Chapter 2 - Conversation with A1.

[Geno structure findings, related Complete, but fragment of both doctors merging genes. Analyzing… welcome Ethan.]

"What the hel—"

Just as Ethan was about to say something else, the wall began trembling. At the exact middle a crack materialized, but it wasn't just any old crack; no, instead of those typical cracks you see in walls or what have you this appeared more like one line–as if there used to be two doors put together and now they were being pulled apart revealing some doorway into who knows where.

"What the hell just happened, and why is there a fucking tunnel in my house??!! Fear spread through Ethan, he looked at the opening before him. His mind was filled with what kind of terrible punishment he would receive from his parents for potentially the biggest disruption to their basement.

[Welcome Ethan, Son To Rosaline & Max Carter. You can enter the genetics lab.]

"Who the hell said that?! Ethan exclaimed turning all around, looking for the voice but no one was to be found.

Ethan looked at the golden piece inlaid into the wall as it shone gold. It looked like some kind of a gold motherboard stuck to the ground.

"Are you the one who was analyzing my Geno class a few moments ago? The golden motherboard… The curiosity peaked. he queried

[That is correct. My name is A1, the Carter family's artificial intelligence]

"Don't you mean AI?" Lightly touching the motherboard-like object, Ethan questioned.

[No! I mean A1, my name is A1 and I am an artifical intelligence. I am the Carter family's personal A.I. ]

Self-synced with what his parents had done, Ethan was awe-struck — marveling at the talking motherboard. Yet he was possessed with a single urgent question.

"Where does that opening in the wall lead, A1? he said looking at his best friend and then back to the dark hallway that appeared in the basement out of nowhere.

[It takes you to the abandoned secret genetic lab of your parents.]

"A secret genetic lab? They built a lab at home? What the heck!" When Ethan found out, he was at a loss as to how to feel other than angry. If his parents could only pause in their daily routine to consider him; he would have probably had a much better life. why couldn't they just leave their work for a minute!

It was so infuriating to even realize that their work was more important than their one and only son.

I can't believe their fucking job followed me here, even to the basement!!

The more he thought about his parents balancing their work and life so well, the more it made him angry that they were gracing in career while he was stuck at home. A/N: I'm not sure what he's pissed about; his parents let him run free — sign me up for that!

"Why did you call it an abandoned one A1?" Knowing that an "abandoned secret home lab" had been mentioned by A1, Ethan followed up.

[I marked it as abandoned because your parents decided this section of the house was now unused after one particularly disastrous experiment, and then I went offline.]

A hundred questions ran through Ethan mind:

– What was the failed experiment? that they immediately abandoned it?

-What were his parents concealing?

- Why was A1 switched off?

- Who would turn something as awesome A1 off?

As inconsequential as the last one had been, it stayed with him.

"Hey A1, can you explain to me how the failed experiment went?" His expression was filled with curiosity as Ethan asked.

[That piece of information has been purged from my memory. I no longer have any records of the incidents of the genetic lab]

Why did they erase your memory? A new question began to form in Ethan's mouth.

[I do not know. But you may ask the doctors-your parents]

"Is that the only option?". And he sighed, loath to have been in the dark about what exactly took place inside that lab. He would just never be able to have the face-to-face with his parents about it.

"You called it a genetic lab, A1. So a bit of their labour was done here, is that correct?" Ethan tried to understand what was more important than their child.

[Yes! This used to be your parents lab. That also means that some of their work logbooks and biographical videos might still be in there.]

"Well, in that case maybe I can finally find out what they actually do with their time in that lab. They cannot be just into genetic fusion — No, it has to he more than that." It pleased Ethan to think of a secret being revealed, even if it was his own neglectful parents.

He knew that his parents' work did not end at genetic fusion and other tests, they must think about this deeply. He had read countless studies on genetic fusion, and he knew that others in his field were able to hold high-profile careers while still having families. Others might not mount for much time with their children; but it was definitely more than the time his parents spent with him.

" A1, is there anything I should be cautious about in there?"

.

[I am unsure.]

"What!" Ethan exclaimed, incredulous. How did the AI not know if there was anything dangerous inside? It was supposed to know, since it's connected to it.

"Is there no method to do a search for threats in there? Like a security function?" he pressed on. He didn't really feel like it was going to be alright if he died in there.

[I am unable to recall,so please be careful.]

Knowing he was without a choice, Ethan sighed heavily as he looked towards the dark abyss that lay ahead of him, where both the walkway leading to his parents' hidden away laboratory could be found.

His heart pounding he braced himself, as he immediately put his guard up, in case of any danger (T/N: not like he was even strong enough to really protect himself.)

This would be his chance to see what his parents had truly been doing here all this time

It was time to unlock the mysteries they had kept hidden.
