Chapter 39 - Chapter 39: Despair

The ultra-powerful searchlights indeed proved effective against these undead!

As the light illuminated the decaying, rotting corpses, black smoke quickly began to emanate from their skin, accompanied by a sizzling sound. The area under the light soon became a clear space, with the corpses desperately trying to avoid the ultraviolet rays, squeezing away from the light to prevent even the smallest exposure.

"These monsters, so impervious to pain and death, are afraid of even a searchlight's ultraviolet rays? Hahaha! This mission just became a lot easier!"

Phillip, like a giant child, enjoyed watching the living dead writhing and jumping around in agony under the intense light, all while holding and adjusting the giant searchlight.

"Enough playing around. Install these searchlights on top of every armored vehicle. Let the tanks lead the way with their lights facing backwards, ensuring every vehicle is within the light's range. We continue forward."

Gilbert, more mature and rational, gave orders to his subordinates to set everything up and then directed the entire team to move forward.

Initially, the team thought that with armored vehicles, the scattered undead posed no real threat. However, they never anticipated the sheer, absurd number of these creatures, which even formed groups!

If they tried to crush their way through with the armored vehicles, the thick mass of corpses would block their path, potentially trapping them in an endless sea of undead.

The roar of the vehicles and tanks returned, but it was still not enough to drown out the howling storm of the undead ahead.

With the searchlights clearing the way, a five-meter-wide "path of light" appeared before them!

The fierce undead avoided the searchlights, crowding together to escape the light. Even those caught under the light were crushed into a mess by the leading tanks.

The scene resembled a small flame suddenly igniting in a dense ant colony. Instead of providing light, it brought a disaster of death.

"Ugh, it's fortunate you noticed this detail; otherwise, we wouldn't even make it to the street entrance. Now I understand why Patrick sent us two teams. This mission is indeed beyond imagination..."

Inside the vehicle, Gilbert sighed in relief, while Phillip remained smug, turning his head away, unwilling to praise Xia Leng. He acted as though he would have noticed this detail eventually, just that the other had gotten ahead of him.

Xia Leng, however, remained vigilant, feeling that things would not be so straightforward. He wondered if the undead king had evolved to resist ultraviolet damage.

The five armored vehicles and one tank had all entered the streets of the undead.

The surrounding tide of undead roared, their cries far surpassing the noise of the vehicles. Even inside the fortified vehicles, the roar filled everyone's ears.

If one looked outside at this moment, the entire district appeared as a deep red sea, the red pupils of the undead creating a dark red light that enveloped every corner.

Even if a few undead managed to break through the deadly light and enter the narrow shadows not illuminated by the searchlights, they could not penetrate the thick armor of the vehicles. At most, they left faint bite marks before being crushed into pieces by the vehicles following behind.

Just as everyone thought they would reach the center of the commercial street.

One of the drivers in the rear armored vehicle suddenly observed a strange situation.

He saw that some of the undead were actually turning on each other, their savage brutality causing a shiver.

For example, several undead would suddenly gang up on one of their own, violently tearing it apart into pieces.

"What are they doing? Have they become frenzied because they can't attack us?"

Bang!

Suddenly, a dull thud echoed through the armored vehicle, startling everyone inside. They feared something was wrong with the vehicle.

Fortunately, the vehicle continued moving at the same speed, likely having crushed another undead head.

Bang! Bang!

Repeated thudding sounds followed, causing concern among the occupants.

The driver quickly contacted the preceding armored vehicle, asking its crew to look back and assess the situation.

When the crew in the preceding vehicle turned to look, their eyes widened in horror!

They saw that the undead had begun hurling the remains of their own kind at the searchlights on the rear of the vehicle.

The searchlights were protected by a metal grille to prevent damage from such impacts. The bulbs, with hundreds of them, were designed to keep functioning even if some were damaged.

But no one expected the undead to kill their own kind and use the bodies to obscure the searchlights. The thick, dark green blood of the shattered organs splattered on the glass surface of the lights, blocking the light.

The relentless pounding continued until the powerful light from the vehicle was completely obscured and ceased to harm the undead effectively.

Finally, the undead, having been restrained, surged toward the rear armored vehicle as if they had found a waterhole in the desert!

Boom!!!

In the blink of an eye, the heavy armored vehicle was rammed by hundreds of undead, tipping over and crashing to the ground!

The wheels spun uselessly in the air as the pounding outside continued, the eight mercenaries inside experiencing a pounding in their hearts as if echoing the outside chaos.

"Don't... don't be afraid. These undead, only using flesh and blood to attack, can't breach the vehicle's defenses. We'll wait for our comrades to rescue us..."

The driver, trying to comfort the others, was suddenly struck by a horrifying scene that left him unable to finish his sentence.

Some of the undead were wielding makeshift weapons like road signs or metal pipes, smashing them against the bulletproof windshield. Their relentless strength and brutality began to crack the bulletproof glass.

With the crew inside nearing collapse from the terrifying environment, they grabbed heavy machine guns and other weapons, firing wildly at the windows.

"Ahhhhhh!!!!"

Bang bang bang!!!

The shouting and gunfire mixed with the roars of the undead outside, followed by the sound of shattering bulletproof glass.

The first wave of undead at the vehicle's front was taken down by the torrential bullets from inside. But soon, the next wave of undead began to crawl in...

In the end, when several undead, bearing their companions' bodies, squeezed into the vehicle, the screams and gunfire abruptly stopped, leaving only the wheels still making feeble sounds in the air.
