Chapter 38 - Chapter 38: The Light

The mercenary was caught off guard and startled by the arm that suddenly reached out from the advertisement board. Losing his balance, he fell to the ground.

Before he could react, the withered arm exhibited immense strength, dragging him towards the space between the advertisement boards!

Bang!!

Just as he was about to be pulled in, a thunderous gunshot echoed through the street!

The withered arm, which was pulling the mercenary into the advertisement board, was instantly severed at the elbow by a sniper bullet, freeing the mercenary!

"These undead are hiding inside the advertisement board?!"

Gilbert lowered his ERG sniper rifle, the shot was his. He had completed the aiming and firing in the blink of an eye!

Roar!!!

At that moment, a distinctive, sharp roar of the undead echoed from within the advertisement board, and it wasn't just one!

Rip!

With several more sounds of the advertisement fabric being torn, a number of zombies crawled out, exposing their fangs and attacking the four mercenaries from the Tiger Squad who were responsible for moving the board!

However, they were not helpless. Quickly reacting, they drew their unique weapons.

Seeing one of the zombies about to bite into a mercenary's neck, he immediately swung a steel battle axe in a backhanded motion!

Crack!!

The zombie's head was instantly split in two by the sharp blade of the axe!

The gray crystal in their skulls is the source of their activity. Once struck by the axe, they collapsed on the ground, completely incapacitated.

The other mercenaries were just as efficient, quickly dispatching the attacking zombies with their superior reaction skills and combat training.

The additional zombies were dealt with by the Falcon Squad's snipers providing cover from the back.

Soon, the street fell silent again. The eight zombies were all eliminated in less than ten seconds.

"These barbaric monsters have learned to ambush?!"

Captain Philip was also somewhat astonished. In his memory, these undead would normally charge recklessly at any prey they saw, never waiting to attack until the prey was close.

But fortunately, the rich combat experience of the team meant these zombies posed no real threat.

"Have your men pull back."

At this moment, Summer Cold spoke for the first time.

"Why? We're going to attack anyway. These zombies are so fragile they break on contact, and even the outer armor of my subordinates can't be pierced by them."

Captain Philip said proudly, as the equipment on each member of his team was worth enough to support an entire refugee camp.

However, this thought was quickly dispelled as he stared wide-eyed at the scene before him!

From the darkness within the street, where sunlight rarely reached, came a series of rustling noises, which quickly escalated into deafening roars!

A large number of fast-moving, oddly shaped humanoid figures began to emerge into view— it was the zombie horde Summer Cold had seen before!!

Thousands of undead surged like a rotting tsunami towards them, the overwhelming force causing an unprecedented shock to everyone's hearts!

Their numbers were so great that even if both teams exhausted their ammunition and supplies, they could barely eliminate a third of them!

Everyone could even feel the ground slightly shaking!

This scene also surprised Summer Cold. He had expected to encounter the horde only in the center of the commercial street, but it had appeared so soon at the street entrance, as if warning them not to proceed any further...

"Why are you guys still standing there! Get back here now!!"

Seeing his subordinates seemingly stunned by the sight before them and forgetting to retreat, Captain Philip yelled angrily, though his voice was drowned out by the roar of the horde.

By the time they snapped out of it and tried to escape, it was already too late.

The first few mutated zombies at the front of the horde opened their gaping mouths, extending barbed tongues that lashed out and ensnared the bodies of the mercenaries!

In an instant, the four mercenaries were torn to shreds and dragged into the horde...

As the zombies were about to enter the sunlight, they paused at the edge of the street, roaring at the group. Even from a distance, a nauseating stench wafted towards them...

"So, compared to those wild mobs, how does this group of undead measure up in terms of combat capability? Can we continue to push forward?"

Summer Cold turned to the two stunned captains beside him, smiling as he asked, with a hint of amusement in his tone.

Captain Philip's face turned dark with anger. He wanted to throw this man into the sea of zombies ahead, as the feeling of being looked down upon was unbearable, especially after losing four of his men...

Gilbert also looked grim. Was this mission from Patrick already a failure?

But Summer Cold remained calm, looking ahead at the surging zombie horde.

At that moment, he noticed a detail: the reflection of sunlight on the armored vehicle's windshield was being avoided by the zombies. None of them wanted to be exposed to the beam of light.

"Do you guys have any high-intensity lights, like searchlights?"

Summer Cold asked Gilbert.

Gilbert understood immediately what he was trying to do—perhaps using strong lights to clear a path?

But could a bit of UV light really make the undead avoid it?

Still, it was worth a try. He called his assistant, "Konov, do we still have the searchlights from the night raid on the enemy camp? How much battery life is left?"

"Uh... It should still be there. I'll go check immediately." The assistant, following orders, quickly ran to the last armored vehicle to check.

"Captain, we've brought the lights. The batteries should last about an hour."

After a while, the assistant returned with several mercenaries, carrying six giant searchlights, with a diameter close to two meters, capable of illuminating up to a kilometer away!

"Alright, set up one of the searchlights and aim it at the disgusting creatures ahead to see if it has any effect."

The mercenaries skillfully assembled the large searchlight, pointing it towards the dense horde of zombies.

"Damn it! Let me do it! I want to avenge my men!!"

Captain Philip, seething with anger, stepped forward. He effortlessly lifted the heavy searchlight as if it were a woman's handbag.

As soon as the switch was turned on, a strong beam of light shot out, instantly covering a five-meter radius of the zombie horde!

Roar!!!

In less than three seconds, the zombies exposed to the intense light emitted a series of piercing shrieks, and a plume of black smoke began to rise from their decaying bodies...
