Chereads / The Synchrony Paradox / Chapter 10 - Overcast

Chapter 10 - Overcast

"Impossible!" Adele shivered like a battering leaf in a thunderstorm, as he stepped back with an apparent horror evident on his face. He could not bring himself to think about the picture painted by Cray's description about his Uncle's death. But more than that he was shook by the sudden recollection of his Uncle's smiling face, that watched the burning of him and Uncle Max with a sadistic grin on his face.

What was the truth? What was a lie? Did uncle really die or this Vampire is telling an obvious lie since Adele himself had seen his uncle… But was that really his uncle?

While Adele was confounded by the horrors sprouted alive by his personal experience. Unfortunately to him, no one else was interested in his jumbled processing of the loss of his Uncle. Cray looked least affected owing to his non-empathetic nature. He after one glance at struggling Adele, quickly turned back to face Night watchers, likely wanting them to take Adele in. On the other hand, Night watchers paid more attention to the Bloodsucker than the struggling human who appeared to be devastated after his loved one's death. In their perspective, it was a sad but common part and parcel of their work.

Until…

"I saw him…I definitely...saw him"

Suddenly it dawned on Adele while he was repeating the sentence barely audible to himself. He abruptly remembered his Aunt's warning that at that time made the least sense to him but now struck home, that his Uncle was no longer himself. He was likely possesed? But possession…..

Adele held his head between his hands as he felt a painful throbbing inside his brain, the effect of his emotions tormenting his sanity that was putting his mental health under major duress.

Adele knew that the more he kept it to himself the more it would eat him further. He needs answers. And for that answer, he needs help from everyone…or anyone. Realizing that he quickly looked up and quickly screamed out,

"I saw him." Without waiting to see if anyone was even listening to him or not, he continued to yell, "Uncle David! I saw him alive just a few hours ago. That fire in which I was caught… He started it. "

Cray frowned his brows as he considered Adele with an apparent suspicion on his face, clearly not believing a word he said. Infact, it was the lead of Night watchers team who looked at him seriously and asked,

"I got the information about the fire, one of the Umbra died there. So you are saying it was started by your Uncle who is also Umbra but this monster here says that he had already died last night. Hmm… interesting!

Kid you are also connected to Umbra this means. Can you tell me everything you know from start to end? It might help us to figure out what is going wrong with Umbra too, as they closed and isolated themselves rather suddenly. We were actually en-route to investigate the latter situation. "

Adele swallowed dryly as he recalled his unfortunate day and honestly recounted everything, not only from this morning but also from yesterday. He started with their accidental run-in with a feral werewolf and then his own escape owing to his uncle and then quite certain news from his Aunt about his uncle taken to the Umbra for healing and then everything that went wrong from there which he got to know in bits and pieces from the Professor and dying Max.

Several times through his recounting, Cray wanted to interject saying that it was none of his matter and he should leave. But when he heard about werewolves being involved, he curbed his insecurity of standing surrounded by the Mad-men of faith and listened to everything until the end to collect the information for his family.

"He is telling the truth. Or you can say that… at least he is not lying." Just as Adele finished his words, one of the Night watchers raised his hand to kiss a silver chain in his hand in a devout manner as he announced the result he got from his artifact.

The leader of the Night watcher team looked back and frowned. Clearly he hadn't thought that it would be this strange. Though he had agreed to hear his words, he hadn't expected anything to be gleaned from his experience. Clearly, how could a young man with barely no presence could be the focal point of everything that has happened so far.

He was especially skeptical of the warning sent by his Aunt, and if he was guessing right she is a very famous investigator of the past therefore her credibility is too strong to be dismissed easily. It was like…..

"Did this Parasite's words also hold Truth?"

He pointed rudely to the still thinking Cray who nearly let his anger take over himself and attacked, for this insult but ultimately held back. While at the same time mentally commanding his thralls to stop from taking a sudden ambush on the Night watchers. He didn't want to fight if he could help it, at least for when he was on the weaker side.

