Chereads / The Curse of Time (Harry Potter Fanfic) / Chapter 37 - Mirror of Erised

Chapter 37 - Mirror of Erised

The holidays had begun, and the school was quiet. I amused myself by walking around the halls, taking advantage of the fact that there were hardly any students in the corridors.

Marie walked beside me, eating a cupcake she had taken from the kitchen.

As we passed through the corridor leading to the library, we noticed a door slightly ajar.

Curious as to why it was open, since most doors were usually closed, we decided to investigate.

Upon opening the door, we saw a mirror in the middle of the room.

I was intrigued and approached it. I could see words inscribed at the top of the mirror.

"Mirror of Erised."

Below what seemed to be the name of the mirror, there was another inscription:

"Erised stra ehru oyt ube cafru oyt on wohsi."

Thinking about it for a moment, I realized that it was written backwards.

"I show not your face but your heart's desire."

Curious about the meaning of the words, I looked into the mirror and saw myself with my brother and parents, living peacefully.

I could see that the reflection of myself in the mirror was unaffected by the curse of time.

I don't know how long I stood in front of the mirror, but I watched myself grow normally, free from the curse.

"Evelyn, come back to us."

When I snapped back to reality after hearing Mary's voice, I realized tears were streaming down my face.

"Are you all right, Evelyn?"

She looked at me with concern.

"I'm fine. I just saw my deepest desire and seemed to have lost track of time."

Mary pushed me aside to take a look at her own deepest desire in the mirror, and drops fell from her face—but it wasn't tears. It was blood running from her nose.

"Stop being such a clown. Knowing you, you probably saw something erotic with me."

"Hehehe."

I couldn't take it any longer. I grabbed her and dragged her out of the room, ignoring her protests.

Pov General,

The room where the Mirror of Erised stood was silent until a light appeared. Once it faded, a mysterious person accompanied by a maid appeared, with the number "0" engraved in their eyes.

"I have an idea of what my deepest desire is, but I want to see it anyway."

The mysterious person stood in front of the mirror and gazed into it.

"Madam, you shouldn't do that. We know you'll suffer from looking at it."

"It's been an eternity since that event took place. I have no more tears to shed over it."

"Don't say that. You know as well as I do that the past can't be changed, and it's not your fault they died."

What she saw was herself making the choice she should have made to prevent the incident from happening.

This incident had completely destroyed her life and morale.

"Killing that person would have been pointless; they would have died anyway, one way or another."

"Yes, but it wouldn't have been my fault. I wouldn't carry this overwhelming guilt that has haunted me since birth. I knew I was going to kill them, but I let it happen."

"Your premonition was too vague to know how you 'killed' them. You are inflicting a curse on yourself that would make you suffer to save them, but it did not work. Stop dwelling on it and look around you. This incident may have been one of the most macabre, but it shaped you into who you are today."

"A person who has caused the genocide of billions."

"Maybe, but you never abandoned your people, and you helped so many who were suffering. Now, come with me."

The mysterious person took the hand the maid offered and left the room with her.
