The way to Vanessa's apartment was slow. Because of the rain and it was the time for white-collar workers to go home, there was heavy traffic.
After almost half an hour, they reached the apartment and headed straight to Vanessa's floor.
Alaric knocked on her door and waited for it to open.

He knocked harder and louder this time while looking over at his boss, whose complexion was now pale and dreary.
When the result was still the same, Landon took his place and banged his knuckles against the door. Each time his hand met the wood, Alaric couldn't help but flinch. The way his boss was knocking on that door was as if he was trying to knock it over.
