The sunset shone on the car window, casting a golden light. "Sir, where are we going?" She couldn't help but ask curiously, seeing that they were stopping in front of a luxury menswear boutique.
"We need suits for where we're going." Lucas's deep tone didn't draw her attention, a sense of panic began to rise in her chest.
"Sir, is it only for you?" Avery selectively ignored the 'we' and asked, hoping for the answer she wanted.
"No, for the both of us." He opened the car door and got out, not waiting for his words to be processed in her mind.
Fuck, Fuck, FUCK!" These words echoed in her mind. 'what is she going to do?' was her identity about to be exposed so soon?
She took each step with dread. "Sir, I ate something wrong today, I feel queasy..." She stammered weakly, trying to come up with an excuse not to go in. They were five steps through the door.
Lucas stopped, facing her with a flat tone, "You're a vampire, and I made sure to supply high-quality, fresh blood to you every day. Walk faster; we need to hurry. I don't want to be late." Out of her sight, a smile curved on his lips, but it quickly vanished.
Her legs moved slowly, slower than a sloth Lucas glanced coldly at him for wasting his time.
They finally entered the shop, and Lucas went straight to a private room. The receptionist at the counter greeted him with a flattering smile on her face and quickly informed her boss of his presence.
Avery wasn't in the mood to gawk at the high-class surroundings or the special treatment they received. Her heart was beating fast in her chest and her palms grew sweaty.
Her body was tense, ready to seize an opportunity to escape. A middle-aged man in a suit walked into their room gracefully, with a composed air.
"Sir Lucas, I hope you are well. Your suit has been prepared." They both shook hands, and his gaze shifted to Avery, nodding politely in greeting.
"This young man, does he require a suit as well?" The man asked, sizing Avery up, curious about how the young lamb ended up beside a wolf.
"Yes, prepare a black suit from him," Lucas spoke on her behalf- she turned pale by the minute.
"Excuse me, where is your restroom?" Avery interrupted them, with a polite smile.
"Head down to the left." She quickly left after receiving directions, her back looked as if she was escaping a terrible beast.
In the quiet hallway, Avery called Emily, "Dear, what..."
"I'm in big trouble. What should I do? My disguise is about to be exposed," Avery's voice was filled with panic, gripping the whole tightly to her ears.
"Breathe...what happened?" Emily's playfulness dropped, and she became serious, sensing the panic coming from Avery.
"I'm in a suit boutique, about to be measured for a suit," Avery explained everything, calming down a little, after hearing her friend's voice.
"If they find out you have breasts, tell them you are a doppelganger or knock him out with hypnotism, commanding him not to speak of your true gender. Chose one." Avery's eyes light up when she hears Emily's ideas.
Why didn't she think about that? "I can't use hypnotism - it's against the law, you know what kind of work we do."
"Desperate times call for desperate measures... Anyway, I tried. So you're picking the first option. Bye, I'm in the middle of something. Tell me how it went later."
Emily hung up, turning to her partner, who was looking at her with grievance. "Darling, I'm sorry. I'll make it up to you," She apologized softly, kissing him gently on the neck, causing him to shiver with desire.
On Avery's end, she walked back to the room, apologizing before sitting down calmly, her previous stiffness gone, her demeanor relaxed.
Lucas raised an eyebrow, curious about what happened when she went to the restroom. "It's time to take your measurements. For the perfect suit," The man said, bringing out a measuring tape and motioning for her to spread out her arms. She was dumbfounded.
"Are we doing this here?" She looked at Lucas as she asked.
"Yes, this is a private fitting room," he answered good-naturedly with a standard smile. The man was about to touch her arm with the tape.
A throat-clearing sound made him stop and look back to Lucas. "There's no need to measure him. Just give him a suit close to his build." The man was surprised by the request, but his expression didn't change one bit.
"Okay, give me a few minutes to get some suits I have in stock." He adapted immediately, leaving the room to them.
Avery felt as if her boss was shining with Buddha's golden light. Her look made him uncomfortable.
She should be grateful to Sliver, who almost went berserk when she was almost touched by another male.
He checked the time on his wristwatch: 6:30 pm, three more hours before the banquet started.
His phone rang. Seeing the caller, he frowned impatiently, he muted the call until it ended, but the call was persistent, and came again. On the third call, he walked out of the room. Standing in a quiet hallway, he answered.
"Brother, why are you ignoring my calls? Are you going to tonight's party? My cousin is also going, but she doesn't have a date. Can you be her plus one tonight? she's shy- don't make her feel embarrassed or wronged." She couldn't let him get a word in. Knowing her behavior, he held the phone away from his ears as she continued talking.
"Are you done? The next time you try to manage my life or interfere, I will make you live in your wolf form for two years. This is your third and last warning. Any more interference, and not even the elders will save you. And remember, I'm your stepbrother and Alpha." He ended the call, not bothering to hear her response.
