Chereads / Dust of the Shattered Realms / Chapter 38 - XXXVIII

Chapter 38 - XXXVIII

Alex slowly opens his eyes after taking a brutal hit. He draws a deep breath, staring into the void for a moment before locking his gaze directly onto you.

"So..." he begins, wiping blood from the corner of his mouth with a mocking grin. "You seem a little confused, huh? Yeah, I get it. You're probably wondering who this lunatic I'm up against is. And why the hell she's this violent?"

He steps back, pacing slowly like he's giving a lecture. "Oh, let me guess… You're also curious about her weird obsession with revenge, right? And maybe, just maybe, you're asking yourself: 'Why is she a bit… off?' Be honest, who talks about 'payback' like it's a love language unless they've got some serious issues?"

Raising an eyebrow and pointing at you as if he's hit on a genius idea, he continues, "But hey, let's be real here… Who in their right mind picks a fight with someone who can summon lightning? I mean, come on, that's not fair, is it? It's like life decided to say: 'Hey Alex, you beat her brother, but now you get to face a budget version of the god of thunder!'"

He suddenly freezes, staring at the ground as though he's just uncovered a profound truth. Then, his eyes snap back to you. "But the real question is… who the hell is this clown named 'Momo'?... Oh, sorry, I mean Matthew." With an exaggerated sigh, he raises his eyebrows dramatically. "God, Momo? Really? What kind of guy goes by Momo? That's not a name—it's the kind of nickname you'd expect from someone… let's just say, working in a questionable part of town." He smirks and winks mischievously.

Taking a deep breath, he rubs his temples with his fingers as if trying to sort through an overly complicated puzzle. "You know, the name alone makes you wonder. Like the person who came up with it wanted to scream, 'I'm here to ruin your life… but in the most awkward, twisted way possible.' I just hope no one shows up claiming they have a cat named Momo, because I do 'not' have the energy to deal with that today."

He pauses, throwing up his hands in frustration and gesturing to the air. "Anyway, back to this lunatic, Alexandra, who's hellbent on making me pay for what I did to her dear little brother… yeah, Matthew, the infamous Momo." He chuckles darkly, clutching his chest like he's mimicking heartbreak.

Taking a step closer to you, he folds his arms and leans in, his tone quieter but dripping with sarcasm. "You know what? I won't lie to you, dear reader, this whole situation is absolute nonsense. Between us, sometimes it feels like I'm stuck in a third-rate sitcom… just when I think things can't possibly get worse, boom! Momo's sister shows up!"

With another sly wink, he gestures to the space beside him like he's pointing to an invisible person. "But let's agree on one thing… no matter what happens, don't let anyone know I said anything remotely nice about Momo—or Matthew—or whatever his name is. The last thing I need is for this loser to become someone's hero."

Alex shakes his head, laughing bitterly, before fixing you with a skeptical look.

"Remember, dear reader, back in chapter six, that gorgeous professor Emily… Oh, don't tell me you forgot her?!"

He leans in slightly, whispering like it's a big secret. "Yeah, the ice queen. The one who could control ice like it was her personal weapon for freezing my emotions to death… Damn, she's stunning, though."

Placing a hand on his forehead like he's trying to recall something important, he begins pacing back and forth. "Anyway, that ice queen set us up for a 'friendly match' against another university division. And lucky me, I got paired up against that weirdo… Momo—I mean, Matthew."

With a bitter smile, he nods toward you. "Imagine this: I'm in a fight with a guy yelling at me like I don't deserve to breathe, as if he's some enraged gamer kid trash-talking online. But things took a turn when he started bringing up my dead parents."

Alex freezes mid-step, glaring at you with a mix of disbelief and outrage before shouting, "Dude, he insulted my dead parents! What the actual hell? Who does that?!"

Clutching his chest dramatically, he lets out a bitter laugh. "It completely broke me. So yeah, I kicked his sorry ass. Made him regret every damn word he said."

Shaking his head, he mutters, "And what was my reward? Four days of suspension. Four freakin' days! Like the university was saying, 'Alex, take a break because you had the audacity to knock out that prick.'"

He leans in close again, his expression a mix of seriousness and mockery. "Now, if you think you've got bad luck, just look at me. Somehow, thanks to this crap script our dear author cooked up, I'm stuck in this mess."

He points toward Alexandra, standing in the ring, her gaze burning with hatred and vengeance.

"Yup, Matthew's sister. The psycho. Oh, and of course, she's the professor who's supposed to evaluate my performance as a rookie hunter. It's like the universe is playing a cruel joke on me."

Alex tilted his head theatrically, stepping back and placing his hands on his hips.

