Chapter 21 - Year 1995 : Rising Up (Chapter 5)

Outside LuthorCorp

The night was pitch black, with only distant lights flickering occasionally through the darkness. Clark Kent floated silently above LuthorCorp's Smallville facility, his pulse quickening with a blend of tension and anticipation. Below, the building bustled with activity, but from this height, it appeared as if nothing unusual was happening.

"SS, What's going on?" Clark asks, his voice steady but tense.

[There's been a sudden increase in energy output from the lead-lined chamber we previously identified,] SS explains.

[It appears that Lionel Luthor is initiating some sort of experiment, likely involving kryptonite or the mysterious energy signatures we've been monitoring. The timing and the scale of the activity suggest that this could be a critical development.]

"Can you pinpoint exactly what they're doing?"

[Unfortunately, the lead shielding is still preventing a full scan, but I've detected multiple energy spikes that are consistent with power surges used in experimental machinery,] SS continues.

[This could indicate the activation of a device or the beginning of a process involving kryptonite. Whatever it is, it's big, and it's happening now.]

Clark frowned, something critical was happening inside, and he needed to find out what it was.

Using his X-ray vision, Clark scanned the facility, focusing on the areas that seemed most secure. But as he tried to peer deeper, he hit a wall—literally. The lead-lined chamber in the heart of the building blocked his sight, obscuring whatever was hidden inside. Frustration surged through him. He couldn't afford to be in the dark about this, not when LuthorCorp had proven time and again that they were up to no good.

[Clark, the lead shielding is too effective,] SS's voice broke into his thoughts, calm but insistent. [If you want to know what's happening inside that chamber, you'll need to access their security system. Hacking into their cameras should give us the visual we need.]

Clark nodded. He had been practicing his hacking skills under SS's guidance for weeks now, and it was time to put them to the test. He couldn't let LuthorCorp's secrets stay hidden, not when they could pose a direct threat to him and to Smallville.

"Let's do it," Clark whispered, descending to a safe distance from the building where he could tap into the facility's network without being detected.

With SS's precise guidance, Clark carefully hacked into LuthorCorp's security system. His fingers flew over the small device he had modified, using his enhanced abilities to process the complex data in real-time. Each moment stretched on as he bypassed firewalls and cracked security codes. He was fully aware that any mistake could set off alarms and expose him, but he put that thought aside, directing all his attention to the task.

Finally, after what felt like hours but was only minutes, Clark's efforts paid off. The system's defenses fell, and he was in. He quickly accessed the facility's internal camera feeds, his heart pounding as the images began to flicker onto his screen.

The cameras displayed various rooms with their usual equipment and personnel, but Clark's gaze quickly locked onto the live feed from inside the lead-lined chamber. His eyes widened as the image became clear.

There, lying on a cold metal table, was something Clark recognized all too well—a Kryptonian space pod. It looked almost identical to the one that had brought him to Earth all those years ago. But what was it doing here, in the hands of LuthorCorp?

Before Clark could fully process the implications, his attention was drawn to the activity surrounding the pod. Scientists and technicians moved around it with urgent purpose, their focus on a series of machines projecting beams of kryptonite energy directly at the pod. But something remarkable was happening—the pod was resisting. Energy readings spiked on nearby monitors as the pod's internal systems pushed back against the kryptonite, creating a feedback loop of energy that Clark could almost feel through the screen.

[That's no ordinary space pod,] SS observed, its voice carrying a note of alarm. [It's drawing energy from its own core to resist the kryptonite. This experiment could have catastrophic consequences if they continue.]

Clark's mind raced. The pod was Kryptonian, like him, and whatever was inside it was clearly being affected by the kryptonite. He couldn't let this continue—he had to act, and he had to act now.

His mind raced as he quickly formulated a plan. He had already hacked into the facility's security system, so now he needed to use that access to his advantage.

"SS, we need to shut everything down," Clark whispered, his voice edged with tension. "All the electricity, all the security measures—everything. We need to create enough chaos to give me a window to get in and out with that pod."

[Understood.] SS replied, its tone steady.

[I'll guide you through disabling the facility's power grid and security systems. Once the lights go out, you'll have approximately five minutes before their backup generators kick in. That should be enough time to retrieve the pod.]

Clark nodded, steeling himself for what was about to happen. His fingers moved swiftly over the device he had used to hack the system, this time inputting the commands that SS provided to disable LuthorCorp's power. The system resisted briefly, but Clark pushed harder, overriding the safeguards and plunging the facility into darkness.

Inside the building, alarms began to blare as the lights flickered and died. Scientists and security personnel scrambled in confusion, their calm precision shattered by the sudden blackout. Clark could see their panic through the security cameras, but he didn't have time to dwell on it. The moment the facility went dark, he shot forward, using his super speed to reach the lead-lined chamber in seconds.

