Chapter 200 - The Jester's Confession

Joseph leaned against the crumbling brick wall of an old alleyway, his arms crossed casually as he waited. The faint glow of a distant streetlamp cast long, jagged shadows across his face, but his expression was unmistakable: a broad, mischievous grin, like a child who had just pulled off the perfect prank. His foot tapped impatiently on the ground, and he began humming a tune to himself—a strangely upbeat melody that seemed completely out of place given the tension in the air.

After a few moments, Kai Nakamura appeared at the mouth of the alleyway, his footsteps echoing off the damp pavement. His eyes were locked onto Joseph, a mixture of frustration and suspicion in their dark depths. "Alright, Joseph. Enough games. Why did you want to meet here?" Kai's voice was low and edged with impatience.

Joseph immediately sprang to life, his grin widening as if he'd been waiting for this exact moment. "Ah, Kai! My favorite mystery man!" he exclaimed, throwing his arms wide in a mock display of welcome. "I'm so glad you decided to accept my humble invitation. I mean, who could resist a late-night rendezvous in a dingy alley?"

Kai's expression remained stone-like, unimpressed by Joseph's antics. "Cut the crap, Joseph. You've been following me around, getting in my way, and now you've dragged Mako into this. What's your game?"

Joseph's face lit up with exaggerated excitement. "Oh, you mean this isn't a social call? I'm heartbroken!" He clutched his chest dramatically, his grin never faltering. "I thought we were going to swap stories, maybe share some secrets… like old pals!"

Kai's eyes narrowed. "Old pals don't usually try to kill each other."

Joseph chuckled, his shoulders shaking with the effort. "Fair point, fair point! But you know, Kai, I just couldn't resist! You've got this whole brooding, mysterious hero vibe going on, and it's just too much fun to poke at."

Kai took a step closer, his expression turning darker. "This isn't about fun, Joseph. I know you're up to something. And I know you killed Seraphina."

For a moment, Joseph's grin faltered, and his eyes flashed with something like recognition. Then, he suddenly burst into laughter—a loud, raucous sound that echoed through the alley. "Oh, Kai, Kai, Kai… you really do know how to spoil the mood, don't you?" he said, wiping a tear from his eye as he continued to chuckle. "Yes, yes, you caught me! Guilty as charged! I killed Seraphina. But let's be honest, she had it coming, didn't she?"

Kai's fists clenched at his sides, his muscles tensing. "And you think it's funny?"

Joseph raised his eyebrows, his smile crooked and amused. "Well, in a cosmic sort of way, yeah! I mean, she was always going on about 'balance' and 'destiny,' and now she's… well, let's just say she's part of the universe in a more permanent way." He chuckled again, seemingly delighted by his own morbid humor.

Kai took another step closer, his voice a low growl. "You don't get to joke about this. She was—"

Joseph cut him off, waving his hand dismissively. "Oh, please spare me the righteous indignation, Kai. We both know she was a pain in the ass. Always so serious, always so… preachy." He leaned in closer, his voice dropping to a conspiratorial whisper. "And between you and me, she wasn't half as good at those spells as she liked to think she was."

Kai's jaw tightened, his anger barely contained. "You're insane."

Joseph let out a bark of laughter. "Oh, maybe I am! But you know what, Kai? At least I'm honest about it! I don't pretend to be the good guy, or the bad guy, or anything in between. I just… am." He spread his arms wide again, as if embracing some invisible audience.

Kai was unmoved. "Why did you kill her?"

Joseph's smile faded slightly, his eyes narrowing as if he were considering the question more seriously. "Why? Because she was in the way, Kai. She was always in the way. And you know what? I think she was in your way too." He leaned closer, his voice dropping to a conspiratorial whisper. "Think about it. Every time you tried to get closer to the truth, there she was, preaching her nonsense, telling you what you could and couldn't do."

Kai's expression darkened, his thoughts churning. "And you decided that made her your target?"

Joseph shrugged. "Look, Kai, I'm not a saint. I see opportunities, and I take them. She was… let's say, an inconvenience. And you should be thanking me. I saved you the trouble of having to deal with her yourself."

Kai's anger flared. "I never wanted her dead, Joseph. She was trying to help—"

Joseph cut him off again, his smile returning with a sharp edge. "Help? Kai, she was holding you back! Don't you see? You've got potential, real power, but you're letting yourself get chained down by people who don't understand what you're capable of."

Kai's eyes burned with intensity. "You think I need your kind of help? You're deluded."

Joseph's smile widened. "Oh, I don't know, Kai. I think deep down, you know I'm right. You're afraid of what you can do, and she was just one more voice telling you to be afraid."

Kai was silent, his gaze piercing into Joseph. "You're wrong," he said finally, his voice steady. "I know who I am. I know what I'm capable of. And I don't need your twisted version of clarity."

Joseph shrugged again, his grin never fading. "Maybe you don't. But remember, Kai… we're not so different, you and I. You're just one bad day away from being me."

Kai's face hardened. "I'm nothing like you, Joseph."

Joseph winked, his tone playful again. "Sure, keep telling yourself that, big guy. It makes for a great bedtime story."

Kai took a deep breath, his fists unclenching slightly. "I'm going to stop you, Joseph. Whatever you're planning, whatever you think you're doing… I'm going to end it."

Joseph laughed again, his voice full of mockery. "Oh, Kai, I'm counting on it! After all, what's life without a little drama?" He twirled on his heel and began to walk away, his laughter echoing through the alley. "Until next time, hero!"

Kai watched him go, his mind racing with a mix of anger, confusion, and something else—a feeling he couldn't quite place. He knew Joseph was dangerous, unpredictable… but there was also a nagging thought in the back of his mind: was Joseph right about him?

As Joseph disappeared into the shadows, Kai clenched his fists again, a resolve forming in his heart. He would find out what Joseph was really after… and he would put an end to whatever game he was playing, once and for all.

But a part of him couldn't shake the feeling that this was only the beginning of something much darker.
