Chapter 11 - Moving Out

The emergency alarm blared through SMART headquarters, its urgent tone cutting through the usual hum of activity. Students and staff alike rushed towards the main auditorium, a sense of nervous anticipation hanging in the air. Akira found himself swept along with the crowd, exchanging worried glances with Hikari and Kaito as they made their way to their seats.

Dr. Yumiko stood at the podium, her usually calm demeanor replaced by a tense, focused expression. The large screen behind her flickered to life, displaying a satellite image of the East China Sea. At the center of the image, a massive structure shimmered into existence - a towering gate that seemed to defy the laws of physics.

"At 0300 hours this morning," Dr. Yumiko began, her voice carrying clearly through the packed auditorium, "our sensors detected a massive surge of divine energy in Japanese territorial waters. What you see before you is unlike any divine gate we've encountered before."

The image zoomed in, revealing intricate patterns etched into the gate's surface. Symbols of life and death intertwined in a complex dance, it's dark silhouette an ominous presence against the turbulent sky.

"Based on the iconography and energy signatures," Dr. Yumiko continued, "we believe this to be the gate of Izanami, the goddess of creation and death."

A murmur rippled through the audience. Akira felt a chill run down his spine, his Izanagi aspect resonating with the mention of its divine counterpart.

"The appearance of this gate represents both an unprecedented opportunity and a grave threat," Dr. Yumiko said, her gaze sweeping across the room. "No new divine doors have appeared in the past few months, and as you all know, most countries have only a handful of confirmed divine champions. The power that lies beyond Izanami's gate could shift the global balance dramatically."

The screen changed to show a map of the region, with pulsing dots representing various naval and air forces converging on the gate's location.

"We are not the only ones aware of this development," Dr. Yumiko's voice took on a grim tone. "Multiple nations are already attempting to claim ownership of the gate or negotiate access to the trial within. The situation is volatile and could escalate rapidly."

Akira leaned towards Hikari, whispering, "This is bigger than anything we've faced before." Hikari nodded, her eyes fixed on the screen.

Dr. Yumiko continued, addressing the tension in the room. "I know many of you are wondering about the implications of this discovery. We still don't know what happens if a champion clears two different trials from different gods. This situation is unprecedented in our understanding of divine aspects."

The screen changed again, showing footage of past divine trial sites. Akira recognized the aftermath of his own trial, the devastation left in the wake of his battle with Ryota.

"What we do know," Dr. Yumiko said, her voice solemn, "is that the power within these gates is immense and often unpredictable. In the wrong hands, it could be catastrophic."

She paused, letting the weight of her words sink in. "That is why we must act swiftly and decisively. SMART has been tasked with securing the gate and ensuring that only authorized personnel can access the trial within."

Captain Takeshi stepped forward, his presence commanding attention. "We'll be dividing into teams," he announced. "Each team will have a specific objective, from perimeter security to direct engagement with the gate itself. Remember your training, work together, and be prepared for anything."

As Takeshi began listing team assignments, the main screen suddenly flickered, showing a live news broadcast. A harried-looking reporter stood on the deck of a ship, the massive form of Izanami's gate visible in the background.

"We're receiving reports of multiple naval vessels entering Japanese waters," the reporter said, her voice barely audible over the wind. "The situation here is tense, with-"

Her words were cut off by a deafening roar. The camera panned wildly, catching glimpses of a massive waterspout forming near the gate. At its center, a figure wreathed in blue light hovered, arms outstretched as if conducting a symphony of destruction.

"It appears to be some kind of supernatural attack," the reporter shouted, her eyes wide with fear. "I've never seen anything like-"

The broadcast cut to static, leaving the auditorium in stunned silence.

Dr. Yumiko's voice cut through the tension. "As you can see, the situation is escalating rapidly. We must move now if we hope to-"

She was interrupted by a series of urgent beeps from her communication device. After a brief, hushed conversation, Dr. Yumiko's face paled visibly.

"We've just received word that a coalition of foreign powers is demanding immediate access to the gate," she announced, her voice tight. "They're claiming that Izanami's trial falls under international jurisdiction and are threatening military action if their demands are not met."

The auditorium erupted into chaos, students and staff alike voicing their concerns and questions. Captain Takeshi's voice boomed over the din, restoring order.

"Silence!" he commanded. "This changes nothing about our mission."

Dr. Yumiko nodded, regaining her composure. "Captain Takeshi is right. We are our nation's first and best line of defense against whatever lies beyond that gate. The power of gods is not something that can be claimed through political maneuvering or military might. It must be earned through trial, as all of you know from your own experiences."

She took a deep breath, her gaze sweeping across the room once more. "I won't lie to you. What we're about to undertake is dangerous, perhaps more so than any mission SMART has ever attempted. But the alternative – allowing this power to fall into unprepared or unworthy hands – is unthinkable."

Akira felt a surge of determination, mixed with a healthy dose of fear. He glanced at Hikari and saw the same resolve mirrored in her eyes. Whatever came next, they would face it together.

Captain Takeshi stepped forward, his voice carrying the weight of command. "Alpha Team, you'll be our vanguard. Your objective is to secure a perimeter around the gate and neutralize any hostile forces, divine or otherwise. Beta Team, you'll provide support and coordinate with our naval assets. Gamma Team, you'll focus on analysis of the gate itself. We need to know everything we can about what we're dealing with."

