Chapter 9 - A gift

Anna's POV

It was time to leave the following day and I went into the grandfather's room to bid him goodbye.

I had gone in there intending to just spend a few minutes with him, but he seemed to have something he wanted to share with me.

"Anna, can you sit beside me for just a moment?" He asked, pointing to the chair beside the bed.

I sat down without a word, curiosity getting the best of me.

"How are things between you and Nicholas?" He asked out of nowhere and I hate that I would have to lie to him again.

"Things aren't bad right now, but could be better" I replied jokingly.

"No, I want an honest response from you.

I know my grandson is hard to tolerate. His bad temper, arrogance and poor anger management are his problems, but you can always come to me if you have any problem" he said, looking at her seriously.

"He is an amazing person and with time he will get better," I replied, smiling at him.

I effortlessly convinced him but also spoke a little ounce of truth.

Things are going well between us now, unlike how we used to yell at each other every time we saw each other.

He nodded in understanding.

"Can you bring me that file?" He asked, pointing to a document on his table.

I gave him the document. He opened it and scribbled something on it before passing it over to me.

"Here, this is for you".

"What is this?" I asked, confused.

"Those are some of the shares of the Chester group that I left aside for you".

"For me?" l asked in total confusion.

"Yes, I gave Rebecca her own too when she got married to Thomas, and this is yours for getting married to Nicholas.

Hold on to it, it will come very handy in the future" he advised.

I was still stupefied by how he could just give away the shares of his company just because I married his son and I cannot even tell him it's all a lie.

"The battle for the post of the president of the company will start soon between my grandchildren. This is to stand as a check and balance to their battle.

They already have some friction between, I would hate to see that get worse" He concluded in a reflective tone.

I smiled at him, finally understanding his reasons a bit.

He wants to limit the damage that they can cause the company if a dispute starts between them.

"This should be kept as a secret,

Okay?" he said, pointing at the document.

"Alright" I nodded before putting it inside my bag, although I do not regard it as mine even though he had signed it over to me.

Nicholas and I returned home and the next couple of days were peaceful.

We both avoided physical contact with each other and Nicholas on some occasions stayed out late.

I was about to leave work, when she received a call from an unfamiliar number.

My fingers tightened around the phone in anger when the caller introduced herself.

It's Mia, the lady that stopped Nicholas when we were at the hotel lobby on our wedding day.

She claimed to have something to show me and begged for a few minutes, I was tempted to refuse her but I changed my mind.

I arrived at the place where we were meeting and she was waiting inside for me.

It's a coffee shop, about ten minutes' drive away.

I sit down on the chair opposite her without a word.

I folded my arms across my chest and rested her back on the backrest of the seat.

She looked back at me in amusement.

Silently opening her purse, she deepened her fingers inside to take out a picture.

"Do you know what this is?" She asked, holding it up between her fingers.

"My husband is waiting for me at home. I would advise you to get to the point",I said bluntly, the tone of my voice cold and unfriendly.

She smiled mischievously before dropping it in front of her.

I glanced down at it, my expression not changing a bit even if the content angered me. It was a picture of Nicholas sleeping with his visible body parts naked.

"Your husband spent his wedding night in my arms, a lot of people would be interested in this, especially your mother-in-law", She said, her lip curving in a smirk.

My heart skipped a beat at the mention of Selina, not because of the picture but because of what we had discussed last.

"Humm, this is entirely your business.

If your body is so cheap that you want to start sharing it with every man you meet, please go ahead

I don't believe this and I will like it if you stop bothering me", I said in disdain.

I stood up without giving her any chance to reply.

I am so done with her.

"Even if I'm pregnant with his child from that night?" She remarked, scornfully.

My anger rose at what she said, but I calmed myself down before speaking again.

"Whatever bastard you are carrying will never belong to my husband." I said to her calmly.

With that, I walked out on her.

I got home later than usual and Nicholas was at home already when I arrived.

"You are late today" he commented, and I nodded before speaking up.

"We have a problem", I said in a hurry.

"What is it?"

He asked, frowning slightly.

"Your Mum gave me one month to conceive a baby" I said without hesitation while looking up anxiously at him.

"One week has already passed. I was going to ignore her words, but what if she gets mad at me?" I asked anxiously.

"Just calm down, I will handle Mother . You don't have to worry about her", He replied..

"Are you sure, what if she finds you another wife?" I asked teasingly, finally calming down.

"She can't do that, or, do you want us to work towards that? I remember hiring you as my wife. I did not know if your uterus was also available for rent.

Is it?" Nicholas asked, smiling slightly.

"My uterus?" I asked, looking down at my stomach before shaking my head in disagreement and taking a few steps away from him.

"No, no it's not for rent" I replied, grimly.

"Are you sure? Name your price I will pay no matter the amount".

"I said no!" I replied and walked towards the stairs

He doubled over in laughter.

I stopped when I heard the booming of his voice. I stood at the top of the stairs and watched him laugh away at me.

it would all end after a year even if I am starting to develop feelings for him.

It's all a lie.
