I turned.
Tristan stood a few feet away from me, the lines and angles of his face sharp under the faint sunlight. "You killed a Vampire."
"I didn't," I said.
He frowned slightly. "Was it the guard?"
"He was killed by Vampires," I said.
"Then what happened?"
"I don't know," I said. "She tried to bite me, and I thought of you staking her. Then it just happened—she started convulsing as if someone had staked her."
"Are you sure you did nothing?" he asked.
"I swear I was just lying on the ground, defenseless."
He looked around. "Could be a hunter," he said. "Are you okay?"
I nodded. "What about you?"
He said nothing as the sound of battle at the camp grew fainter.
"How is it going at the camp?"
"We killed the Vampires," he said. "But…"
"But what?"
"One of the witches was here," he said.
"Was it Amara?"
