Chapter 17 - Distracted

Chapter Seventeen: Distracted

Percy's POV

In conclusion, I could totally live with the little miss.

She had a sharp tongue but she could think good enough when a life depended on it. It had really been unimpressive on my part to completely trust those thugs I wore a uniform and kept besides Luther.

It's just that Luther was a 'play by the book' guy so I didn't want my wild mafia men with him or he could be tensed instead of being at ease, and that'd defeat my whole purpose of calming him before his worker's break was over.

Three ladies in suits walked out with Second and I, those butlers reassumed their commander positions really quickly. The Rolls Royce was still out and the three commanders took the BMW parked out.

"To Xexi." I told the driver and hopped in with Second.

I didn't know who to call amongst those uniformed thugs to tell that we were arriving. Anyone of them could be the spy who helped that assassin, and it worried me that the assassin might not have really escaped and one of them just hid her to wait for Luther.

It'd kill me if I had stayed home only to hear my best friend was killed by an assassin that I failed to cull. Seraphina's suggestion really meant a lot and even if it turned out to be a false alarm, at least, the doubt would be cleared.

Those uniformed thugs still needed to go.

When I reached Xexi, there was a crowd of reporters and my heart flew to my heart immediately.

I stayed in the car, watching them and having flashbacks of scenes that I thought had been buried in my head. Reporters were never a good thing.

Had something bad happened to Luther? What were they trying to cover? Or was it like that time ten years ago when they suddenly began asking me who my father actually was? That made me tsk and I forced myself out the car.

The reporters noticed me and cleared the way. I swore to my late father to stomp on any that came to me to ask questions. They all cleared and I walked into the building.

The glass door had been broken in. Cliché.

I walked into the building and saw some uniformed thugs speaking with one of the commanders. Since there was no blood anywhere, I knew they hadn't even put up a fight with the assassin.

"Mr. Lennon, I'm surprised you came back again." Their boss rushed to me when he spotted me. My eyes went towards the stairs where Luther would be.

"Did she get close to him?"

"Not at all. We handled her in at this place, and she left when she heard a police siren but they weren't coming here." He pointed at the mop and bucket I didn't notice. "We cleaned up quickly before the reporters came. Only two injured, Sir."

So they did pull some resistance? It didn't make me doubt him less. "Talk to him about everything else." I looked at Second behind me, then left for the stairs to Luther.

I knocked before I opened the door. Luther's mental health was bad and I didn't want to frighten him into thinking he was still in danger. I found him on his laptop.

The sounds coming from there didn't seem right. "Are you watching porn to calm yourself down, Mr. Luther?"

He seemed to snap off a daze and looked up. He turned the screen to me and it was a dying scene. Who moaned when they got stabbed?

"I see. You should be seeing comedies though."

"My life isn't exactly funny right now." He said.

At least, he felt easy minded enough to watch a movie. "Did you notice anything weird earlier?"

"I didn't even hear a sound till someone rushed into my office and asked if I was okay and if I saw anybody." He shrugged. "They did a good job in sparing me everything ."

I nodded at that, but tilted my head when the actions didn't make much sense. "Who was that person? The Boss? Or some lackey?"

"The boss is that big one with the dread, right? So it was a lackey. Why?" Luther searched my face. I said nothing so he returned his eyes to his laptop screen. "I am not still in trouble, am I?"

Actually, he still was, but not one that I couldn't handle. I called Second. "Yes, please ask their boss if he had told Luther about the assassin and who he sent."

I waited for a few seconds.

"He said he didn't tell him because he assumed he must've heard the commotion." Second replied.

I left the table that I had sat on. The Boss assumed that Luther knew but Luther had been watching a movie so didn't notice. That lackey hadn't been sent by his boss to inform Luther, so why did he do it?

Also, what had bothered me was the lackey barging into the office to ask Luther if he was okay, and if he had seen anybody.

That wasn't Luther's job so he shouldn't have asked... unless he had actually come to check if the assassin killed Luther but met him alive.

I was glad he didn't try doing it himself because Luther wasn't the strongest person I knew. "Describe the lackey, please. Sorry for distracting your movie."

He paused it and hummed. "He looked a bit scary but I remember you asked him to send Ed to the toilet last time so I thought he might be nice. He's like tall..."

I knew who he meant. A man in his early thirties that I caught looking at the picture of a new-born baby.

I had felt comfortable with him and asked him to help Ed because I thought he'd be a dad. Should I assume he was only checking up on Luther?

No. I should be more thorough.

"Thanks." I walked towards the door. "I will ask him if he noticed something while coming. Second will be coming to stay with you for a while, so don't worry."

He made an 'okay' sign and while he looked relaxed, I could tell he was really bothered. He was most definitely distracting his trains of thoughts with that movie.

I continued the call with Second. "Come and stay with Luther. I'd handle it from here." I cut the call.

He crossed me as I went towards the Boss who was getting a gentle interrogation from the commanders.

Of course, they suspected everybody but it seemed we had a primary suspect now.
