As soon as she heard the voice, Cherry's heart skipped a beat. She froze mid-motion, letting the cloth slip from her hands as she turned to face the source of the voice. There stood the masked man next to the light switch and she realized that she wasn't as alone as she thought.
"What are you doing in here?" he asked, crossing his arms, his voice steady and probing.
"The same reason you're here!" Cherry shot back, trying to sound clever.
She had seen this kind of banter in movies before and figured it might work for her now.
But the masked man's knowing smirk clearly unfazed by her bravado suggested he was one step ahead.
"I was sent to retrieve something by the boss! But instead, I find a woman wandering in here without permission," he said, stepping closer, with a sharp gaze.
"I knocked! I knocked for… permission!" Cherry stuttered, desperately trying to defend herself.