"You know, sometimes I really feel like I'm trapped in a bad sitcom!"

He burst into hysterical laughter before turning to you with a broad grin and a playful wink.

"Now, dear reader, if you think you're having a rough day, just remember me! Here I am, stuck in the worst possible scenarios, and thanks to this sadistic author... well, it looks like I'll be stuck here for a long, long time."

Alex raised his gaze to the sky, gesturing dramatically as if addressing the author directly.

"Oh, and you, dear author… if you're enjoying this—screw you! Were you seriously trying to make my life worse? Because congratulations, buddy, you nailed it!"

Standing still for a moment, hands on his thighs as if bracing himself, he shot another sarcastic smile your way.

"So, wanna place bets on what's next? 'Cause I'm seriously thinking of drafting my will."

He mock-wiped sweat from his forehead, winked again, and slowly turned back toward Alexandra.

"Alright, dear reader, buckle up. You're about to witness some drama and a whole lot of lightning!"

As Alex wrapped up his sarcastic monologue, dancing between biting commentary and breaking the fourth wall, a sudden surge of energy shot toward him. There was no time to think—just a blinding flash—and before he could process what was happening, he was hurled violently into the wall by an electrifying strike from Alexandra. His body trembled uncontrollably as the lightning coursed through him, his breath coming in sharp, ragged gasps.

Alexandra, her face twisted with wild determination, spoke with a voice brimming with fury.

"You think this is all just a joke, don't you? That I'll stand here and let you mock me and my family?"

Alex groaned, struggling to his feet, his side burning from the impact of the attack. He raised his hands defensively, trying to defuse the situation with words.

"Alexandra... listen, I didn't mean any harm. Let's talk this out, alright? Maybe… rethink this whole revenge thing?"

But Alexandra wasn't listening—or maybe she simply didn't care. Her eyes blazed with rage, electricity crackling around her fingers like a predator ready to pounce.

"i'm your f***ing professor don't call me by name you bastard !! ,your words mean nothing to me now! You'll pay for what you've done, Alex. Here and now!" she shouted.

Alex realized, then and there, that negotiation was off the table. He had no choice but to take the fight seriously. Hesitating for just a moment, he activated his trump card: that ridiculous, unpredictable tattoo of his. A faint pulse throbbed through his forearm as the glowing symbols on his skin began to light up.

"Alright," he muttered under his breath. "Let's see if luck's on my side this time."

Every move he made felt like a gamble. He darted forward, blade in hand, aiming for a clean strike. But Alexandra was fast—faster than he anticipated. With effortless precision, she dodged his attack and retaliated with another jolt of lightning.

"Is that the best you've got?!" she taunted, spinning gracefully as another wave of electricity surged toward him.

Once again, Alex barely managed to dodge, the bolt sizzling through the air just inches from his face. He panted heavily, sweat dripping from his brow. "Damn it... luck won't hold out forever. I need a plan."

But outsmarting her wasn't going to be easy. Each time he struck, she evaded. Her movements were sharp, confident, and relentless—like a predator playing with its prey.

"What's the matter? Running out of tricks already?" she sneered, her voice laced with reckless glee as she charged up another attack.

Alex knew he had to think smarter, not harder. This wasn't just a fight of strength—it was about timing. He studied her closely, waiting for the perfect opening. And then, in a fleeting moment, as she moved to unleash yet another strike, Alex made a desperate gamble.

"Alright, you reckless maniac..." he whispered to himself with a crooked grin. "Let's see if luck is still got my back."

Taking cover behind a massive boulder, Alex analyzed his surroundings, his mind racing. He felt the raw energy of her lightning searing the air. Every failed attempt to get closer left him more drained, his muscles trembling from the residual electricity.

"Direct combat isn't an option... I've got to outthink her."

Scanning the battlefield, he noticed how the bolts arced toward the ground, drawn to the quickest conductive path. His gaze darted between the jagged rocks scattered around, calculating distances.

"If these rocks are conductive, maybe I can redirect the lightning… turn her own power against her."

Grimacing, Alex repositioned himself, using the terrain to create barriers between him and her strikes. He knew his margin for error was razor-thin. One misstep, and he'd be toast—literally.

As Alexandra closed in, her steps confident and her eyes blazing, Alex whispered under his breath.

"C'mon, lady luck... don't fail me now."

When Alexandra raised her hand to release a lightning bolt, Alex had already calculated the time it would take for the lightning to reach the ground. "The speed of lightning is known. I have to move within a fraction of a second." He dashed toward a group of rocks, the lightning striking the air near him, but he retreated behind one of the large rocks at the last moment.

