, his eyes flicking to the array of data displayed on the console. The complex diagrams and rift maps made his head spin. "I wanted to check in. You've been working a lot."

Aurelia smiled, though it didn't quite reach her eyes. "You know me. Always chasing after something."

"I'm worried about you," Zynth said, his voice serious. "This rift project… it feels like it's consuming you."

Aurelia's smile faded, her skin shifting to a more muted shade of green. "I know how it looks, but Zynth, this is important. We're on the verge of something incredible. We've discovered patterns in the rift anomalies—stable frequencies that could allow us to open controlled rifts to other realms. Do you understand what that means?"

Zynth's stomach churned. "I understand the danger. The rifts aren't stable, Aurelia. You've seen what happens when they go wrong. You've seen the creatures that come through."

"That's why we need to control them!" Aurelia insisted, her voice rising. "If we can figure out how to open and close rifts on our own terms, we can control the flow of magic between realms. We could protect *Chroma-Veila* better than ever before. We could learn so much about the multiverse, about our place in it."

Zynth shook his head, his frustration mounting. "And what if it goes wrong? What if it tears our realm apart?"

Aurelia's gaze softened, her hand reaching for his. "Zynth, I'm not doing this recklessly. I know the risks. But we have to try. This is bigger than us—bigger than *Chroma-Veila*."

Zynth stared into her eyes, his heart torn. He loved her—he always had—but he couldn't shake the fear that her ambition was leading them down a dangerous path.

"I just don't want to lose you," he said quietly.

"You won't," she whispered, squeezing his hand. "But you have to trust me."

Zynth nodded, though the unease in his chest only deepened.
