Chereads / Accidentally Yours, Mr. Stranger / Chapter 8 - Optimistic projects

Chapter 8 - Optimistic projects

"Hello, Miss Lawrence. How are you feeling?" Officer Jenkins enquired gently. Sienna's accident came as a shock to him even though he had expected it. The Lawrence family was being targeted and since she was the last one remaining, she was bound to be attacked some time soon.

"I'm fine. Thank you, Officer." Sienna smiled warily. Although the man before her seemed honest, she trusted no one. She didn't know who her enemy was. Until she caught them, she wouldn't put her faith in anyone.

"Do you mind disclosing what happened?" he asked softly and Sienna studied the forty-or-so-old officer silently before revealing all that had happened.

"I see. Did you see anybody's face when the accident happened?"

"No. My car was struck all of a sudden. I couldn't see anything. Why, Officer? Is something the matter?" Sienna noticed his tense expression and pursed her lips worriedly.

"Well, the man who hit your car is no more."

"What!" Now that shocked Sienna. Was the impact of the accident so terrible that the perpetrator himself died? Astonishing!

As if reading her mind, Officer Jenkins shook his head. "No, Miss Lawrence. The man consumed poison and killed himself."

'Typical of hitmen," Sienna thought, her lips arching wryly. "Was he an illegal immigrant too?"

"Yes." Officer Jenkins looked at her apologetically. He felt sorry for her and pitied her state. She had already lost her family, leaving her all alone and now, people were out to get her.

Being rich had its perks. However, the colorful life came with a price and Sienna knew about it better than anyone else.

"So, I presume we are at a dead end once again," Sienna said wryly, and the police officer silently agreed with her.

"Have you tried to track who these immigrants work for? There must be a group or some sort of a gang, right?" Sienna tried to analyze the situation herself. If the police weren't of any use to her, she could investigate it herself.

"That's what makes it difficult, Miss Lawrence. These men are unregistered and we don't know where they came from. We are searching on the international search list. Hopefully, we may find a thing or two soon."

Although the police officer remained hopeful, he and Sienna, both knew that the wait was fruitless. There was a high chance they wouldn't find anything. The person behind the ploy was too clever and left no clues behind.

"What about the man who saved me?" Her savior's brown eyes flashed before her once again and Sienna sat up straight, ignoring the discomfort in her body. "Did you find out who he is?"

"Yes, Miss. The man has some work to attend to. But he'll visit us to give his statement by the end of today."

"Oh, how are you so sure about it?" Sienna quirked her brows questioningly. Officer Jenkins oddly trusted the man and this surprised her. 'What's the twist here?' she wondered.

"Uh.. I know that young man. He can be trusted," Officer Jenkins vouched and Sienna looked at him skeptically for a few seconds before averting her eyes.

"If you say so." She shrugged, not hiding her distrust in him.

Officer Jenkins didn't mind her cynicism in him. Anyone who was in her state would be suspicious. It was a given.

"Miss, may I know what happened to the people following you? The ones intercepted by your guards?"

Sienna had forgotten about them. Understanding dawned upon her and she realized the scheme immediately The two cars were meant to distract them and hold back the guards. It was the car that hit her vehicle meant to kill her and she would've died as well if not for her savior.

Gratitude filled her heart. Even if she didn't know the man's motive in saving her, she was still thankful. If not for his intervention, she would possibly be dead by now.

"You may ask about them with Frank. He'll give you the details," Sienna replied absent-mindedly. Her thoughts didn't move away from the stranger who had saved her, especially his chestnut brown eyes. It was as if they were imprinted in her mind and for the first time in her life, she felt a man's eyes to be beautiful.

"Rest well, Miss Lawrence, and get well soon. We'll try to find the culprit as soon as possible," Officer Jenkins promised solemnly and Sienna snapped out of her thoughts.

"Thank you, Officer." She didn't say anything about the case. Even if Officer Jenkins were an honest police officer, he too would be useless if there wasn't any clue or evidence to support their case. So, she had no hopes on him.

Sienna sighed once the police officer was out of the ward. Picking up her phone, she noticed the messages and missed calls from her 'wellwishers'. But she responded to none of them. Instead, she opened the emails she had received from Simon and all the other three assistants. They had sent her all the projects yet to be approved and the ones yet to be proposed.

Sienna was more interested in the projects her sister, Leah was handling. So, she immediately went through the document and read through each proposal thoroughly. Since she needed to stabilize the situation, she had to choose a project that would appease the agitated shareholders.

Two projects caught her mind - Clean Energy and Production Studio. While clean energy wasn't profitable instantly, it was a worthy investment in the long run.

Sienna thought about it for a while before calling Esme, her sister's assistant.

"Hello, Miss Lawrence. How are you now?" Esme enquired, her voice gentle and filled with concern. "I heard about the accident. I came to visit you, but you were sleeping."

"I'm fine, Esme. Thank you," Sienna replied, softening her tone for a moment. But the dominance in her voice was impossible to ignore. "I called you to ask about the projects my sister was involved in."

"Yes, Miss Lawrence. Please ask away."

"Can you send me more details about the production house Leah had her eyes on?"

"Yes, Miss Lawerence. I'll forward the file to you immediately. Second Miss was very optimistic about this production house. The previous owner was a renowned director and he started the production house. But after he passed away, there's no one to take it over."

"Doesn't he have a family?"

"No, Miss Lawrence. He is unmarried and has no relatives," Esme answered.

"I see. Send me the details I'll look into it."

"Yes, Miss Lawerence."

"Also, arrange a meeting with the team involved in the clean energy proposal on Thursday."

"Miss Lawrence, do you mean..."

"Yes. This project is propitious. I want to know everything about it."

"Yes, Miss Lawrence. Anything else I can help with?"

"Yes. While you're at it keep an eye on the company." Sienna's eyes narrowed and a merciless glint flashed in her dark brown orbs. "There will be a few people kicking up a fuss in my absence. Intimate to me the moment you notice it."

"Yes, Miss Lawrence."

Sienna ended the call and looked outside the window. She was drained, physically and mentally. But it wasn't the time for her to rest. Not yet. There was a lot to do and until she finished everything, she couldn't rest.