As Takeshi continued assigning roles, Akira found himself placed on Alpha Team alongside Hikari and, to his surprise, Ren. The aspect of Raijin stood stoically, his electric blue eyes focused intently on the captain.

"Delta Team," Takeshi said, his gaze landing on a group that included Kaito, "you'll be our eyes and ears. Use your aspects to gather intelligence and keep us informed of any changes in the situation."

With teams assigned, Dr. Yumiko took the podium one last time. "Remember, all of you, what you've learned here. Your aspects are powerful, but they do not define you. It's your humanity, your ability to work together and adapt, that will see us through this crisis."

She paused, a hint of emotion breaking through her professional demeanor. "I have watched each of you grow and develop your abilities. I have seen you overcome challenges that would break lesser individuals. I have faith that you will rise to this occasion and make SMART – make Japan – proud."

As the briefing concluded, the auditorium buzzed with a mix of nervous energy and determination. Students rushed to gather their gear and make final preparations. Akira found himself standing with Hikari and Ren, the weight of their mission settling over them.

"So," Ren said, a hint of his usual cockiness in his voice, "ready to make history?"

Hikari managed a small smile. "Let's just focus on staying alive, shall we?"

Akira nodded, his mind already racing with potential strategies. "We stick together, watch each other's backs. Whatever's waiting for us out there, we face it as a team."

As they made their way to the deployment area, Izanami's gate loomed in his mind, a challenge and a promise of power beyond imagination.

The hangar was a flurry of activity as teams boarded their assigned aircraft. Sleek, state-of-the-art VTOL craft hummed with barely contained energy, their hulls gleaming under the harsh lights. Akira climbed aboard, strapping himself into a seat between Hikari and a grim-faced SMART operative he didn't recognize.

As the engines roared to life, Captain Takeshi's voice crackled over the intercom. "All teams, prepare for takeoff. Remember your objectives and stay alert. We don't know what we'll be flying into, so expect the unexpected."

The VTOL lifted off smoothly, its advanced technology compensating for the turbulence caused by the gathering storm outside. Through the viewport, Akira could see other aircraft taking to the sky, forming a formidable aerial convoy.

As they soared over Tokyo, the city lights twinkling below, Akira felt a mix of emotions washing over him. Pride in being chosen for this crucial mission, fear of the unknown dangers that lay ahead, and a strange, almost electric anticipation that he suspected came from his Izanagi aspect.

Hikari must have sensed his unease. She placed a hand on his arm, her touch warm and reassuring even through the layers of their tactical gear. "We've got this," she said softly. "Whatever happens, we face it together."

Akira nodded, drawing strength from her confidence. He glanced across the aisle at Ren, who sat with his eyes closed, a faint crackle of electricity dancing across his skin as he focused his powers.

As the coast of Japan came into view, the first signs of the supernatural phenomenon became apparent. The sky ahead was a roiling mass of unnatural colors, purple and green lightning arcing between storm clouds that seemed to move with malevolent purpose.

The pilot's voice came over the intercom, tense but professional. "We're approaching the outer perimeter of the anomaly. Brace for turbulence and possible electromagnetic interference."

No sooner had the words left his mouth than the aircraft shuddered violently. Warning lights flashed across the control panel as the VTOL fought against winds that seemed to defy the laws of physics.

Through the chaos, Akira caught his first glimpse of Izanami's gate. It rose from the churning sea like a monument to some elder god, its massive torii structure dwarfing the naval vessels gathered around it. The gate pulsed with an otherworldly energy, sending ripples of power across the water and sky.

"My god," Hikari breathed, her eyes wide. "It's beautiful."

Akira couldn't help but agree, even as a sense of dread settled in his stomach. The gate was indeed beautiful, but in the way that a rose is beautiful – delicate, alluring, and potentially deadly.

Suddenly, a voice crackled over the emergency channel. "This is Commander Sato of the JMSDF Kirishima. We have multiple bogeys incoming, not matching any known aircraft signatures. They're moving too fast for- wait, what is that? Oh, sh-"

The transmission cut off abruptly, replaced by static. Akira leaned forward, straining to see what had caused the disruption. His eyes widened as he spotted movement among the clouds.

Winged figures, their bodies radiating with divine energy, streaked across the sky. They moved with impossible speed and grace, leaving trails of elemental power in their wake. As Akira watched, one of the figures raised a hand, and a bolt of pure energy lanced towards a nearby SMART aircraft.

The pilot's voice, now edged with panic, filled the cabin. "Hang on, we're taking evasive action!"

The VTOL banked hard, narrowly avoiding the energy blast. But the winged attackers were relentless, diving and weaving through the SMART formation with deadly precision.

Captain Takeshi's voice cut through the chaos. "All teams, prepare for emergency deployment! Gravity Aspect users, ready for drop assist!"

Akira shared a look with Hikari and Ren. This was it – the moment they had trained for, the reason SMART existed. As they unstrapped from their seats and moved towards the aircraft's deployment hatch, Akira felt a surge of power from his Izanagi aspect. Whatever lay ahead, he would face it with everything he had.

The hatch opened, revealing the maelstrom below. The sea churned with unnatural fury, and the air crackled with competing divine energies. In the distance, Izanami's gate loomed, a silent witness to the battle unfolding around it.
