The hats made of rubber float on the surface of the sea, unlike leather hats. The crew could easily retrieve the rubber hats, they saved money by doing that.
The crew lost almost ten leather hats in the ocean...

Reading the script, Johnny Depp found Jack Sparrow as a quirky but calculative type. He was stupid but he was also a great pirate... He actually didn't like the role that much. After all, he knew that pirate-themed movies have a curse and they never make money at the box office.

A cowardly prince who seduced the Queen of Sparta and fled back to Troy. Basically starting a war.
Instead of keeping his honor as a warrior, the prince kneeled in front of his older to save him from death. Further worsening the war.
Being a new actor, Orlando felt like this role could destroy his image as a handsome but valiant actor.
His roles in Lord Of The Rings and Pirates Of The Caribbean were better.
Orlando practiced archery for his role as Legolas in Lord Of The Rings.
In Pirates Of The Caribbean, Orlando attended sword-fighting lessons every week just to understand how swordsmen act. Of course, Johnny Depp also did the same thing.
'That's probably one of the reasons why I got the offer because I already know how to use swords.'
