Selina sat intently at the computer, her eyes glued to the screen. She had just uploaded the footage from the camera Raven had used and was meticulously going through the images. Each picture revealed snippets of the recent confrontation with the werewolves.
Rigel entered the room, holding up a suit and examining it in front of a mirror. "I think this will be okay for you," she said, showing her the outfit.
Selina didn't respond, her focus unwavering. Rigel continued, "You should definitely wear this one. It's perfect."
Selina's attention was fixed on the screen, where she noticed a pattern in the images. The werewolves appeared to be chasing a man who had been about to enter a train. As she zoomed in, she recognized him—the same man she had seen earlier.
"They were after you," Selina said aloud, her voice filled with alarm.
Rigel moved closer, peering at the screen. "He's attractive," she remarked, a hint of curiosity in her voice.
"For a human," Selina replied curtly, her eyes still locked on the images.
The door opened and Kahn walked in, his presence commanding attention. "Who is attractive?" he asked, glancing between Selina and Rigel.
Rigel excused herself, sensing the gravity of the conversation, and left the room.
"I was planning to have you by my side this evening," Kahn said, turning his attention to Selina.
"Take Rigel. She's dying to be at your side," Selina shot back.
Kahn raised an eyebrow. "If you ask me, you're taking this warrior business far too seriously. You can't undo the past, no matter how many you kill."
Selina's eyes remained fixed on the screen as she continued, "And besides, what's the point in being immortal if you deny yourself life's simple pleasures?"
Kahn looked at the screen, his interest piqued.
"Do you see this human?" Selina said
"What about him?" Kahn asked, stepping closer.
"I'm beginning to think the werewolves were following this man," Selina said, trying to steer the conversation back.
Before she could finish, a loud noise from outside interrupted them. "Blast!" Kahn exclaimed, looking through the window at the sound of approaching cars. He turned back to Selina. "Put on something elegant and look good. Be quick about it," he commanded, heading towards the door.
"Kahn, I'm serious," Selina said urgently. "I think they were following this man."
Kahn paused at the door, shaking his head. "Other than for food, why would werewolves stalk a human?" He pondered aloud before leaving the room.
Selina was left alone, her mind racing. The implications of the man being targeted by werewolves could mean something significant—something she needed to understand before it was too late.
Michael Caden stood in front of his locker, the nurse's uniform slipping off as he changed into his regular clothes. His movements were quick and practiced, a sign of someone used to the routine.
"Are you heading home?" a fellow nurse asked, glancing up from her own locker.
"Yes, boss gave me a couple of hours off," Michael replied, zipping up his jacket.
"By the way," the nurse continued, a hint of admiration in her voice, "he said you did a terrific job tonight with the surgery."
Michael offered a modest smile. "Yeah, thanks."
As he finished dressing and prepared to leave, the nurse called out, "Take it easy."
Michael gave a nod and walked through the hospital's dimly lit corridors. Pausing at the door, he peered inside at the patient lying in bed. The patient, who had been critically injured in the subway incident Michael had handled the night before, was receiving treatment. The sight stirred something in Michael, a mix of empathy and lingering unease.
He stood there for a few minutes, watching the slow rise and fall of the patient's chest, the steady beeping of the heart monitor. The incident at the subway had been chaotic, and the memories of the violence and the lives affected weighed heavily on him.
Finally, he sighed, turning away from the ward. With a last glance back, he left the hospital, stepping out into the cool night air.
In the grand hall of the castle, the air was thick with the scent of old wine and burning candles. The long, ornate table was filled with vampires of high status, each seated with an air of dignity and power. One of the men, his voice deep and resonant, addressed the gathering, raising a glass.
"Our noble houses may be separated by a great ocean, but we are equally committed to the survival of the bloodline," he declared, his words commanding the attention of everyone present. "And when Emelia arrives to awaken Marcus in just two days' time, we shall once again be united as a single coven."
The room erupted in applause, the sound echoing off the stone walls, but Kahn's mind was elsewhere. He sat at the high table, his thoughts distant and troubled. Rigel, seated nearby, noticed his distraction and leaned over, whispering something into his ear.
Kahn snapped out of his reverie, his eyes sharpening as he caught the gist of Rigel's message. Without a word, he stood up, nodded to the assembly, and excused himself from the meeting. His abrupt departure was noticed by a few, but the discussion continued, the importance of the upcoming awakening overshadowing his exit.
Kahn's footsteps quickened as he approached Selina's room. He pushed open the heavy door, but the room was empty. His eyes scanned the space, searching for any sign of her. The only sound was the faint hum of the computer screen still active on her desk.
Moving to the window, Kahn's sharp eyes caught the sight of Selina's car disappearing down the long, winding driveway of the castle. He frowned, frustration flickering in his eyes.
Turning back into the room, he noticed something on the computer screen. Stepping closer, he saw the image of a man, along with his name and details displayed prominently. Michael Caden. The sight of the human's profile stirred a mix of curiosity and concern within Kahn.
Why did Selina put so much interest in this man? And why would she leave so abruptly? The pieces of the puzzle didn't quite fit, but Kahn knew one thing for certain—whatever Selina was up to, it was about more than just a random human.
With a determined look, Kahn exited the room, his mind already racing through the possibilities. The upcoming awakening was critical, but if Selina was onto something that could threaten his plans, it needed to be addressed. And quickly.
