Chereads / The Master Jack System / Chapter 2 - Practice makes...?

Chapter 2 - Practice makes...?

As I run to the forest I hear the screams of tow young children running after me.

"The tree, the tree" they both cry out.

It's always my first stop, and it's one they can help me in as well. See, there's an old willow tree in the forest, it's very easy to climb, and the young ones love to climb in it for my practice. I use the tree for swordsmanship practices, the best days are like today, when the wind is whipping the willow branches around in an unpredictable manner. My goal is to hit the branches with my sword (a thick heavy stick) before I get hit, my cousins moving branches to try and hit me with them, adding to the random.

We do this for about an hour, until my arms are tired, then I switch to bard practice. I don't own any instruments and I can't carry a tune to save my life, so instead I tell the children stories. Sometimes they are stories I make up, others they are ones we've heard from traveling merchants and bards, and some are just the stories that Uncle John and Aunt Jill have told us growing up.

Afterwards I go searching for plants used in healing, to try and increase my chances of apothecary skills. While doing this I give little prayers to various gods to try and increase the chances of getting the options of cleric, paladin, and warlock. After getting no response I then practice releasing all my rage and fight against the trees as if I were a fury fighter. After that I calm myself and practice moving like I saw a monk moving one time when we were in town for a festival. Anything to not be a farmer.

After all that, we start heading back to the house.

"Aunt June, uncle John? We're home!" i call out as we get to the back of the house, "Is dinner ready?"

"NO! Go back to the woods and play a little bit longer!" John called out, a hint of desperation in his voice.

"Now why would you tell them that? Come on out kiddies, let me see what we are working with!" an unfamiliar voice called out.

As we round the corner, all three of us gasp in horror, Aunt June is being held up by her hair, and Uncle John is on his knees and is kicked in the gut right as we start rushing towards them. There are five roughly dressed men on either side of a man on a horse. the man that kicked John falls back in line with the others as the man on the horse calls out, "Now how about the three of you come on out here, or your mother here will get a nice red necklace" as he puts a large dagger right up to her throat.

At this point Lucy and Jed have started to cry, as we step forward towards the bandits. as we do, the leader gestures to his men, "Grab the little ones, they have time to learn our skills-" he's interrupted by June as she starts to scream.

"NOOOO-"she gurgles as her struggle forces the blade to slit her throat.

"Dammit, now why'd you go and do that?!" the leader says as he drops June to the ground.

"JUUUUNE?!!" John roars as he gets up and charges at the leader trying to pull him down from the horse, getting himself stabbed multiple times before the leader kicks him away.

"GRAB THE TWO LITTLE ONES AND LETS GO!" the leader shouts

I try to grab the children and run but two of the bandits run up and start trying to dragging them away, but I refuse to let go, unfortunately I miss the third bandit that's come up behind me and hits me with the pommel of his dagger on the back of my head, dazing me. as i fall to the ground I see the third bandit kick Uncle John in the face.

As I lose consciousness I hear a loud DING!
