A chill went down my spine at Moros's words, and my resolve wavered, if only for a second. I had known from the start that he was dangerous, but there was something in his tone now that was more menacing, more personal. He was using my connections, my loyalty, against me—and enjoying every second of it.

I took a breath, steadying myself. "So, you chose me just because I was convenient?"

"Precisely. Don't flatter yourself," Moros sneered. "You just happened to be the nearest to the sword when I needed a vessel."

"Then if I have no unique value, why not find someone else?" I countered, hoping to gauge his response.

"Because you're the prince, dear boy," he replied with a tone that bordered on mockery. "Who better to wield a cursed weapon and carry out my will? And, let's be honest, you fascinate me."
