I felt a feeling of relief wash over me as I left the house, and I decided to go over to my parents place.
I got into the car and as I drove through the city streets, the afternoon sun streaming through the windshield, I couldn't help but feel a mix of emotions. It had been days since I'd last seen May, our little girl. She was staying with my parents to keep her away from the chaos that had become our life. Now that Laura was safe and slowly coming around, I finally felt like I could breathe enough to check in on her.
Knowing May well, she would want me to get her something. I stopped by an ice cream shop to grab May's favorite. She always lit up the few times I bought her treats, and I was desperate to see that smile again.
The shop was a quaint little place tucked between two boutique stores, with pastel walls and a chalkboard menu displaying all the flavors in swirling handwriting.