While hiding, Alex made some quick calculations: "If she relies on concentration to release her lightning, each attack will require time. If I move quickly between insulated points, some of her strikes will miss."

With every step, he used the terrain to his advantage, trying to leverage angles and cracks to deflect the lightning away from himself. Large rocks shattered under the force of the bolts, but Alex used this time to recalculate each move. "The distance between the rock and my hiding spot is greater than it seems... This will buy me a few extra moments."

When he noticed a large, tilted boulder at the top of the hill, an idea struck him: "If I can get Alexandra to release a bolt at that boulder, I might be able to make it roll." He decided to act on this hypothesis quickly.

He revealed himself for a moment, shouting: "Come on, hit me!" As he expected, Alexandra immediately fired a lightning bolt, hitting the tilted boulder and causing it to roll toward her.

Alexandra was startled by the massive boulder hurtling toward her, forcing her to step back slightly. "It worked." Alex thought as he watched the boulder roll. He didn't expect it to hit her, but he managed to distract her for a few moments—exactly what he needed.

While Alexandra avoided the boulder, Alex used the time to reevaluate the situation. "I can't keep this up forever... but it's enough for now to stay alive."

The hill shook under the impact of the lightning, and the giant boulder swayed slowly before losing balance completely. It began rolling down toward Alexandra. Alex watched from afar, hoping that her focus on the boulder would distract her enough.

As the massive boulder tumbled violently down the hill, it sent up a huge cloud of dust and debris into the air. The ground cracked under the weight of the boulder, scattering fragments of stone in every direction. Alex observed from his spot behind the rocks, realizing that the next moment could be decisive. "This chaos will work in my favor... but I have to act quickly."

Alexandra, though surprised by the rolling boulder, didn't lose her composure. She quickly raised her hand and surrounded herself with a glowing network of lightning, forming an electric barrier around her body. The flying debris and shards disintegrated upon hitting the barrier, reduced to ash by the immense energy. From behind the thick cloud of dust, her eyes still glowed with anger and focus.

"Alright, she's fully protected now... but the lightning surrounding her requires continuous energy. I can exploit that." Alex murmured to himself. "If she gets distracted or uses up her energy maintaining the barrier, I'll get the chance I need."

Taking advantage of the chaos from the rolling boulder and the dust filling the battlefield, Alex prepared for his next move.

As the dust covered the battlefield, Alex smiled faintly, glancing at the tattoo glowing softly on his arm. "The Inheritance Transfer ability..." he whispered to himself.

The tattoo on his forearm glowed brighter and brighter. Through it, he summoned the lightning ability he had copied from Matthew, Alexandra's brother, during their previous encounter. He knew he only had thirty seconds to use this ability, so he had to move fast and smart.

With the battlefield shrouded in dust and Alexandra's lightning barrier acting as an impenetrable shield, Alex came up with a plan.

"Alright, let's use this chaos."

He began channeling the lightning energy into his hands, attempting to mimic Alexandra's technique as closely as possible. He wanted his attack to look like an extension of her own power. At the perfect moment, he leapt out of his hiding spot in the dust.

While Alexandra's lightning swirled around her like a massive energy shield, Alex discreetly used his ability, blending his strikes with hers to remain unnoticed. The clock was ticking—he had just thirty seconds to make his attack appear as part of the electrical storm she had created.

He released a bolt of lightning with speed and precision, aiming it at her barrier in a way that made it look like her energy had spiraled out of control. The result was a chaotic mix of overlapping lightning bolts, creating flashes of unstable energy.

"What is this?!" Alexandra shouted angrily, looking around. For a moment, it seemed as though she had lost control of her powers. Confusion spread across her face as the lightning around her began scattering unpredictably.

"Am I losing control?!" she muttered in frustration, trying to regain her grip on her abilities. She believed the instability was caused by her aggressive attacks on Alex.

All Alex could do was watch her carefully, working to keep his ability hidden within the electrical chaos.

As she regained her composure and began gathering her energy again, Alex knew it was time to retreat. He had achieved his goal—distracting her long enough to buy himself some time. In the final seconds before his ability expired, he released one last small lightning bolt toward a nearby rock, adding to the scene's chaos.

"Damn it!" Alexandra cursed, her frustration boiling over. She remained unaware that Alex had been using her brother's power. To her, it was nothing more than a brief lapse in her control caused by anger and pressure.

When the thirty seconds were up, Alex quietly slipped back behind the rocks, making sure to keep the truth hidden. He had succeeded—Alexandra hadn't discovered anything. For her, it was just a fleeting moment of lost control.

To be continued…
