Chapter 4 - Sun and Shadow

Akira's journey home through the chaotic streets of Tokyo was unlike anything he had ever experienced. The familiar urban landscape had taken on an otherworldly quality, with shadows that seemed to move of their own accord and whispers that danced just at the edge of hearing. As he walked, he became increasingly aware of translucent figures flitting between buildings and through crowds of panicked citizens.

"Spirits," he murmured, the word feeling strange on his tongue. He had always believed in the existence of the spiritual world, but to see it so vividly was both awe-inspiring and terrifying.

Most of the spirits seemed harmless, going about their own mysterious business with little regard for the mortal world around them. But as Akira turned a corner, he saw something that made his blood run cold.

A massive, crimson spirit loomed over a group of smaller, more benign entities. Its form was constantly shifting, but Akira could make out razor-sharp claws and a maw filled with countless needle-like teeth. The malevolent spirit let out a bone-chilling roar as it swiped at the smaller spirits, which scattered in terror.

Taking a deep breath, Akira stepped forward. "Hey!" he shouted, his voice cracking slightly. "Leave them alone!"

The crimson spirit turned its attention to Akira, its eyes glowing with an infernal light. For a moment, Akira's courage faltered. What was he thinking? He had no idea how to use his new powers, and this creature looked like it could tear him apart in seconds.

But as the spirit lunged at him, something extraordinary happened. Its claws passed through Akira's body as if he were made of smoke. He felt a chill, but no pain.

Emboldened by this discovery, Akira acted on instinct. He swung his fist at the spirit's face, half-expecting his hand to pass right through it. Instead, there was a satisfying thwack as his knuckles connected with something solid.

The spirit reeled back, more surprised than hurt. Its eyes narrowed, and it let out another ear-splitting roar before charging at Akira again.

What followed was a bizarre battle, with Akira ducking and weaving around the spirit's attacks while landing his own blows. Each hit seemed to make the spirit's form less stable, its edges becoming blurry and indistinct.

As the fight wore on, Akira felt a strange energy building within him. It was like nothing he had ever experienced before—a mixture of exhilaration, power, and an odd sense of purpose.

Finally, after what felt like hours but was probably only minutes, the crimson spirit collapsed. Its form had shrunk considerably, and its color had faded to a dull pink. Akira stood over it, panting heavily, his body aching but his spirit soaring.

A new notification appeared in his vision:

As the adrenaline of the fight began to wear off, Akira became aware of the chaos around him. The ground was shaking, and in the distance, he could hear the rumble of collapsing buildings and the wail of sirens.

In a nearby cafe, a television blared with breaking news. Akira paused in his journey home, drawn in by the reports of global chaos.

"Unprecedented supernatural events have been reported worldwide," the newscaster announced, her usual composure cracking slightly. "From New York to New Delhi, pillars of light and mysterious doors have appeared, leading to what some are calling 'divine trials.' We go now to our correspondent in Cairo..."

The screen split to show a man standing in front of the Great Pyramid of Giza. Behind him, a massive door covered in hieroglyphics hovered in midair.

"Thank you, Yuki," the correspondent said. "The situation here is tense. Thousands have gathered, hoping for a chance to enter what many believe to be the trial of Anubis, the Egyptian god of the underworld. Similar scenes are playing out at landmark locations around the world. In Greece, a door has appeared atop Mount Olympus. In Norway, a portal has opened in the heart of a fjord. The global community is scrambling to understand and respond to these events."

Akira's phone buzzed with a barrage of social media notifications. Shaky videos showed people emerging from trials with newfound powers, while others depicted the destruction caused by natural disasters and those abusing their divine gifts.

As he scrolled through the updates, a particular post caught Akira's eye. It showed a figure wreathed in dark energy, laying waste to a city block not far from where he stood. The caption read: "Another 'god' on a rampage. Where are the heroes we need?"

Akira's heart sank. He had been so focused on his own situation that he hadn't considered the wider implications of these divine trials. How many others had gained powers? And how many of them would use those powers for destruction rather than protection?

A familiar voice cut through his thoughts. "Akira? Is that you?"

He looked up to see Hikari Asano approaching, her school uniform torn and dirty but her eyes shining with an inner light. Akira had always admired Hikari from afar, impressed by her skill in kendo and her unwavering optimism. Now, seeing her in the midst of this chaos, he felt a connection he couldn't quite explain.

"Hikari," he said, relief evident in his voice. "You're okay. I saw the trial of Amaterasu... did you...?"

She nodded, a mix of pride and uncertainty crossing her face. "I passed. It was... incredible. And terrifying." She gestured at the destruction around them. "What about you? Did you face a trial too?"

Before Akira could answer, another familiar voice called out. "Akira! Hikari!"

They turned to see Kenji running towards them, his face a mixture of relief and confusion. "I've been looking everywhere for you guys! What the hell is going on?"

Akira and Hikari exchanged glances, unsure of how much to reveal.

"Kenji," Akira started, "it's complicated. There was this door, and a trial..."

Kenji's eyes widened. "Wait, you guys went through those weird doors? The ones all over the news?" He looked at them with a mix of awe and fear. "Are you... different now?"

Hikari nodded slowly. "We are. Kenji, things are changing. The world isn't what we thought it was."

Kenji took a step back, his expression conflicted. "I... I don't know what to say. Are you still you?"

Akira reached out to his friend, but Kenji flinched away. "We're still us, Kenji. Just... more, I guess."

A tense silence fell between them, broken only by the distant sounds of chaos. Finally, Kenji spoke, his voice trembling. "I think... I think I need some time to process this. My parents want us to leave the city. Stay safe, okay?"

As Kenji turned to leave, Akira called out. "Kenji, wait!" But his friend just shook his head and jogged away, leaving Akira with a mixture of guilt and sadness.

Hikari placed a comforting hand on Akira's shoulder. "Give him time. This is a lot for anyone to take in."

Akira nodded, swallowing hard. "Yeah, I guess you're right."

As if to punctuate the moment, a massive explosion rocked the area. They turned to see a pillar of dark energy rising from a few blocks away, accompanied by maniacal laughter.

Hikari's face hardened with determination. "We have to do something," she said, her hand instinctively reaching for the bokken strapped to her back—a remnant of her kendo training that now seemed woefully inadequate in the face of divine powers.

Akira nodded, feeling a surge of protective instinct. "Together," he said, meeting Hikari's gaze. She smiled back, a moment of understanding passing between them.

As they prepared to move towards the source of the disturbance, Akira's phone buzzed. He pulled it out to see a message from his father:

```
[Dad]: Son, I hope you're safe. The government people came by again. They say there's a new program for people like you. An academy. Maybe it's time to come in? I miss you. Love, Dad.
```

Akira's heart clenched. He missed his father terribly, but the fear of putting him in danger had kept Akira away. The memory of their last conversation, hurried and filled with fear as Akira prepared to go into hiding, still haunted him.

"Hikari," he said, showing her the message. "What do you think about this academy?"

Hikari frowned, reading the message. "I've heard rumors about something like that. A place to train people with divine powers. But can we trust them?"

Akira hesitated. "If we go there, we'd be giving up our freedom. We'd be under government control."

"Maybe," Hikari said softly, "but we'd also have resources, training. A chance to understand these powers and learn how to use them responsibly."

Another explosion rocked the city, closer this time. The decision suddenly felt much more urgent.

"Okay," Akira said, making up his mind. "Let's do it. But first, we deal with whatever's causing that." He gestured towards the pillar of dark energy.
