She began to lose recognition of faces, the names of persons who had been a part of her life in the past.
However, none of these caused any sudden concern. She took it as a temporary side effect of the serum and treatment.
The magnitude of what had transpired was not apparent, so she had never mentioned it to Dr. Garcia, afraid the older man would worry.
She continued her regular check-ups and treatment with a cheery and positive demeanor as if nothing had happened.
Until the day when she gave birth to a healthy baby girl, and Dr. Garcia proclaimed her cancer-free. She tells Dr. Garcia the truth about what is supposed to be the joyous moment of her life.
"I'm happy to inform you that you are now cancer-free, and you have just given birth to a healthy and cute girl. Congratulation!" Dr. Garcia happily informed Emily.
Emily couldn't contain her happiness; she had just given birth to a baby girl, and she was not cancer-free. So she gave Dr. Garcia a light embrace, which surprised him in return.
"So, what's your plan? I'm sure your fam..." Dr. Garcia didn't get to finish what he was about to say. Emily interrupted him.
"Dr. Garcia, I have something I need to tell you." Her face looked lost somehow.
"What is it, child, tell me? Is there something bothering you? You should be happy and celebrating your new life." Dr. Garcia was also unsure what to think. He waited for Emily to tell him what was bothering her.
Ever since Emily came to Stonasia, she has been his constant company. She would cook for him, keep him company, and talk after her treatment.
He came to care for the child as his own. Having no family to call his own, Emily gave him joy, even briefly.
Emily fidgeted, unsure how to tell Dr. Garcia. She took a long breath and heaved a heavy sigh before saying..."Dr. Garcia, I can't seem to remember any of my family or people that I know in the past. It is like I lost part of my memories. What should I do?"
"What do you mean? When did it start, and why didn't you tell me? So, what do you remember right now?" Dr. Garcia is now bewildered. He never knew that she started losing parts of her memory during her treatment. He's not sure if it's a good thing or bad.
Emily had overcome all odds. She had overcome her ailment, and the tumors had disappeared. However, the struggle had not been cheap.
Dr. Garcia saw her countenance, cold and lifeless, as he sat down with her to celebrate the news. They were aware of the seriousness of the situation at that exact instant.
The medication had changed the wiring in Emily's brain. Her memories, at least the ones related to her personal life, had been erased even if the disease had disappeared.
She could still recollect her schooling, career history, and sophisticated technical expertise.
She could still recall details and facts, but most of her emotional and private recollections had faded, and her relationship with the individuals she cared about had vanished.
Dr Garcia was taken aback. He wanted to fill Emily in on the details, telling her that she had been battling brain cancer and that her family was waiting for her, along with the fact that she had previously been madly in love with a man by the name of Jake, the father of her cute little girl.
However, something deep within him wanted to keep Emily and her daughter by his side to fill the empty void of not having a family to call his own.
Since Emily could not access any of the memories, he could make up one for her.
"My child, It's normal that you can't remember the unhappy part of your life and want to forget it. The good thing is that you still remember the most important things: your skills and education. You will not have to start from scratch. So cheer up. I can fill in the rest for you later. Let's have tea in the garden now, and I can tell you some of your story."
She just gazed at him blankly. She could no longer remember the life she had led. It was as though she had lived a completely different existence.
She still couldn't believe that a miracle could happen, and she's now cancer-free!
A loud cry from the doorway made Emily turn to the nurse, holding and pushing a bassinet with an infant crying loudly.
"I think she wanted her mommy. Congratulation!" The nurse greeted me with a sweet smile.
Emily couldn't wait to hold her baby girl, "Please, let me hold her." Tears began to cascade on her tired-looking face.
Dr. Garcia picked up the baby from the bassinet and tenderly handed it over to Emily. The nurse followed Dr. Garcia, bonding Emily and her newborn child.
The news would be joyous and heartbreaking for those waiting for her back in Las Vegas.
Especially Aiden and Jake. If they knew that there was an additional member in their family.
Unfortunately, Emily was unaware of their suffering. The feelings connected her to these people were no longer there for her. She had no memory of her past and was starting over.
Emily was instructed to proceed cautiously after leaving Dr. Garcia's office. She did not choose to return because she remembered Las Vegas; instead, it seemed the proper spot to start over was the Kingdom of Stonasia, where she wanted to be.
Emily had a fresh chapter in Stonasia. She accepted a job in her old field after finding an apartment close to the busy city center; although she couldn't recall the details of her prior work, her technical skills were still strong.
Dr. Garcia offered her a temporary position in the clinic until she figured out what she wanted to do with her and the baby's life. He would support whatever she wanted to do in the future as long as she stayed in the Kingdom of Stonasia.
Her work provided solace and stability in a life that had otherwise been emptied of any meaning...~~