Clark burst through the outer doors of the chamber, moving so quickly that the few guards stationed nearby barely registered his presence before they were knocked aside. He could feel the familiar tingling of kryptonite as he neared the pod, but he pushed through the discomfort, his focus entirely on his mission.

Inside the chamber, the scene was one of chaos. The scientists, now deprived of their instruments and data, were frantically trying to restore power. Clark ignored them, his eyes locked on the pod that lay on the metal table. It was the source of the strange energy readings SS had detected, and it was resisting the kryptonite beams that had been directed at it.

Clark moved with precision, disabling the last of the security measures that could have impeded his escape. He reached out and grasped the pod, feeling its cool metal surface hum beneath his fingers. The "S" insignia on its surface glowed faintly, almost as if it recognized him.

The pod was heavy, but Clark's superhuman strength made it easy to lift. He turned and sprinted back through the chamber, moving faster than the eye could follow. In seconds, he was out of the facility and back into the night, the pod securely in his arms.

Inside the Bunker

The reinforced doors of the bunker sealed shut behind Clark with a soft thud, enclosing him in the familiar safety of his hidden sanctuary. The air inside the radiation-free chamber was cool and still, a sharp contrast to the turmoil he had just escaped at LuthorCorp. But now, with the Kryptonian pod safely in his hands, Clark could finally breathe and turn his attention to what was truly important—the mystery of what, or who, was inside.

The pod sat securely on a table in the center of the chamber, its surface reflecting a faint glow in the dim light. The "S" insignia on its exterior emitted a soft light, gently illuminating the room. Clark approached it slowly, a blend of anticipation and curiosity stirring within him. There was an odd familiarity in the pod, like reuniting with an old friend after a long time apart.

With a deep breath, Clark reached out and placed his hand on the glowing insignia. The metal was cool to the touch, but as his fingers brushed against it, the pod seemed to come alive. The insignia pulsed gently, as if recognizing him, and a soft, melodic hum filled the chamber.

Then, with a quiet hiss, the pod began to open.

Clark stepped back, his eyes wide with wonder as the top of the pod slowly lifted, revealing the interior. Inside, nestled in a cushioned compartment, was a small, white dog.

The sight of the dog caught Clark completely by surprise, and a wave of warmth and joy washed over him. The dog, though clearly weakened by its exposure to kryptonite, lifted its head and looked up at Clark with bright, intelligent eyes. Despite its weakened state, the dog's tail wagged weakly as it recognized Clark.

"Krypto," Clark whispered, the name coming to him instinctively, as if it had been buried deep within his memories all along.

The dog's ears perked up at the sound of its name, and with a soft, almost joyful yelp, it struggled to its feet and padded over to Clark. The connection was instant, and as Krypto nuzzled against Clark's leg, Clark couldn't help but kneel down and gently scoop the dog into his arms.

"You've been through a lot, haven't you, boy?" Clark murmured, stroking Krypto's soft fur. The dog responded by licking Clark's face, its tail wagging more energetically now. Despite the circumstances that had brought them together, Clark felt an overwhelming sense of joy and comfort in Krypto's presence.

As they bonded, the soft hum of the pod shifted, and suddenly, a holographic image flickered to life above the pod. Clark looked up, his breath catching in his throat as the image solidified into the form of a man—a man Clark recognized instantly.

"Jor-El," Clark whispered, his voice filled with awe.

The holographic image of Jor-El, Clark's birth father, gazed at him with a warm, proud expression. Though just a recording, his voice was filled with love and hope.

"My son," Jor-El's voice began, "if you are seeing this message, then you have found Krypto, the loyal companion who was once meant to accompany you to Earth. This pod was a prototype, designed to test the technology that would one day bring you safely to your new home. Krypto was the first to make the journey."

Clark's eyes welled with emotion as he listened, holding Krypto a little closer. The dog, sensing Clark's feelings, snuggled against him, offering silent comfort.

"Krypto was more than just a test subject," Jor-El continued. "He was a part of our family, loved by your mother, Lara, and by you, even as a small child. You named him yourself, Kal-El. He has always been your protector and your friend."

The recording paused, and Jor-El's image seemed to soften, his eyes shining with unspoken emotion. "I entrusted Krypto to the stars, hoping that one day, you would be reunited. It seems that day has come. Take care of him, Kal-El. He will stand by your side, as he always has."

The hologram faded, leaving Clark alone with Krypto in the quiet of the bunker. For a moment, Clark was overwhelmed by the flood of memories and emotions, but as he looked down at Krypto, who gazed back at him with unwavering loyalty, all he felt was pure, unadulterated joy.

"You're really here, boy," Clark said, a broad smile spreading across his face. "We're together again."

Krypto barked softly in response, his tail wagging with renewed vigor. It was as if the two had never been apart. Clark laughed, the sound filling the chamber with a warmth that had been missing for far too long.
