Chapter 4 - A Cleaner In The Apocalypse

Saturday 16.08.2024 11:05 am

"Time to start farming points..." I thought as I looked at the system notification. I still had one more zombie to kill before I could close the door connecting the shop to the corridor. Unfortunately, I can't buy anything useful with the AP I have.

I'll try to kill as many zombies as possible, and then I'll buy a silenced pistol. Hopefully, the silencer from the system store will completely suppress the sound of the gunshot. I might not be an expert on firearms, but I know that normally, even though a silencer greatly reduces the noise, it doesn't eliminate it completely, and I've noticed that zombies have a much, really much sharper sense of hearing than their counterparts in movies.

Carefully, I dragged the zombie's body to the side, just in case it would get in my way during the next encounter. After making sure I had everything ready, I slowly opened the door again and began tapping my foot on the ground.

Moments later, the zombie heard the noise and started moving toward me.

"grrrrr" "grrrrarrr"

"grrrrr" "grrrrarrr"

Repeating the last sequence, I quietly closed the door and threw the broom to distract the corpse. Just like before, the zombie turned its back to me.

"One precise and strong hit, and..."

"swooosh"

"cruck"

"tks" – apparently, it heard my swing and turned around. The baseball bat landed on its shoulder with the sound of a breaking bone.

"Let's finish this quickly," I muttered, taking another swing to hit its head but staying alert for any irregularities.

After three more hits, a fourth body with a shattered skull was lying on the ground.

"Hmm, it's getting easier to kill them," I thought, satisfied with the quick kill, as I peeked into the corridor to check if any zombies had approached. Fortunately for me, it was still empty. I began searching the corpses' pockets for items that could distract other zombies. One of them had a wallet, a phone, and keys in his pocket. Opening the wallet, I smiled for a moment, seeing 700 PLN, but I quickly reminded myself that during the apocalypse, money had no value beyond starting a fire.

I detached the car key from the other keys. Pocketing it, I went to check the rest of the bodies. Of course, each corpse had a phone. Not finding anything interesting, I prepared for what was to come.

Cautiously, I stepped out of the bathroom, once again scanning the corridor. Seeing that nothing was approaching, I prioritized heading toward the restaurant doors.

"Damn, I expected this," I muttered. The restaurant was in total disarray, with food, tables, and chairs scattered on the floor. A few bodies with chewed-off parts lay motionless on the ground, but the worst part was that there were at least 100 zombies crowded together inside.

"Let's seal this Pandora's box," I murmured quietly enough that no zombies could hear. After closing the door, I wedged a broomstick to ensure it couldn't be opened from the inside. I exhaled, feeling more relaxed, but I had forgotten one crucial thing: the corridor could be accessed not only through the restaurant but also through the shop.

"grrrrr" "grrrrarrr"

Hearing growling behind me, I quickly turned around to see two corpses entering the corridor and starting to approach me. I had two options now. I could either fight them and quickly run to close the shop doors, or try to sneak back into the bathroom and wait for the zombies to disperse. The second option was safer but had a major drawback.

If I made too much noise, I would attract the rest of the zombies from the shop into the corridor, which would further slow down my progress.

Making a quick decision, I reached into my pocket, pulled out the car key, and threw it to distract the two zombies. Without waiting for their reaction, I quietly approached one of them.

"swoosh"

"cruck"

"grrarr"

"One shot, one kill," I smiled, remembering how my biology teacher had talked about the human skull. If you don't know where the thinnest bone is, let me tell you. There are two such places. The first is the squamous part of the temporal bone, which is the anterior-superior part of the temporal bone. The second is the lower part of the occiput. This time, I hit the latter.

After killing the zombie, I quickly retreated, watching the other corpse, which began running toward me.

"Uff, huff" – even though I wasn't doing anything particularly physically demanding, the constant fighting under stress was starting to wear me out. As the zombie got closer, I quickly dodged, trying to hit its temple.

"swoosh"

"Damn, almost," I cursed. Unfortunately, I missed the temple and hit the forehead instead. The zombie staggered back and then fell on its back. Knowing that it was much safer to finish it off while it was on the ground...

"swoosh"

[You have gained 1 Apocalypse Point]

"cruck"

"Huff, I need to rest a bit," I said, approaching the shop door. Luckily, these doors were different from those in the restaurant. While the restaurant doors were double doors that opened simply by pulling, these had a handle.

"Zombies probably can't open doors, right?" I muttered, slowly closing the door. After the fight, all the adrenaline had worn off, so I felt much more tired.

Dragging the bodies, I finally focused calmly on the corridor. Since it was partially a gas station, the corridor had vending machines with snacks and drinks, as well as canisters of washer fluid.

"Wait... a gas station!!!!"

"Hahahaha" – I laughed loudly, not even paying attention to the growling zombies and their bodies banging against the doors.

"Let's hope this works," I thought, looking at one of the corpses and imagining storing it in my inventory.

"Hahaha, it worked. This makes things much easier," I felt relieved as I watched the body disappear into the inventory. Somehow, I instinctively knew that the storage space was infinite and that time stopped in there. Thanks to this, I wouldn't have to worry about spending AP on food or drink. But that's not the best part. Currently, I'm at a gas station, and what does that mean?

It means I probably have a few, if not several hundred thousand liters of gasoline and diesel. Thanks to this, I don't have to worry about fuel for driving a car. Additionally, with gasoline, which is the most flammable fuel, I can create Molotov cocktails. (Of course, hydrogen, acetylene, or propane are more flammable. For example, hydrogen has the lowest ignition temperature at -253°C. Acetylene is a bit less flammable but mainly used in welding and metal cutting. Propane is a regular gas used in lighters, for instance. Just a little trivia for you, if you want me to keep doing this or not, let me know in the comments.)

"But that's not all" – where I am, there are at least a few thousand zombies. If I can gather them into the blast radius, I could earn a lot of points.

"Ehh, let's eat for now; I'll think about it after I find mom and sister" – I need to speed up to find them.
