"No time to explain," he said curtly, but with growing urgency in his voice. "I've got a new ability. We can get past the guards. But we need to move quickly."
Elena's eyes had widened, but she said nothing more, took his word for it, as she had said earlier.
"Then let's do this," she said, determination alighting in her eyes.
Then he turned and walked back to the rest-a group of all exhausted, desperate people who had pinned all their hopes on Alex's insane scheme. They listened, faces keen with tense expectation, while Alex outlined the situation as he knew it in quick, clear tones. The tension was palpable, while there was a flicker of hope in their eyes.
"We move in ten minutes," Alex said. His voice was flat, even. "Stick close to me, and no noise whatsoever. Clear of the guards, head for the western gate. Elena handles the lookout."
"This is it," Elena whispered, her voice tight with anticipation. "No turning back now."
