Chapter 9 - Chapter 9: "The Challenge Accepted"

The day had progressed steadily after Leo's encounter with Chōka. The rest of the classes went by in a blur of lectures, sparring sessions, and note-taking. Leo kept his mind focused, but there was a constant hum of anticipation under the surface—he knew that his upcoming match with Chōka would be a defining moment in his early days here.

As the final bell rang, students began filing out of their classrooms, many heading towards the training hall. Word had spread quickly about Chōka's challenge to Leo, and the rumor mill was working overtime. By the time Leo, Nomura, and Masuko made their way to the hall, a small crowd had already gathered.

The training hall was a vast space, equipped with sparring mats, wooden dummies, and racks filled with various practice weapons. A high ceiling allowed plenty of room for aerial maneuvers, and the polished wooden floor reflected the overhead lights. The students who had gathered were chatting excitedly among themselves, eager to see what would happen next.

"I didn't think this many people would show up," Nomura remarked, scanning the crowd.

"Chōka's challenges are a big deal," Masuko explained. "She's one of the Five Supreme Swords. People want to see if you've got what it takes, Leo."

Leo nodded, a small smile forming on his lips. "Good. I like an audience."

Suddenly, a notification appeared before Leo's eyes.

Special Quest Unlocked: Challenge of the Blade Mistress

Objective: Win the duel against Chōka U. Baragasaki.

Reward: Increased interest from Chōka, "Blindfold of Perception" (an item that heightens the senses when worn).

Leo's eyes sharpened at the reward. The item seemed intriguing, and the increase in Chōka's interest could be valuable for the days to come. He rolled his shoulders, loosening his muscles as he prepared mentally for the fight ahead.

Chōka stood at the center of the hall, her arms crossed as she waited patiently. Her eyepatch and stern expression were both in place, exuding an air of authority and challenge. When she spotted Leo approaching, she nodded slightly, acknowledging his presence.

"Glad you showed up," Chōka said, her voice carrying through the hall. "I was worried you might be all talk."

Leo chuckled. "I've never been one to back down from a challenge."

Chōka's lips twitched into a small smile. "Good. I hate wasting my time."

Rin was among the crowd, watching the scene unfold with a sharp gaze. She leaned over to Mary, who stood beside her. "He's bold, I'll give him that. But does he really understand what he's getting into?"

Mary nodded, her eyes never leaving Leo. "He seems confident. But confidence isn't always enough."

As the crowd settled, Leo and Chōka stepped into the center of the training mat. A hush fell over the hall as everyone waited for the duel to begin.

Chōka took a firm stance, her hand resting on the hilt of her practice katana. "This won't be like your fight with Rin. I hope you're ready."

Leo mirrored her stance, his expression serious but calm. "I wouldn't want it to be."

Without further delay, Chōka dashed forward, her katana slicing through the air with precision. Leo sidestepped her initial strike, feeling the wind from her blade brush past his cheek. Chōka's movements were swift and calculated, each step flowing seamlessly into the next. She was testing his reflexes, probing his defenses for any weaknesses.

The crowd watched with bated breath. "She's fast," one student whispered. "Can he keep up?"

"He better," another replied. "Chōka doesn't hold back."

Leo decided to counter with a low sweep aimed at her legs, but Chōka anticipated his move and leaped into the air, twisting her body gracefully to avoid the attack. She landed softly, immediately launching into a flurry of quick, successive strikes. Leo found himself on the defensive, blocking and parrying as Chōka pressed the assault.

"Look at that footwork! She's barely giving him time to breathe!" a girl exclaimed, her eyes wide with excitement.

"Chōka's known for her relentless attacks. If he doesn't find an opening soon, he's done for," another boy added, nodding sagely.

Masuko clenched his fists, murmuring under his breath, "Come on, Leo… You've got this."

Leo quickly realized that Chōka's fighting style was a blend of speed and control. She never overcommitted to an attack, always leaving herself an out in case things went wrong. Deciding to change tactics, Leo feigned a stumble, making it appear as though he was off-balance.

Chōka's eyes flashed with a brief moment of overconfidence, and she lunged in, aiming for his exposed side. But it was a trap. Leo twisted his body at the last second, grabbing her outstretched arm and using her momentum to flip her over his shoulder. She landed on her feet, but her stance was momentarily broken.

The crowd gasped, and a murmur spread through them. "He turned it around!" someone shouted.

"Nice move!" Nomura cheered, his fists pumping in the air.

Chōka, however, wasn't fazed. She quickly regained her footing, a smirk appearing on her face. "Not bad. Looks like I underestimated you."

Leo grinned. "There's more where that came from."

The duel intensified as both fighters began to show their true capabilities. Chōka's strikes became even faster, her movements a blur to most of the spectators. Leo, however, was now fully in the zone. He could see the rhythm of her attacks, the subtle shifts in her stance that signaled her next move.

He countered a high strike with a spinning kick, aiming for her midsection, but Chōka blocked it with her katana, deflecting the force of the blow. She retaliated with a sweeping arc aimed at his legs, forcing him to jump back.

A few students in the crowd winced. "That would've been it if he hadn't dodged," one muttered.

The air was thick with tension as they continued to exchange blows, each one more intense than the last. Leo's breathing was steady, his focus unwavering. Chōka's eyes narrowed as she prepared for her final move.

She took a deep breath, shifting her stance slightly—a stance that was unfamiliar to most of the crowd but not to Leo. He recognized it as a preparation for a rapid thrust that could end the match in seconds.

Leo knew he had to act fast. As Chōka launched her thrust, he sidestepped with perfect timing, narrowly avoiding the strike. Using the momentum, he pivoted on his heel and landed a clean, precise strike with his fist right at her collarbone—enough to stun, but not injure.

Chōka staggered back, her eyes widening in surprise. She tried to recover, but Leo was already there, stopping just short of delivering a finishing blow.

The hall was silent for a moment, and then erupted in cheers and applause. The crowd had been on the edge of their seats, and now they were electrified by what they had just witnessed.

Chōka slowly lowered her katana, a small but genuine smile forming on her lips. "Well done, Leo. You've earned my respect today."

Leo bowed slightly, still catching his breath. "Thanks, Chōka. It was an honor."

As the crowd dispersed, Rin and Mary approached Leo. "You keep surprising us," Rin said, her eyes glinting with both curiosity and caution.

"Don't think this means you're off the hook," Mary added, though there was a hint of approval in her tone. "You've still got a long way to go."

Leo nodded, understanding the gravity of the journey ahead. "I wouldn't have it any other way."

Leo felt a sense of accomplishment. He had taken a significant step in establishing himself in this world, but he knew that many more challenges lay ahead. As he looked around at the academy and its students, he couldn't help but feel a surge of excitement for what was to come.

The adventure had only just begun.
