Chapter 5 - chapter 5. The chase

Selina skidded to a stop, her heart racing as Lucas released Michael, who crumpled to the ground in agonizing convulsions. Lucas's bloodied gaze locked onto hers, a wicked grin spreading across his face. Selina knew she couldn't just stand there. She sprinted forward, grabbing Michael by the arm and dragging him away from Lucas with all the strength she could muster.

As they stumbled back, Lucas licked the blood from his lips, then quickly spat it into a small glass tube. He pocketed the tube, his sinister smile widening as his wounds began to heal rapidly. The bullets lodged in his flesh fell to the ground with a metallic clink.

Selina wasted no time. She hauled Michael into his car and slammed the door shut. With a quick turn of the key, the engine roared to life, and she floored the gas pedal, speeding away from the scene.

"Who are they? And why are they after me?" Michael asked, his voice trembling as he stared at Selina, his eyes wide with fear.

"I should be asking you that," Selina snapped, her eyes darting between the road ahead and the rearview mirror. The image of Lucas, now fully healed, lingered in her mind.

Suddenly, Lucas was there—racing after them with inhuman speed. Selina's heart pounded as she pressed the accelerator even harder, but Lucas leaped onto the roof of the car with a loud thud, his claws scraping against the metal. Despite her efforts, Lucas clung to the vehicle, relentless in his pursuit.

He pulled out a hidden sword, the blade gleaming ominously in the moonlight. With a fierce swing, he drove the blade down, piercing the roof of the car. The sword missed them by inches, but Selina could feel the cold steel's intent. Another strike, and this time, the sword caught her hand. Pain shot through her, and she let out a scream as the silver blade burned her flesh.

Lucas raised the sword to strike again, but Selina, her instincts sharp despite the pain, slammed on the brakes. The sudden stop sent Lucas flying off the roof, crashing onto the asphalt in front of the car. Without hesitation, Selina threw the car into reverse, then sped forward, hitting Lucas with a sickening thud. The car jolted as it rolled over him, but Selina kept driving, leaving him behind.

In the rearview mirror, she watched as Lucas slowly got back to his feet. His smile returned, more sinister than before, as he casually dusted himself off and disappeared into the shadows.

Blood trickled down Selina's arm, her vision blurring as she gripped the steering wheel with all her remaining strength. The wound wasn't healing; the silver in Lucas's blade was taking its toll. She needed to get them both to safety, but she was fading fast.

"I think you should let me take over the wheel, or at least pull over," Michael said, his voice tinged with worry as he watched the blood seep from Selina's hand.

"Shut up," Selina snapped, her voice laced with fury and pain.

"You're losing a lot of blood," Michael insisted, his eyes widening as he saw the color draining from her face.

"I said, shut your mouth!" Selina growled, forcing herself to focus on the road. But the world around her was growing darker, her grip on the wheel weakening.

Suddenly, her vision blurred entirely, her eyelids growing heavy. "No… not now," she whispered to herself, but her body betrayed her. Her hands slipped from the wheel as she slumped over, unconscious.

"Jesus!" Michael shouted in panic as he watched Selina collapse. The car swerved wildly, veering off the road. He reached over, desperately trying to grab the wheel, but it was too late. The car crashed through the guardrail and plunged into the river below.

The icy water enveloped them instantly, the car sinking fast as darkness closed in.

As the car sank into the river, Michael's instincts kicked in. He fumbled in the murky water, searching for a way out. His fingers brushed against Selina's gun, and with a desperate move, he fired at the car's window. The glass shattered, and water rushed in, but it also provided them with an escape route.

Fighting the strong current, Michael grabbed Selina and pulled her through the broken window. They surfaced, gasping for air, as Michael struggled to keep both of them afloat. He noticed Selina was still bleeding heavily from the wound Lucas had inflicted. Without hesitation, he tore a piece of his shirt and tied it tightly around her arm to slow the bleeding.

As he managed to drag Selina to the riverbank placing her by the river side, Michael's strength began to wane. He suddenly remembered the sharp pain from earlier, the bite Lucas had given him. His hand instinctively went to the wound, and he felt the warmth of his own blood seeping through his clothes.

The world spun around him, his vision dimming as the weight of exhaustion and blood loss took its toll. Just as he tried to stand, his legs gave out, and he collapsed beside Selina, the sounds of the river echoing in his fading consciousness.

Meanwhile, in the hidden pack house warehouse, Lucas entered with a grim expression, his clothes soaked with blood. He headed straight to the scientist's room, pushing the door open with force.

"You shouldn't have gone with so few men. Now I see why Josh said it was an ambush," the scientist said, barely glancing up from his work.

"But Josh didn't bring back this," Lucas replied, pulling out the small tube containing Michael's blood from his pocket and holding it up.

The scientist's eyes widened as he caught sight of the tube. "Wow, if Michael truly is the descendant of Caden, the vampire…" The scientist's voice trailed off as he began to imagine the possibilities.

"Calm down, old friend," Lucas interrupted, his voice steady but filled with anticipation. "I've tested his blood, and in two days, under the full moon, he will come looking for us."

The scientist's excitement was palpable as he reached for the tube. "That's good. Let me have this. I'll start the tests immediately."

Lucas handed over the blood, a sly smile playing on his lips. "Make sure you're ready," he said, watching as the scientist eagerly took the sample and headed into the lab.

The door closed behind the scientist, leaving Lucas alone in the dimly lit room. He knew that everything was falling into place, just as he had planned.
