Chapter 8 - Existence in Emptiness Chapter: 03

Sorry guys I'm sick that's why the releases are late. Since I'm feeling a lot better, I'll try to release as many chapters as I can.

.................................

I tried to hide my teary eyes and said in a trembling voice, "Why are you here again?"

Tiyas tried to open the door with one hand and said, "Preely, please let me in. I have a lot to say!"

"Please don't disturb me, Tiyas. Where your entire existence has vanished, I'll never try to start anything new."

"But I never told you to disappear like this! You left me floating in emptiness."

I removed my hand from the door and said, "You didn't say anything, but you said a lot! Was I not good enough? Why do you want me now, before I'm worthy? You didn't tell me to go away that day, but you let me fly like a kite, cutting the string. How could you think that kite would ever return to you with the string? It won't, Tiyas. And even if you find it, it will be torn to pieces! Go away."

Tiyas stood outside the door, thinking for a moment. He looked back and saw my father approaching and then leaving. He mumbled, "Do you remember Saad and Nujahat?"

"How could I forget Saad and Nujahat? I spent two whole years with Nujahat."

Tiyas sighed and said, "And Preely..."

I didn't give Tiyas a chance to say anything else and closed the door.

As I was closing it, I saw my parents, Tiyas' mother, and my grandfather coming towards me. As soon as I closed the door, I heard my mother say from outside, "Lia didn't let you in? Did she slam the door in your face. This girl has gotten too arrogant because of her father. How dare she behave this way with a guest? Lia's father, it's all your fault. You have made her so arrogant. You haven't even taught her how to behave with guests."

Tiyas said humbly, "I don't mind, aunty. I deserved it."

Though Tiyas' response was humble, his mother said sternly, "Please, Tiyas. Let's go. You don't understand, Lia won't accept you. Don't embarrass me anymore. Please let's go."

Tiyas replied, "Mom, I won't involve you in this anymore. Let's go, but Prii, listen... I'll come back." (He said this loudly for me to hear.)

I closed my eyes and looked up at the sky. I wanted to cry out loud. But right now I couldn't even see the sky or cry out loud. So I buried my face in the pillow and sobbed. The same pain I had felt four years ago had returned with Tiyas. Why had it returned? What did he want from me?

....

My father was a small-time businessman. Whatever he earned, we managed to get by somehow. I was born after eight years of my parent's marriage. Since it took quite a while for me to be born, my grandfather pressured my father to remarry as my mother was childless. But my grandmother loved my mother very much and tried everything, from amulets to doctors, to have a child. Finally, I was born, and everyone was very happy. A few years later, my grandfather passed away. Five years later my younger brother was born.

Then it was time for me to start school. Normally families like ours admit their children into some government-run schools but my father enrolled me in the best kindergarten in the area. From a young age, my father was determined to provide me with the best education. He would always pick me up from school, no matter how busy he was.

I excelled in my studies and got admission to one of the top high schools in the district. I boarded at the school. In the beginning, I could not eat the food provided in the boarding. So my father would bring me food once every day. I spend my whole school life wholeheartedly studying. I finished school with excellent results. My father was so happy that he told me to try to take admission in the famous colleges in our country. No matter how much money it took even if he had to sell our lands he would support me.

"To get admission into a good college, I had to leave my own division, but my father was very happy. Besides, there was a railway station just one kilometer away from our house, which was the most convenient for us to travel by train. From here, you can travel to almost all parts of the country by train. With my sky-high dreams, my father left me at the college hostel that day. I didn't realize then that my and my father's dreams were about to take a different turn."

My roommates were Diya, Shuba, Ruhi, and Nujahat. I was so busy with my studies in the school hostel that I never mingled with anyone. No one wanted to mingle with me either. From a distance, many people called me arrogant. So, I never had a best friend. But after coming here, they started mingling on their own, sitting together to eat, and telling various stories. I liked everything about them, but one thing bothered me: they didn't study well, they spent all night chatting with different boys, laughing and joking on the phone, and they skipped college in the morning because they couldn't wake up.

I avoided their bad habits and focused on my studies. On the 27th day of college admission, the college authorities announced a freshman welcome ceremony.
