Mako felt a sudden, dizzying sensation as the world around her began to warp. She blinked, trying to focus, but her surroundings seemed to stretch and twist like they were being pulled through a black hole. The vibrant colors of the city faded, replaced by a deep, swirling darkness. She reached out, trying to grab onto something—anything—but there was nothing there, just a vast emptiness.
"Hey! What the hell is happening?" she shouted, but her voice seemed to be swallowed by the void.
Joseph stepped forward, his eyes glowing with a faint silver light. "Calm down, Mako. You're in a Void Nexus," he said, his voice echoing as if coming from all directions at once.
"What's a Void Nexus? What did you do?" Mako demanded, panic edging into her tone. She tried to move, but her feet felt like they were stuck in place, as if the darkness had a grip on her.
Joseph shook his head with a wry smile. "Relax, it's just a pocket dimension I created. A place between places, where time and space are… fluid," he explained, his tone almost casual, as if trapping people in other dimensions was an everyday thing for him.
Mako glared at him, fists clenched. "You're going to let me out of here, right now!" she threatened, her body glowing with a faint purple hue as she attempted to summon her energy.
Joseph raised his hands in mock surrender, his grin growing wider. "Easy there, tiger. I'm not keeping you here forever—just long enough for me to have a little chat with our friend over there." He nodded toward Kai, who stood a few feet away, watching them with a serious expression.
Kai's eyes were locked on Joseph, sensing the gravity of the moment. "You know who I am," he stated, more a declaration than a question.
Joseph's grin faded, replaced by a look of keen interest. "Oh, I know who you are, Kai Nakamura," he replied, his tone suddenly more serious. "The man who was supposed to be dead, yet here you are, fighting in the streets like a goddamn phoenix rising from the ashes."
Kai's expression remained unreadable. "And who are you, exactly? What do you want?"
Joseph chuckled softly. "Ah, straight to the point, I like that. You can call me Joseph. I'm just a… wanderer, you could say. I have a knack for stumbling into places where I don't quite belong," he said, his eyes glinting with amusement. "And right now, I seem to have stumbled into your business."
Kai took a step forward, his aura flaring slightly, the air around him seeming to hum with energy. "You're not just a wanderer, are you? You have powers… powers I've seen before."
Joseph nodded, his smile returning. "You're sharp, I'll give you that. But let's not dance around it. I know what you're really here for. You've been looking for answers, haven't you? Answers about who you are… what you've become."
Kai's eyes narrowed. "What do you know about me?"
Joseph leaned in slightly, as if sharing a secret. "I know that you're not the same man you were before," he said quietly. "I know you've tapped into something far beyond the ordinary. You've felt it, haven't you? That surge of power, that feeling like you could tear the fabric of reality apart if you wanted to?"
Kai's gaze hardened, his posture tense. "What's your point?"
Joseph's expression turned more serious. "My point is, you're playing with forces that most people can't even comprehend. Forces that don't just bend the rules of the universe—they rewrite them."
Kai didn't respond, his face remaining stoic, but Joseph could see the flicker of acknowledgment in his eyes.
Joseph sighed. "Look, Kai, I'm not your enemy. Not yet, anyway. But if you keep going down this path without understanding what you're dealing with… you might become something worse."
Kai frowned. "What do you want from me?"
Joseph glanced back at Mako, still trapped in the void, then back at Kai. "Honestly? I want to see how far you'll go. I'm… curious. But I also want you to think. About who you are. About what you're becoming. And maybe, just maybe, about what you're going to do next."
Kai studied Joseph for a long moment, his expression unreadable. "You think you know me, but you don't," he said finally, his voice low and firm. "And if you think you can control me or manipulate me, you're wrong."
Joseph chuckled. "I don't need to control you, Kai. I just need to understand you. And maybe, along the way, help you understand yourself."
Kai's eyes flashed with anger. "I don't need your help."
Joseph shrugged. "Maybe not. But here's the thing—I'm not here for you. I'm here for her," he said, pointing to Mako. "She's got potential, and she's going to need someone who knows how to navigate this crazy new world you've both stumbled into."
Kai glanced at Mako, still struggling against the invisible restraints of the Void Nexus, and then back at Joseph. "And why should I trust you?"
Joseph's grin returned, wider than before. "Who said you should? But I'm the only one here who's willing to give you a choice. And trust me, choices are going to be a luxury soon enough."
Kai's gaze hardened, his body tensing with readiness. "Fine. Then let her go," he said, his tone challenging.
Joseph sighed, pretending to think it over. "Alright, alright. Don't get your godly powers all in a twist." He snapped his fingers, and the darkness around Mako began to dissolve like smoke in the wind.
Mako stumbled forward, catching her balance as she was suddenly back on the street, the city lights blazing around her once more. She shook her head, disoriented, but quickly refocused on Joseph. "What did you do to me, you freak?" she spat, fury flashing in her eyes.
Joseph gave her a wink. "Just a little lesson in perspective, sweetheart. No harm, no foul."
Mako clenched her fists, ready to attack, but Kai held up a hand. "Not now," he said quietly, his eyes still locked on Joseph. "We need to figure out what's going on here."
Joseph gave a dramatic bow, his grin never fading. "Glad to be of service," he said cheerfully. "Now, if you'll excuse me, I've got other mysteries to uncover… and other people to annoy."
He turned to leave, but before he could take a step, Kai called out, "We're not done yet, Joseph."
Joseph paused, glancing over his shoulder. "Oh, I don't doubt that, Kai. In fact, I'm counting on it." With that, he disappeared into the shadows, leaving Kai and Mako standing in the eerie stillness of the street.
Mako looked at Kai, her expression a mix of anger and confusion. "Who the hell was that guy?"
Kai's jaw tightened. "Someone we need to keep an eye on," he replied. "But right now, we've got bigger problems."
Mako nodded slowly, her mind racing. "Yeah… like what the hell just happened to me?"
Kai gave a faint smile. "Welcome to my world, Mako. Things are only going to get stranger from here."
