Chapter 54 - Chapter 54: I remember now

Time felt as though it had come to a complete stop at that moment as my mind struggled to register the words that I had just heard and my brows were furrowed together to form a deep crease in my forehead.

To say I was confused was an understatement. What did she mean? My medical report? Why would he need my medical report? How did he get it without my consent? Millions of questions were swirling in my head like a hurricane and thoughts were buzzing in my mind endlessly.

"Hello?" The unfamiliar voice greeted me once again when I didn't say a word, jolting me back to reality in an instant.

"What?" I muttered under my breath, finally getting the word out of my throat.

The lady on the phone immediately apologised as soon as she heard my voice. "I'm so sorry!" I could hear her flustered voice, she must have thought that she messed up somehow. "I must have gotten the wrong number."

"No, you didn't," I quickly said and I could almost hear a sigh of relief. "I'm his wife."

There was a brief moment of silence that stretched between us as my grip on his phone tightened unknowingly and my lips were pursed into a thin line. The gears in my head were shifting as a thought popped into my head at that very second.

"Actually…" I began, my voice trailing off as my heart started thumping loudly against my chest and I was overwhelmed with feelings of anticipation and nervousness. "May I know why my husband requested my medical records?" I questioned.

The lady on the phone was about to say something, the words barely left the tip of her tongue when Xavier's deep voice reached my ears, startling me.

"What are you doing on my phone?"

In a moment of shock, I let go of his phone, dropping it as it fell to the ground with a loud thud. Almost immediately, I whipped my head around to find myself staring into his dark eyes from a small distance away.

"I… I…" I stuttered as there was a lump in my throat and I struggled to find the right words to say. "You got a call," I explained.

His eyes flickered down to his phone lying on the ground. His eyes flashed with a hint of recognition when he saw the number displayed on the brightly lit screen of his phone. In a hurry, he rushed over to pick up his phone and hung up on the lady without saying another word.

"What did you hear?" He questioned, his voice was firm yet emotions were running wild in his eyes. "What did they tell you?"

I looked up at him and we locked eyes. There was a brief moment of silence as I stared at him. "Why did you request my medical report?" I asked instead, a look of determination crossed my face for a fleeting moment. I stepped forward, closing the gap between us. "Why are you acting so weird and suspicious?" My voice was laced with accusation as I continued to hurl questions at him.

"Just tell me what's going on," I pleaded, desperation seeping through the words that left my lips. "Stop hiding things from me."

He sucked in a deep breath as if to brace himself for what he was about to say next. He knew he couldn't get away from it this time, and that he couldn't lie to me either as I could see right through his lies.

"The truth is… I knew you way before the day we met at the hospital. We were once engaged," he revealed finally.

His words were like a bomb, dropping into my world and shattering the reality that I was familiar with. It felt as though my world had collapsed overnight and my heart sank to the pit of my stomach within the next second. I couldn't believe my ears.

I stumbled back in shock, grabbing onto the edge of the table to steady myself before I looked up to meet his eyes again.

"What? Are you joking?"

He stepped forward trying to hold onto my hands. "I'm not joking, why would I joke about something like this?"

"I… I don't understand…" I stammered as I continued to be in denial, disbelief written all over my face as I stared at him with my heart racing inside of my chest. "How could that be? I don't know you… at all! How could I not know you or recognise you if we were once engaged? Why would I not recognise my own fiance?"

He grabbed onto my hands this time, holding me tightly and I felt like my head was spinning and my thoughts were scattered all over my mind, it was a huge mess.

"Aurelia…" my name left his lips in a soft voice as his features softened. "Did you not know? You have been suffering from amnesia ever since your accident."

I knew I suffered some memory loss but I didn't understand why would my mother hide this huge part of my life from me. His words were like a sudden splash of ice cold water being thrown right at me without a single warning. Some of the memories that were buried deep inside my mind, hiding away in the back came rushing back into my head this time at that very moment like some enlightenment.

The image of Xavier getting down on one knee in the mountains reappeared inside my head, the little moments where we hugged and kissed, laughing at one another on our dates all flooded my mind.

My eyes widened in shock and disbelief. Words couldn't describe exactly how I was feeling, I was overwhelmed by every single emotion that I could list.

I remember it all now.

A soft gasp escaped my lips as I looked up at him. Everything all seemed to make sense now.

The way he shook my shoulders in the hospital the first time, accusing me of leaving him alone 3 years ago. The way he knew my favourite flowers and foods even when I didn't remember telling him anything. He knew everything about me when he was just a stranger I was getting to know.

I pulled my hands out of his grasp and stepped back in shock. I averted my eyes, looking down at the ground as I muttered under my breath.

"I remember everything now…"
