Chapter 9 - Chapter 5.1: Into the Aravallis

Aravalli Mountains, Rajasthan

The sun hung low in the sky, casting a warm, golden glow over the rugged terrain of the Aravalli Mountains. The ancient range stretched out before Aryan and Priya, a series of rocky peaks and valleys that seemed to go on forever. The journey from the oasis had been long and grueling, but as they finally reached the foothills of the mountains, both felt a renewed sense of purpose.

The air here was different—cooler, fresher, and tinged with the earthy scent of pine and wildflowers. The oppressive heat of the desert was behind them now, replaced by the invigorating chill of the mountains. As they began their ascent, the path ahead was steep and uneven, winding through dense forests and rocky outcrops. The sound of birdsong filled the air, a stark contrast to the harsh silence of the desert.

"Are you sure this is the right way?" Aryan asked, glancing over at Priya as they navigated a particularly treacherous section of the trail.

Priya nodded, her eyes scanning the landscape ahead. "Yes. The temple is hidden deep within the mountains, far from any village or town. It's a place of great significance to the Naga kings—a sanctuary where they believed their spirits would rest for eternity. We're on the right path."

Aryan couldn't help but feel a sense of awe as they continued their climb. The Aravalli Mountains were ancient, older than even the Himalayas, and there was a palpable sense of history in the air. Every rock, every tree seemed to have a story to tell, and Aryan wondered how many others had walked this path before them, seeking the same answers they were now.

As they ascended higher into the mountains, the landscape became more rugged, the trees thinning out to reveal vast stretches of rocky terrain. The trail grew narrower, forcing them to move in single file, with Aryan leading the way. The altitude was beginning to take its toll, and Aryan found himself breathing harder, his muscles aching from the effort.

But they pressed on, driven by the knowledge that they were close—so close to uncovering the secrets of the Naga's Eye.

By midday, they reached a plateau that offered a breathtaking view of the surrounding mountains. The sight was both beautiful and humbling, a reminder of how small they were in the grand scheme of things. Priya took a moment to catch her breath, her eyes scanning the horizon.

"We should rest here for a bit," Priya suggested, taking a seat on a flat rock. "We're making good progress, but we need to conserve our energy. The temple is still a few hours away."

Aryan agreed, dropping his pack and sitting down beside her. The journey had been exhausting, but he knew they couldn't afford to let their guard down. The Serpent's Call would be relentless in their pursuit, and there was no telling how close they might be.

As they rested, Aryan's thoughts drifted to the temple they were seeking. According to Priya, it was the final resting place of the last Naga king, a place shrouded in mystery and legend. If there were any answers to be found about the Naga's Eye, they would be there.

"We're so close now," Aryan said, his voice tinged with a mixture of excitement and apprehension. "But I can't shake the feeling that we're walking into something much bigger than we realize."

Priya looked at him, her expression serious. "We are. The Naga's Eye is a powerful artifact, and the Serpent's Call will stop at nothing to get their hands on it. But we have something they don't—a chance to uncover the truth and use that knowledge to stop them."

Aryan nodded, feeling the weight of the responsibility they carried. "We can't let them succeed. Whatever it takes, we have to make sure the Naga's Eye is kept out of their hands."

After a brief rest, they continued their ascent, the trail growing steeper and more challenging as they climbed higher into the mountains. The temperature dropped as they gained altitude, and soon they found themselves trudging through patches of snow that clung to the rocks and shaded crevices.

Finally, as the sun began to dip toward the horizon, casting long shadows across the mountains, they reached the entrance to the temple. It was a simple stone doorway, half-hidden by vines and moss, with carvings of serpents coiled around the archway. The air was still, the only sound the soft rustling of leaves in the wind.

"This is it," Priya said, her voice barely above a whisper. "The Temple of the Last Naga King."

Aryan felt a shiver run down his spine as he stepped forward, pushing aside the vines to reveal the entrance. The stone door was heavy, but with Priya's help, they managed to push it open, revealing a dark, narrow passage that led deep into the mountain.

The air inside was cool and damp, the scent of earth and ancient stone filling their nostrils. The passage was lit only by the faint light filtering in from the entrance, casting eerie shadows on the walls. As they ventured deeper into the temple, the light faded, leaving them in near darkness.

Priya produced a small flashlight from her pack, its beam cutting through the darkness to reveal the interior of the temple. The walls were covered in intricate carvings, depicting scenes of the Naga kings and their subjects, of battles and rituals long forgotten by time.

"This place is incredible," Aryan murmured, his voice echoing off the stone walls. "It's like stepping back in time."

Priya nodded, her eyes scanning the carvings. "The Naga kings were powerful rulers, but they were also deeply spiritual. This temple was built as a place of worship and reflection, a sanctuary where they could connect with the divine."

As they moved deeper into the temple, the passage opened up into a large chamber, its ceiling supported by massive stone pillars. At the center of the chamber stood a large stone altar, covered in dust and cobwebs. Above the altar, a massive carving of a serpent coiled around a sun dominated the wall, its eyes seeming to glow in the dim light.

"This must be the main chamber," Aryan said, his voice hushed in reverence. "The place where the Naga kings performed their most sacred rituals."

Priya approached the altar, her eyes drawn to a small, intricately carved box resting atop it. The box was similar to the one they had found in the first temple, but this one was larger, its surface covered in even more elaborate designs.

"This is it," Priya said, her voice barely above a whisper. "The key to unlocking the true power of the Naga's Eye."

Aryan felt a surge of excitement as he reached out to touch the box, but before his fingers could make contact, a voice echoed through the chamber, stopping him in his tracks.

"You should not have come here."

Aryan and Priya spun around, their eyes searching the shadows for the source of the voice. A figure stepped out of the darkness, cloaked in black robes, a hood obscuring their face. But there was no mistaking the aura of power that emanated from them, or the glowing eyes that peered out from beneath the hood.

"The Naga's Call…" Aryan muttered, his heart racing.