Though his logic seemed strange, it was the reality. Humans hold peace when they are certain that they are the stronger side while monsters hold peace when they are certain they are the weaker side. Irony was that both sides understood this instinctive nature of their kind but still maintained a facade of control, that's why radicals like Nightwatchers were the majority in the Supernatural world.

"I can't ascertain his words. He is wearing some kind of wretched thing on his body to block my artifact's perception."

Quickly realizing that the situation could very well deteriorate now, Cray subtly signed his thralls to get closer to Adele. It was to be able to take him hostage if anything goes wrong. But from above he displayed a nonchalant attitude,

"This wretched thing…Is a fang from my ancestor. It is more of a proud legacy than a protective tool that we Vampire use. We vampires… "

"Throw it away." Cray was taken aback by the sudden growl of the middle aged man who slowly began to walk towards him. Cray was caught off guard but still showed a defiant expression to buy some more time,

"Excuse me! Are you insisting… "

"I SAID THROW IT AWAY!

We will not touch you if you comply with our orders. We just want to see if you are telling the truth about this business deal you were speaking off. Don't resist. Throw it away… NOWO!"

While he was saying those words, The Nightwatcher continued to walk forward steadily closing the distance between Cray and himself. There was halo light beginning to shimmer around his black overcoat forming a contrast, like a rapidly compressing power waiting to be unleashed the moment Cray defied his orders again.

Cray was seriously regretting not leaving earlier. Though he expected these mad men to pounce upon him given any weakness but he was still inexperienced to the real extent these men abhor their kind. Now he has no choice but to fight his way out, if he wants to leave from here alive. As for complying with his orders….Excuse me, Are you kidding me? How could he bend his neck in front of these fools?

The Night watcher knew that too. Vampires were proud monsters or atleast think themselves as one and this one, who so blatantly was boasting of his caricature of Family from start was most likely to fight when pressured than submit, which is fine by him. In fact he was hoping for it, as that would give him an excuse to wipe this 'still not mature monster' away without any guilt or breaking of any Accord.

Adele could feel the thick tension in the area. Minutes before, he would have objected in the support of Cray but now knowing that his uncle paid for his safety with his 'heart'. Adele knew it was hypocritical but still felt anger towards them(vampires) all the same.

But abruptly without any warning, at this moment he felt something and in response his heart skipped a beat. A thick blanket of fear took hold of him, vaguely familiar and something began to stir inside him as he looked up.

To his shock, he felt a visible disturbance happening in the night sky. The dark sky folded and twisted like a horror apparition, matching along his gut too twisted in tandem making him break in cold sweat.

Adele quickly looked around but was more shocked to see none of the others, neither Night watchers or Cray who was now openly snarling in anger, sensed anything wrong.

Just before the fight could break, he hurriedly shouted a warning.

"Wait, It is…"

The Nightwatcher leader didn't stop. His footsteps continued without change in beat but he felt a little disappointment as he thought the kid should have realized by now that his kindness was unfounded but a mockery in the eyes of these monsters. Though he wanted to outright ignore him, but still replied back, yelling angrily to cut off his scream,

"Enough. I don't care…"

At this moment, he felt it. Goosebumps arose on his body, and a feeling of unimaginable danger that he hadn't felt in long long years enveloped him in an instant. The bright light around his body snuffed out like a weak candle wick in the storm.

He felt it before he saw it. As something crumbled in the sky above their heads. Not just him, everyone at this moment felt like a vast shadow of fear and despair had taken over them at the same moment, instantly freezing everyone in their place.

Thralls stopped and trembled onto their knees just before they could pounce upon the horrified Adele. A few Nightwatchers found their light extinguished at the same time, which they had aimed at the thralls knowing that they were going to try to take the human kid as hostage.

Everyone no matter where in the whole city, felt something oppressive descending down from the above, breaking the invisible sky like a shattering glass but without even a peep of sound and shadow even darker than anything seen before covered the whole city into its rein immediately.

Everyone frozen looked upwards with terror in their eyes and at the very next moment…

The sky fell!
