I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw the condition of the buildings. It looked as if all the buildings had been abandoned years ago and left to the wild. The walls of the house I bought today are filled with holes and most of the windows are nonexistent. The shingles on the roof were broken and falling off. I am surprised that there is a roof still attached to the building. I don't believe this can be called that is safe to live in, let alone stand beside. A gust of wind could blow it over at any time. I would much prefer my condo in the city. I can put up with this for a couple of days.
From Georgie's research, the house just to the right belongs to Cyber Star. The discussion was made that I would watch Miss Star until my real target came out of hiding. But right now, she is my only option. I had guessed the townspeople had rightly started talking about my arrival. I hope that the news of an outsider doesn't scare her or make her run off again. I took a look around this little town before walking inside my new house. Why the hell would she come out here?
A young local blond girl had come to speak to me as I was being walked through the house. She seemed to be close with the older gentleman who was showing me around. She was very chatty, asking a question just to talk over the answer. I thought for a moment that she might have been Cyber, but I learned that wasn't the case the second she opened her mouth. She had that her best friend was a computer genius who lived next door to this house. I let her go on and on and acted interested in the house.
I had James bring over some clothes and food the second I handed the older man the cash. I had asked him at the same time to find some builders to come to repair this house before it collapsed on me while I slept. Opening chow mein noodles and grabbing the wooden chopped sticks. I sat by the window that overlooked Cyber's kitchen window. I ate the saucy stir-fried noodles while casually glancing out the window. If anyone spotted me in the window all they would see was a man enjoying his dinner and the outdoors. My attention was drawn to the window seal as a tiny poofy-looking bird landed directly in my point of view. Its tiny white feathers coating its chest looked like they could have been soft fur. I admired the intricate designs of the black feathers surrounding its wings, head and tail feathers. I had never seen such a pretty little creature before. I remembered the birds that used to rest outside my condo in the city. They extended to fat, greedy crows and thick-headed pigeons. None of which were pleasant to look at in the morning.
I almost didn't notice a woman staring at me through the window. I looked up from the little bird to get a better look at her. She was washing a cup in the sink as she watched me. Her light skin seemed to glow from the light of the setting sun. She flicked her light brown hair over her shoulder as she lifted her soapy hands from the sink, pulling a towel from somewhere below the counter before walking away. I caught a glimpse of her hips swaying as she disappeared from my sight.
When I looked back at the window seal, I was slightly disappointed to find the little bird had flown away. I shook my head slightly and stood from where I was perched on the edge of the counter. A light knock sounded on my front door. It echoed through the house like far-away gunfire. I squared my shoulders and marched to the door with an unimpressed expression fixed on my face. I twisted the knob carefully and swung the door open. I almost lost my composure when I saw the young woman from the window standing at my door. Her long hair was done up in a messy bun. I looked her up and down as she stood in silence with her arms crossed. She rolled her eyes before dropping her arms to her sides.
"Usually, the person who answers the door says hello." She said. Her body language matched mine in almost every way.
"Hello," was the only response I could give her.
My eyes were locked on her face. I examined her soft skin and strong bone structure, but my eyes locked on hers. Her gaze was examining me as well. I tried to inspect the colour of her eyes, but I was standing too far away. They were brown, a dark brown; almost like mud, but I could see a hint of something else subtly flickering behind the dark brown. I wanted to step closer, to look deeper. I stopped myself from even thinking about that before I could act on it. My gaze betrayed me as it slid over her lips, and she let out a muffled sigh.
"I'm Cyber, your neighbour." She said like it was the most obvious thing in the world.
"It's nice to meet you, Cyber; I'm Cliff," I said while forming a half grin.
"I just wanted to come over and introduce myself... also it was a chickadee." She said and my grin faded.
"Chickadee?" I asked while running my hand through my hair.
A smile formed on her plump cherry pink lips and I couldn't help but suppress the urge to capture her mouth with mine. She let out a laugh that sounded like music on the wind and it took everything in me not to react to her. I shallowed but kept my face and body natural. What the fuck is this girl doing to me? I have never wanted someone like this before. The second I saw her in the window I couldn't take my eyes off her. A fire lit in my chest, and fire spread throughout my body. When she stopped laughing she looked up at me with a slight joy behind her eyes.
"A chickadee is the bird you were so enchanted by earlier." She used quotations with her fingers as she said enchanted.
I only raised an eyebrow at her before she went to turn away. I opened my mouth to speak. To say anything that could get her to stay just a little longer. No sound came out of my throat as she took a spet down the path and turned abruptly to face me again. A long moment passed as she considered something.
"Do you know a guy named Josh?" She asked finally with a shrug of her shoulders.
Her words sounded bored and uninterested, how ever her whole body tensed and she looked prepared to run if needed. My hand gripped the door tighter, an action that didn't go unnoticed. I refuse to allow the body to move any more than that. I didn't want to scare her... I didn't want her to run.
"No... I don't know him, I don't work for anyone either... I am looking for someone that goes by the name Josh." I said in a cool tone.
I was worried I said too much, that she would run and I would lose her. Stupid. You can't lose someone you've never had or even really know. I pushed those feelings down into a box in my brain before locking the box. To my surprise, she didn't move. Only nodded her head in acknowledgment before turning and walking away. I stood by the door, taking a single step out the door to watch her as she strolled back to her house. I stood there until she was inside her house with the door closed before I shut my door.
Pulling my phone out of my pocket I flicked it on and looked at the time. 11:45 p.m. I opened the lock screen and sent a quick text to James before heading to bed myself.
"I found her... She is something different, have Georgie do some more research on Josh. I want to know everything we can get on him. Keep you updated.
