Chapter 2 - AWAKING IN ASHES

After being unconscious for three days, Ryan felt as though his surroundings had undergone a complete transformation upon his return to consciousness. The faces—all of them strangers—were the first thing that caught his attention despite the blurry vision and throbbing in his head. He was in a little, improvised room, its walls roughly gathered from scrap wood and plastic sheets. Sweat and fear permeated the damp air. He instinctively reached for the belt sheath, where his gun ought to have been. His fingers got a handle on at only air. He was shaken to his core by the weapon's absence. Expecting to find enemies, terrorists, or anyone else who could explain the overwhelming sense of danger that surrounded him, he scanned the room with a rapid breath. A soft but firm voice spoke up before he could respond further. "Hello, quiet down. Here, you are safe. Ryan jerked his head in the direction of the voice's source. A young woman with a calm but alert expression was standing near the door with her dark hair pulled back. Her eyes were filled with a mixture of empathy and caution as she looked at him as though she understood his fear. "Where are you?" Ryan croaked, his voice barely rising above a whisper and his dry throat. As she cautiously approached him, the woman explained, "You're in a refugee camp." After the city was destroyed, we discovered you. You are fortunate to be alive. Is the city over? Ryan's thoughts raced. The mission was his last recollection. the chaos, the fire, and the explosions. He was working undercover to get a diamond that had a lot of political value. He had broken into the ruthless Hyena terrorist organization, which was terrorizing the area. Then, everything had failed. He had been ambushed and the mission had been compromised. However, he was now alive among civilians who appeared to be unaware of his identity. He kept his demeanor unbiased, not having any desire to offer his disarray — or his personality. "What took place?" He inquired, attempting to put the pieces together. She sat on the edge of a nearby chair and said her name was Allison. She said, her voice dark with sadness, "The city was hit hard." The attack destroyed the majority of it. We figured out how to get away from without a moment to spare, yet... a many individuals didn't make it." Ryan listened cautiously, yet something didn't make any sense. He hadn't been in the city when the attack happened. He was in the middle of a procedure to get the diamond back. He knew in his gut that something more significant had occurred. "Who are you?" He looked at her and finally asked. With a small, sad smile, Allison replied, "I'm just a survivor." "Like most of us here. When everything went down, we had no real option except to escape. We've been trying to stay alive by moving around. Ryan gestured however remained quiet about his doubts. He did not yet have any faith in anyone. He would cooperate for the time being by acting like a lost citizen with no past. He was aware that revealing his identity as a government agent could jeopardize both the mission and his life. He could not be identified at all. Ryan inquired of Allison if there was a radio or television nearby once he had regained some strength. Anything that could assist him in determining what had transpired and how to proceed was needed as information. She led him to a common area with a broken television propped up on a table. Ryan was able to tune into a news channel despite the weak signal. What he saw compelled his blood run cold. The newscaster described devastation, an unsuccessful mission, and an enigmatic disappearance of a diamond. However, the announcement that two government agents had been killed in action—and Ryan was one of them—hit Ryan the hardest. His chest was pounding as he leaned back in the chair. Dead. He was deemed deceased. It's likely that his team had returned to the base to continue the mission despite his absence. Ryan, on the other hand, was no longer a part of the world. His psyche twirled with contemplations. The jewel was still out there, and the Hyena would remain determined to get it. Ryan realized that he was now alone. There is no backup. No official directives. Only he, the diamond, and a nation on the verge of collapse. This was currently an exclusive mission, and he had no real option except to own it. Ryan's team was having trouble adjusting to the defeat back at the base. Davis, a seasoned agent who was Ryan's closest friend, was chosen to lead the remaining operation. Avenging Ryan and the other dead agent was the first priority. The Hyena were taken aback when Davis launched an attack. The terrorist organization was dealt a significant blow by the operation, but it was insufficient. The Hyena regrouped and continued to pursue the diamond with ferocity. As the terrorists intensified their attacks, the nation's violence persisted. Ryan, on the other hand, adjusted to life at the camp for refugees. He had no weapons, no assets, and no reasonable method for returning to his central goal. He thought about giving up on the operation for the first time. He worked around the camp during the day and learned from Allison how to survive in their war-ravaged world. Together, they established a modest business in which they traded goods with other surviving survivors to make ends meet. Ryan began to develop feelings for Allison over the course of the following weeks and months. She had been his anchor in the mayhem, a signal of light in his most obscure minutes. Their companionship provided him with solace, and before long, they were spending the majority of their days together. Ryan became her closest relative after Allison's parents were killed in the attack on the city. Notwithstanding the developing connection between them, Ryan actually couldn't force himself to come clean with her that he was an administration specialist determined to recuperate a jewel that could change the destiny of their country. Like a flower growing in the ruins of their shattered world, their love quietly grew. Ryan allowed himself to believe that maybe, just maybe, he could live a normal life with her because they were inseparable. He had given up on the mission and was content to live in the refugee camp, away from the danger and violence that had once characterized his life. However, fate had other ideas. Ryan once left the camp to go to a nearby village to get supplies. When he got back, the camp was in ruins. Bodies lay dissipated across the ground, the leftovers of a merciless assault. When he realized what had occurred, his heart stopped. They were located by the Hyena. They had discovered that the refugees were residents of the city where the diamond had gone missing. They had stormed the camp, killed many, and taken hostages in their ruthless search for the priceless gem. Allison was among the captured. In a split second, Ryan's world fell apart. His peaceful life with Allison, everything he had built, was gone. Standing in the rubble, his mind was consumed with rage and grief, and his heart broke. He had bombed her. He had all fallen short. However, Ryan refused to give up this time. He refused to let the Hyena prevail. The man who had previously left the fight was no more. Now all that was left was a soldier who was determined to finish what he had begun, regardless of the cost. Ryan prepared for the final battle with nothing on the line. He'd locate Allison. He would get the diamond back. Additionally, he would demand compensation from the Hyena for each life they had taken. The mission was not even close to finished.
